I just installed a CentOs 5.2 Linux server and I'm trying to configure Samba. The file names of files created from the windows workstation are ok, but the file names of files created from the Linux server appear with different names than them are supposed to have. I've checked the Samba configuration file but I can't find options for fixing this trouble. Samba version 3.033375

Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine.When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading my ubuntu server from 9.04 to 10.04, the window computers couldn't resolve samba shared names anymore, the error code displayed by Windows was 0x80070035.
I was using the ubuntu server as a samba server, using 'share' as the security authentication method, it has been working very well under previous ubuntu versions but, after upgrading to 10.04, the windows computers can't access the server shares anymore; the linux computers don't have any problems (I can access the shares from linux).
As a workaround, I've added the name of the server in c:windowssystem32driversetchosts; but I'd like to know how to fix the problem without modifying every windows computer.
I've enabled Samba share on Fedora firewall... now i can view the shares on Windows Computers on my network but Windows PC can't see my shares on Fedora...
Also my wireless Router/Modem (D-Link DSL G604T) reports the names of the Windows PC connected to it but names my Fedora Machine as unknown...
I shared home folders to be accessible from a Windows XP notebook computer which my wife uses some times. One of the folders contains many pictures which I later renamed (bulk rename at the ubuntu box). The pictures at the Windows box still have the old name and they can be opened as usual. However, when my wife rotated a picture and saved it with the same name, the picture just disappeared. For some reason It can not display the new names. I removed the Thumbs.db files, restarted samba and re-configure again the connection with samba but no luck. It is not a big problem but I was wondering if someone knows what this is happening?This is my samba config file:

We are running RedHat Enterprise Server 5. We have a Windows 7 Pro with an HP Printer attached to it, and shared. I can see the printer in RedHat, but everytime I send a print job, it just does nothing but sit there. I've even tried to attach to it via smbclient, and I get the following response: tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME

View 9 Replies View RelatedOn one of my Samba shares on my server I have a folder of mp3 files of my CDs. The one I am having an issue with is "Clarence Carter/Dr. C.C." (yes, the one with the ULTIMATE party song). The "Dr. C.C." folder name is normal locally on the server, but across Samba it comes out "DMOU3A~H". It's definitely Samba doing it, because I get the same result whether accessing the share from Linux or Windoze. I can still access the folder this way, but it would be nice to not have Samba mangle the folder name this way. I am using Samba 3.4.2 on an Athlon64 X2 system running Slackware64.

I use Fedora 11, and have an external HD (USB) which has 4 partitions of 500GB each.
/dev/sdb1 is an NTFS partition that is exported to my windows machine using samba.
However, only 75GB is visible in windows (via rt.click properties).
Anyways, below is output from fdisk -l. why does windows see only 75GB of a partition that is 500GB in linux?

Then i restart my smb service, and i found the 'shared' folder on windows, but I can't access it.
I am running OpenSuse 11. It runs Apache webserver and Samba for filesharing. I am also running webmin. Everything works 100%. I have 2 shared folders that can be accessed by everyone. My question is how can I log in to the shared folder from a windows machine when I set the permissions for only a certain user to log in. My system hostname is Linux.site and my user is henk. I want to note that I was using Arch Linux and this exact setup worked flawlessly. Why on earth would it not work the same in Ubuntu? Is it not the same Samba?
I've been trying for what seems like forever to share a single directory with only two authorized users and I just can't get the permissions right.
Running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop as home file/print server.
Two users: chris and gretchen
Directory to share: Music
Music resides in chris' home folder.
I'd like to have full access for these two users and no access for anyone else. The challenge is that the best I can get for gretchen is read-only. What i've done so far:
Created user accounts for each
Created Samba accounts with passwords for each
Created a group called "family" and added chris and gretchen to it
Assigned the family group to the Music folder.
Shared the folder giving read and write access to family group.
chris seems to work ok but when gretchen access it from her snow leopard laptop she can't create a new folder. It should be noted that chris is also the admin account.
In case that NFS client of fedora is set to cache nfs file handle, where is the cache stored such as /var/lib/nfs?If it's stored in memory instead of directory tree, what command can I know the combination of file names and file handles with?OS in my test environment: Fedora Core 6

We're in the process of implementing an offsite backup of all our servers to a remote Linux server. We're using rsync over ssh.What I've found is that characters such as ±, ¶,´ and £ are replaced on the Linux server with underscores.I don't mind if it changes these characters in the filenames of documents, but when it renames a language pack from Espa±ol.clx to Espa_ol.clx, it could cause issues for us further down the line.
What do I need to do differently to make the special characters copy over correctly? For the initial sync which will take place locally, before the machine is moved offsite, I have SAMBA enabled. I am able to copy files from Windows to the Samba share, retaining the original filename, though it looks different in the Linux directory listing, i.e. t̻st becomes ĻstThese files get deleted by rsync when it runs, as it does not match the filenames.
we have two work computers, one with windows and one with Ubuntu. We are going to change the windows computer to Ubuntu, and put them on a network. So we copied all of the documents on the windows computer to the Ubuntu computer as a first step. The problem is, with the documents and folders that we copied, if they have spanish accents we can't open them.I tried looking on the forum but I didn't find anything about exactly that problem. One post suggested that the "locale" might be the problem, but our locale seems to be the correct one for our country and language.
The accents show up as white question marks inside a black diamond. If I open a file inside a folder with an accent, or a file with an accent, it tells me that the file doesn't exist.But when I change the name of the containing folder or the file, and replace the question marks with accents, I can open the folders and files.But we have lots and lots of documents, and it would take a really long time to change the name of all of the folders and files. How can I fix all of them at the same time?
I keep trying and keep trying to set up my father's documents folder on our PC running Ubuntu 11.04 as a shared folder across the network with Windows computers, and I keep getting error messages like this one:
"'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /home/frank as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own. Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false" to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this."
