View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy daughter from New Zealand gave me her Acer Aspire 4315 Laptop/Notebook Linux System in December 2009 so that I could use it in bed on days that I was unable to get out to use my main computer as I am a very ill man. I was able to log into the unit as she just said to me to use her name and password to. I have been able to use the unit on the internet at home and my other daughters home through a home wireless system. I clicked on the Upgrade Icon which it did, I think it went from a 7. something to 8.something All the way through the set up it asked me questions and I just clicked yes thinking that was what I had to do. My problem now is, that when I turn the unit on it asks me for a username and password. I put the details my daughter gave me but it tells me invalid user and password. All I do know is that a friend of my daughter installed the Ubuntu Program onto the Laptop/Notebook. Can anyone tell me how or what I have to do now to be able to use the unit again as I am getting very frustrated with the whole thing. I am not used to using Ubuntu and am totally lost with it as I have always been a Microsoft user.

What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication
Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").
So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.
I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.
I have two types of OS in my network windows (XP,7) and linux (debian 5.03, ubuntu 9.10 8.04, fedora 8) all of linux can see an reach the windows shared folders but windows can not reach linux shared folders what can I do fo fixing this problem what should I follow. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and trying to install a printer over the network which is plugged into a Windows 7 machine. I can see the workgroup fine and the computer fine on the network, but when I try to double-click on the computer (both via the nautilus and the printer setup route), it asks me for a username, workgroup and password.
I tried the account's username and password and username "Guest" with no password but neither worked. The weird thing is that when I booted my machine into Windows XP and tried to install the same printer, it never asked me for a username and password and installed just fine. Why is Samba/Ubuntu asking me for the Windows 7 password when Windows XP didn't need it?
I have an OpenSuSe Server configured with DNS, Samba (PDC + WINS), LDAP, Squid All this is in a hybrid scenario with other OpenSuse acting as clients and some Windows 7 also as clients. Everything works perfect. Both systems are able to join and authenticate in the Samba server very smoothly.
My problem is that in my workspace I have several different subnets/VLANS. So I have another OpenSuSe client here that needs to join the domain and authenticate with the samba server, but he just cant find it via the Windows Domain Membership setup screen (where I usually configure the others).
The server can pe pinged, and it does resolv local domain names. It seems the problem is that I have no place to configure a PDC/WINS server in Linux Client. It only asks me for the domain to join, and then it doesnt find it (Im guessing this happens because it cant receive the broadcasts from the server network).
Is there any way to declare the Samba/PDC/WINS server on the client side?
I want to know if you can make a share on Samba and if you access the file you need to put a username and password in and can you save that to the server. If you can give me a step by step guide how to do it or give me a link where I can go read up on it.

On my Windows XP machine, I can see the Ubuntu directory and can access files on it. I just can't access the Windows workgroup from Ubuntu.
I have a home network with Ubuntu (3 PC) Windows (XP 3, 7 1 vista 1) and Lacie networked drive. I have successfully edited fstab to mount the lacie drive at startup on my main ubuntu PC and it works a treat. My problem is setting up the Unbutu PCs to browse the workgroup. This was working but now (since my last update of Unbutu I think) I get prompted for a password and no matter what I do it does not let me browse.

Have followed swerdna's guide as in the past and my wife from her win7 computer can see and has read write access to all the shares & can print to the shared printer attached to the Opensuse computer etc. However, when I try to access her Win7 shares from my opensuse computer I am presented with a username / password prompt. I'm working on sharing a user's home folder using the username and password of the user's lLnux account. I noticed that home folder sharing is quite easy as I just need to change the smb.conf file to enable it. However I can't seem to login anyway. It seems that Samba keeps its own records of username and passwords. Is there a way that I can map/sync the Linux users' usernames and passwords automatically to Samba? The end result should be that whenever I add a new user or a user changes his/her Linux login password,Samba automatically changes its password as well.

I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. I have it set to run in OpenGL already, so I figured I'd try to update my graphics driver. I downloaded the driver and it's a .run file. I have it set to run as an executable. I attempted to upgrade from the software.opensuse.org website with samba-3.60-10.1.i586.rpm. I get a message: Nothing provides cifs-utils needed by samba-client-3.60-10.1.i586.rpm. So I could not upgrade. There are other upgrades on the site but they are not available for some reason. What is an appropriate upgrade? Is upgrading the solution? If not then what?
I have an ubuntu 8.04 running samba that's integrated with active directory but not using winbind. Things are working fine except there are lot of entries in the samba logs about:

I want to share files between my desktop box and my laptop either by my mains-LAN or by ethernet cable and cannot find anything on the forum to point me in the right direction. There is plenty of information to help with the installation of Apache/LAMP and the like. But is this what I need? Will I need to create logon IDs to the desktop to share files (and even the printer?).
