View 2 RepliesI have the Japanese language pack installed and I have ibus and anthy installed for input method management. It all works fine and dandy. Except that some kanji aren't right. Like 社会 the first of the two kanji displayed for me is the archaic version. I can't seem to figure out why this is happening. I can only assume it's picking up data from the wrong font package, but I'm not sure how to manage this. Happens in ibus for my own input and on websites like www.jisho.org where my input was unrelated.Using a fairly fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 lucid, I used scim for IM in Karmic but still stuck to the default japanese language support pack. Worked fine until lucid.

There is a problem though and that is when I use the keyboard shortcut to activate the switch between language fonts in Skype there is no effect. What do I have to do to get the fonts to work within Skype? It works just fine with firefox, gedit and other programs; just Skype. Could this perhaps be a bug within Skype that I have no control over?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo far, as a former Chrome user on Windows, I am enjoying Chromium. However, there is one glaring problem that is bugging me, and is disrupting my usage of the browser.
Chromium will not show Japanese fonts properly. It's not that everything shows up as boxes. The problem is that certain characters will show in Japanese, and certain will show in Korean, thereby making the Japanese text unreadable. Copying and pasting into gedit allows me to read the Japanese text, and Firefox never had this problem, however, within Chromium, this is unreadable.

Has anyone else had this problem, and fixed it? I have installed the language packs and have tried setting things to different unicode fonts and changing the encoding to unicode and even Japanese, and continue to get these errors.
I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?
Am using Icefaces1.7.2 in tomcat5.5.23 in Centos5( jdk 1.6.06 and jre 6u11 and no X window system in my server ).. Actually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...

I had to do a build from the source (svn build 578), then configure, make and make install. So far so good.Once I try to run fuppes, I get the error:[ERROR] Failed to bind socket to : 8.15.7.107:0.The documentation I've searched so far suggests that there is a config file that needs to be set with the appropriate ip address, but the file doesn't exist as the program hasn't started up yet!

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter doing an update a couple of days ago (had previously upgraded to 5.6), the font size in firefox (file forward reload, etc), terminal and the panel (using xfce) are significately smaller. Searching the web, mail lists and the forums have not resulted in finding anyone else with this problem. I did notice that glibc has a bug that is currently being worked on at Redhat but it is unclear if the font problem I am seeing is related. Note also, that the initial upgrade to Centos 5.6 was successful.

CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that
I installed Wine on my machine just a few minutes ago and as part of the installation the following packages are also installed: ttf-liberation,
ttf-mscorefonts-installer, ttf-symbol-replacement, ttf-tahoma-replacement. These add extra fonts to the system which I'm assuming are required by windows programs running inside Wine. The problem is though that Firefox also seems to be using these fonts because the fonts now look different inside Firefox. Not a huge difference, but you can tell they are different and they just don't look "right" to the eye. They are no longer as pleasing as they were when Firefox was using the default Ubuntu fonts.
Is there a way to keep these fonts for use by Wine, but not allow any other program on Ubuntu to use them?
I have clean installed my system to 11.04 and lost some important fonts of course. I am using specialist IPA fonts for some important documents, but the file is in exe form. However, I have that blocked executable bit problem. It's getting really annoying, as now many legitimate programs that I have can't be used on Linux anymore. All I need to do is extract the file and then let Ubuntu install the ttf (as it has done so in the past).

opensuse v11.2 The Gnome help describes how to install fonts: copy the font files to </usr/share/fonts>. I have some Type1 fonts with PFB, PFM, AFM and sometimes INF face files. The only ones I see in the <Type1> directory are AFM and PFA. Which font files does Gnome actually require? Is a PFA needed? Are the font files moved/deleted from </usr/share/fonts/> after installation? Is there a more obvious way to install fonts in Gnome?

fc-cache -fv .winfonts
And I see a message saying 453 new fonts, but I can't seem to use these fonts in any application.
I have installed SUSE 11.3 and I am using KDE4. I also installed the font "misc-console".
After installing the NVIDIA driver 256.53 the font misc-console becomes useless because it is displayed so much slanted that it is imposible to read. However, if I disable the NVIDIA driver (by replacing "nvidia" with "nv" in xorg.conf), then it works fine. It also works fine in KDE3 and the NVIDIA driver. So, it seems to be a combination between NVIDIA and KDE4. A lot other fonts are also overly slanted and unreadable (like "Sony fixed", "misc fixed", etc.).
If I launch konsole from a terminal, I receive the following warning:
konsole(6928) Konsole::TerminalDisplay::setVTFont: Using an unsupported variable-width font in the terminal. This may produce display errors.
Is there a way that I can use "misc-console" without having to uninstall the NVIDIA driver? I'm just used to this font for my terminal.
The same happens whether I install the driver manually or through YAST, 32 or 64 bit. The video card is NVIDIA 8400GS, the system Athlon 64 4400+
I recently installed KDE (I was using GNOME). After that, I found for gnome applications, KDE font settings is applied even when I log in using GNOME. Whatever I do in appearance-fonts, all gnome applications follow the settings from KDE Personal Settings. (Application Appearance -> Fonts)
I lost all the subpixel hinting, and I finally just found out that if I set it in KDE Personal Settings it actually affects gnome applications. (I'm in GNOME now)

I'm not able to do this from Nautilus View because of the error that I do not have permission to do so.
