Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine. When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. CentOS 5 Server :: Openvpn Connect To Samba Share From Windows XP Client?

Sep 15, 2009

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between our CentOS 5.3 server at work and my bosses XP computer at home. At this point, we are kinda locked into Quickbooks. I'm testing the connection from my XP boot at home to see if it works. I can log into our servicemanuals easily enough from XP at home however, the windows takes forever to update. I have the Samba server only listening on port 445 because is seems to work more efficiently at work. I connect to the Samba shares via linux from home and everything works well but, when I try to do anything with the shares from Windows client at home, it's very slow!

I'm thinking that it must have something either to do with the Windows OpenVPN client or the client.conf file. Is there anything I should look at in the .conf file for answers?

Server :: Joining Windows 7 Client To Samba PDC V 3.4.3

Jun 19, 2010

I have a very nice SUSE 11.2 Samba PDC that runs well with Windows XP clients. I am using NETBIOS for name resolution since I dont want to put in a DNS server because my router already has one, Im pretty sure it would make things more complicated. I enabled wins support in smb.conf and made the name resolve order with lmhosts first. lmhosts lists all the ip adresses with their computer names in capitals. I hope thats right. I set up my windows 7 with the reg file from the samba wiki on windows 7 [URL].

That's great now I get the old screen from XP in windows 7 when joining the domain. I gave the machine netbios name MAINPC a smb trust account MAINPC and added the unix user MAINPC$ that should all work. I manage to successfully join it says welcome to domain, afterwards an error appears "changing the dns name of this computer to "" failed" and something bout not finding the domain controller. although I joined. then I resatart and when I try to log on it says "trust relationship failed". How to make it join and logon properly.

Server :: File Server For Windows - Mount More Than One Samba Shares As Network Disk

Jun 17, 2011

I want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??

Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?

Fedora Networking :: Unknown Samba Password - Use Samba For File Sharing Like On A Windows Home Network

Jul 17, 2010

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.

My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

CentOS 5 Server :: Cups & Samba -- Printing From WINXP Client As Postscript Fails?

Mar 14, 2009

Apologies if this was asked before -- I have googled the last bytes out of my Firefox but fail to find anything helpful. Here's my problem:I have a foomatic hpijs cups-driver for a HP Inkjet (Non-PS printer) installed. Printing from UNIX-hosts works. I have cups configured not to allow raw-printing (/etc/cups/mime.types: #application/octet-stream, /etc/cups/mime.convs: #application/octet-stream).I have now installed samba-printing, the cups PS-drivers plus the Windows PS-drivers are populated to /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/ and get pushed to the WIN-Client.Problem is that when I print from a WINXP client, the printer outputs heaps of Postscript-text instead of my page.I have tried to debug this a bit but fail to find anything really useful. My observations so far:

- The samba-pushed HP_Photosmart_3300.ppd (in both /etc/samba/drivers/... and in the resulting dir on the WINXP client) reads:
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 foomatic-rip"

Server :: Easy File Sharing On Windows... Without SMB?

Jun 16, 2010

Question for the sys admin types:So, say you want to do file sharing in an environment with a lot of Windows clients, but you want the shared data on a Linux server. You can use SAMBA, and that will make all the Windows clients happy (provided, of course, that you can get SAMBA working correctly). But is this your only option?I mean, obviously you can use ssh/sftp. But the Windows sftp clients I have tried don't make the file sharing process as simple for non-techies: you either just get a command-line, or you get some kind of two-pane application view like with filezilla or cuteFTP; it isn't as integrated into the desktop as what you get when using native SMB file sharing. So, is there Windows software you can install that can make the file sharing experience very non-expert friendly with some protocol like ssh/sftp or NFS?

Server :: Unable To Access Samba Share On CentOS 5.4 From Windows XP Or Vista

Jan 23, 2010

I can't be the first one with this problem. What am I missing?

I have setup Samba servers in the past, just none under SELinux. The last one I configured was a couple years ago, so I wouldn't doubt I'm a bit rusty.

---- Environment summary:
Clean server install of CentOS 5.4 includes SELinux
- lets call this 'server'
- updated samba to 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1

Client1 - Windows XP sp4 - WINS configuration uses 'server' noted above
Client2 - Windows Vista - WINS configuration uses 'server' noted above

---- What works / what doesn't ------
Clients can see the server (XP and vista) in network neighborhood.
The following does not work from windows (xp or vista)
net view
net view \server
net view \server-ip
net view \servershare

This does work on the server
smbclient -L \server
smbclient -L \server --user validuser
smbclient -L \client1 --user validuser

---- What I have configured and tried (config/output below) --------
firewall ports for samba are open
SELinux enforcing or permissive
file context is set on share
samba booleans are set

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up A Windows File Server W/ Samba On Fedora 11?

Right now I have 2 36.4GB drives in RAID 1+0 and 4 146.8GB drives in a RAID 5 config. I wanna use the smaller drive for the OS and the bigger drive for the storage. I've managed to load the OS fine, the problem is I can't figure out how to mount the 4 146.8GB drives as a single logical volume and set Samba to use it. Right now all the RAIDs are setup using the built-in Compaq Smart Array utility (or whatever it's called) that's built into the SCSI hardware or BIOS.
