Fedora Networking :: Unknown Samba Password - Use Samba For File Sharing Like On A Windows Home Network

Jul 17, 2010

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.

My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Server :: Samba Shares - No Password Request For Access

Feb 23, 2010

I recently switched from centos to fedora as my server choice. Probably not the best decision but I like trying new things. Now before I switched I had my samba server setup just they way I wanted it. Now I'm having a hard time getting it back to that way. Here is my smb.conf

Code:
[global]
workgroup = workgroup
netbios name = netbios name
server string = Linux Server
security = user
wins support = yes
encrypt passwords = Yes
domain logons = yes
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = yes
writable = yes
valid users = %S

[me]
path = /home/me
read only = no
public = yes
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
browseable = yes
writable = yes

Now I did throw away my old smb.conf because it wasn't that complicated and I figured I could reproduce it.. aside from that everything is working except for the fact that I can access any share I want to listed without it requesting a password. I have a username and password setup with smbpasswd and I think everything else is setup correctly involving samba shares but I have no idea why it won't request a password.

General :: Connect And Access Files Remotely To Samba Server Over Internet

I have a server at home running as a file server and DHCP connected to a switch with a wireless AP in there as-well. with this setup I can access the files and do some configurations via SSH on the actual server anytime I'm able to get the wireless signal, now lately I felt the need to be able to do the same but this time over the internet. I've read somewhere already that I'm gonna need a router with port forwarding and NAT, then know the IP address of the server but my problem is once you start talking about routers then you need broadband connection which is something I don't have. Getting a router is not much of a problem but without ADSL like connection I guess its useless, what do I need to do?

It could be that I was not sufficiently clear in my first post here, so I'll explain it very, very slowly and carefully, so as not to cause any you any further confusion.

The original poster is unable to access his Samba shares. The original poster does not understand why and seems to think that it is configured correctly. Other posters have added suggestions about smbpasswd and testparm to check for correct syntax. Presumably, these things have not yet solved the problem, since the OP has not returned to say the problem is solved, though you linking to one of the first links that would appear in a google search for redhat and samba was no doubt wildly and extraordinarily helpful.

So, I had an idea. I recognized that, in a crazy plan to make a functional OS, the authors of Linux had allowed more than one binary to execute simultaneously. This means, that SELinux and samba can both run at the same time. Now, stay with me here - if SELinux is not configured to allow permissions for the samba user on the Samba share.... "permission denied" log errors can occur in Samba. Now, that sounds familiar for some reason. Hmmm... oh, yeah! That was what the original poster mentioned! And, I just dealt with that exact problem, caused by insufficient SELinux permissions!I knew there was a method to my madness.So, anyway, adopting your own ironically sanctimonious tone, I hope you've learned a lesson today that can improve the quality of your posting. This lesson is two-fold: (1) it's not especially good form to quibble with someone trying to help in good faith and (2) if you are going to, it pays to have something tangible to offer to go along with your condescension.No need to thank me - helping you be a better poster is its own reward, and I'm rapidly losing interest in anything you have to say in general, anyway. From what I've seen, it's not anything I couldn't find in under 10 seconds on google.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Internet Access And Local Files/server

Jan 16, 2011

i would like to setup one of my old pcs as a file server and internet gateway; we are living in a large building shared with 40 others. the ubuntu box would be the one connected to the internet via ethernet and sharing connexion via wifi. i haven't started yet - presently, i am doing the ground work and reading before to start i understand sharing the internet is relatively simple and can be done from the GUI

What we would like is slightly like BT Fon or BT Open Zone in the UK: you can hook on a free network but in order to access outside (internet: email, web, ftp, etc) you need to login login would help us monitor fair usage. I imagine something with username and password for each user would do: as we are a few in the same building not everyone is actually paying for the connection and we don't want to end up with rather large excess bills. So the ones who are paying access both files and internet; those who dont just have access to the files on the local server.

Do i need Ubuntu server to set this up? What hardware would be ideal - given we are all far from rich but willing to have a nice setup

It would be great if you could share some knowledge around the topic and eventually provide some tutorial; also any heads-up on the hardware side would be great! (signal booster, etc - there's 3 floors and 3 buildings)
