Ubuntu Servers :: The Users And Group Section Of EBox Doesn't Appear - Samba

Sep 20, 2010

In my ongoing hunt for a Samba GUI that is feature packed, well supported, easy to use, yet doesn't suck, I found myself tinkering with eBox. I have it installed and fired up but I'm a little confused. I can add a Samba share - okay great. But I sorta need to add users. Where on earth can I add users? The users and group section of eBox doesn't appear to be related to what I need, and I also cannot get into the access control section of the very share I just created.

CentOS 5 :: Installing The 5 On Ebox 3300?

Jul 29, 2010

I want to install CentOS on my ebox 3300. Ebox has this hardware:

* 1Ghz x86 CPU
* 256 MB RAM (512 MB available on Q2/2009)
* Support for 2nd NIC
* Integrated Full Clock FPU

[code]....

The specs below is for my Jr DX which includes the wireless option and 2x RS232 ports, plus I have a 1 GB Compact Flash and a USB-Serial usb unit (PL2303) plugged in.

cat /proc/cpuinfo:
processor : 0
vendor_id : Vortex86 SoC
cpu family : 5

[code]....

I want to install it from my 4 GB usb stick onto my 4 GB CF card. I dunno how to get CentOS correctly onto my usb stick. I have tried unetbootin method and method from centos wiki, but it does same thing - after loading vmlinuz and initrd.gz it reboots. But when I tried to boot from that same usb stick on my laptop, it worked. Has anyone some experiences with installing centos on ebox? Or does anyone know what to do with it? Gentoo for example boots correctly, but gentoo can't install of CF cards (live instalation CD hasn't it in kernel enabled) and doesn't know my ethernet card (same).

Ubuntu Servers :: Sudo Contrab Script To Ping Ebox

May 3, 2010

I have a DHCP server that I only mildly trust, but its nice because it is an eBox server (I use it for DNS, DHCP, and smtp relay for my internals). I want it to issue all addresses (simply because I like the way it displays its leases in the WebUI's dashboard), but I want a fail-safe too. I have another server that is strictly an Ubuntu Hardy server (I use it for openVPN and nothing else) so I would like it as my backup dhcp server. I figure I'll install all the dhcp stuff on it and just stop the service (to include a sudo crontab @reboot script to stop it when rebooted).

And simple use a sudo crontab script to ping the eBox every 5 minutes to make sure its live, and if not then start the dhcp server. My questions: If I put the entry in my sudo crontab will the script execute even if no session is currently running (its obviously a server so won't have anyone logged in except for administration)? Also since it is in the root crontab it will be able to start the init.d service without having to sudo it right (IE the script only needs to say "/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start" not "sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start")?

Ubuntu Servers :: Removing Ebox From Loading On A Headless Server?

Jul 18, 2010

I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server to 10.04 LTS - rebooted and things ran good. I knew I had a few problems, but DHCP and DNS were booting up and working fine for me.I went to take a look at Webmin, but apparently that's been removed from support for Ubuntu 10.04 - so I thought, I'll use eBox. I realized that Ebox didn't have the network module turned on, so I tried to turn it on. I found out the installation was missing scriptaculous, so I got that and installed that and then turned on the network module.I then rebooted the machine - and now nothing. It hangs when I get to the load for Apache. I would like to disable the network module for eBox, but can't find documentation for how to do that from the command line - which I have to use because the damn box won't boot and I'm running from a Live CD.

Networking :: Configure A (openSUSE) Client To Dhcp To EBox DHCP Server - Lease An IP Address

Mar 25, 2010

I am puzzled with trying to configure a linux (openSUSE) client to dhcp to eBox DHCP server. I am using dhclient to lease an IP address with dhclient eth0 -s 10.45.48.108 and get a response

openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67 interval 4
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 10.45.48.108
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: Network is unreachable
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: please consult README file regarding broadcast address.

The server reports eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.45.200.2 to 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0

I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?

Server :: Unable To Enable Write Access To Samba Share

Aug 14, 2010

Hi,

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with my Samba share. I have set up a directory /samba to serve up some movies, music, etc, on an Ubuntu 10.04 Server box. For now, I have given that directory 777 permissions, along with the subfolders:

Code:
drwxrwxrwx 4 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 18:02 Apps
drwxrwxrwx 3 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 19:02 Music
drwxrwxrwx 3 michal michal 4096 2010-08-14 19:27 Pics
drwxrwxrwx 5 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 19:48 Video
This is how my smb.conf file looks like for this particular share:

Code:
[share1]
comment = share1
browsable = yes
path = /samba
write list = michal
Furthermore, I went ahead and mapped the Samba user to my Linux user account in /etc/samba/smbusers:

Code:
michal = "michal"
When I try to login from a Windows machine using michal as the username, I can see the folders, but I am unable to create new files on the share. Considering that the file system permissions are liberal on the share directory, I have no clue as to why I'm still getting denied write permission.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Client - Failed To Retrieve Share List From Server

Apr 15, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu sense about 6.10 and never had to network with a Windows computer before. I have a decent understanding of Linux itself but I am having issues with this samba client. I have a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and am trying to use samba to access my shares on a Windows XP(SP3) computer. I am on the network just fine, and all the computers on the network have static IP addresses. When I go to Places->Network->Windows Network I see the "TITANNET" workgroup, (Even before I changed my workgroup to "TITANNET" in the smb.conf file.), but when I try to access it I get this error:

Code:
Unable to mount location
Failed to retrieve share list from server.

P.S.[0] I tried using /etc/init.d/samba restart but it did not work, I am not sure I am even running the samba server. (Well, it is obvious I am not, what I really mean is what am I running to (not =D)access the shares on my Windows PC.)
P.S.[1] I know that this has probably been posted before. I have searched and searched, I am about 1.5 pots of coffee and 4 hours into this.

Fedora Networking :: Unknown Samba Password - Use Samba For File Sharing Like On A Windows Home Network

Jul 17, 2010

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.

My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Share : Get An Error Message "unable To Mount Location, Failed To Mount Windows Share"?

Firewall off (utf disabled)

Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)

External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)

I have two shares

1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.

2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

Ubuntu Servers :: Create Samba File Share To Windows Domain Clients?

Apr 28, 2010

I feel ashamed for even asking this, since it seems like there's about 3 samba questions here every day. However after an hour of searching, I keep finding strange variants that aren't what I need.

My Goal: Create a single file share on an Ubuntu Server - share it via samba to Windows clients that are on a domain with active directory. It sure would be nice if AD authentication would work - so users don't have to type in a linux user/passsword each time they want to access the share.

In my adventures, I've found the following items (which may overlap)

1. Joining the server to a Windows Domain

2. Turning the server into a Windows Domain Controller

3. Authentication with LDAP (still not quite sure how/what this would do)

4. Stuff with Kerberos

5. Lots of people bickering about Samba 3/4 & how it's impossible to make Samba a PDC.

I'm not sure if I need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller or not...all I want to do is create a file share and share it on the domain...I don't need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller for that, right? Maybe just a member? Maybe nothing at all?

I guess if I want to authenticate stuff correctly (or forward authentication requests? Not sure), I probably need to join the ubuntu server to the domain...I think.

But let's say I do join it to the domain...then how to I create a file share that is authenticated via active directory rather than a local ubuntu server account? I see a dozen guides on joining the server to the domain, but nobody ever mentions sharing the folder over the domain.

The lines are also blurred between joining Ubuntu to the domain and making it a domain controller. What should I keep an eye out to avoid in these tutorials?

I get lost between the Kerberos/LDAP/Samba/WinBind etc...and I have a feeling I don't need all of these for something this simple.
