Ubuntu :: Fonts Look Different After Installing Wine?
Mar 23, 2010I installed Wine on my machine just a few minutes ago and as part of the installation the following packages are also installed: ttf-liberation,
ttf-mscorefonts-installer, ttf-symbol-replacement, ttf-tahoma-replacement. These add extra fonts to the system which I'm assuming are required by windows programs running inside Wine. The problem is though that Firefox also seems to be using these fonts because the fonts now look different inside Firefox. Not a huge difference, but you can tell they are different and they just don't look "right" to the eye. They are no longer as pleasing as they were when Firefox was using the default Ubuntu fonts.
Is there a way to keep these fonts for use by Wine, but not allow any other program on Ubuntu to use them?

Mar 24, 2011I use Ubuntu 10.04. I'm not sure what other info is relevant, Gnome, I suppose.
Yesterday I installed wine-1.2 (using Synaptic), in order to be able to build programs for Windows. This in itself seemingly succeeded, but as a result of the installation, fonts in Firefox changed (one can say immediately - when the installation was done, the fonts had changed).
For example, in this forum, the non-monospaced font changed in some way I can't put my finger on. Right now, posts feel less readable, but getting used to it may just be a question of time.
Some other pages (in existing tabs, and when looking them up again) changed the font size, some increased the size, some decreased it. This can be fixed by using Ctrl-+ or Ctrl-- quite easily, but <whine> I would like these kind of changes not to happen at all </whine>.
I uninstalled wine (not removed completely - I don't know what the difference is), but this didn't undo the font change.
The font settings within Firefox (Preferences) don't seem to have been changed.
The point of this post is to ask what may have happened, where such dependencies between fonts are stored, and how to undo the change, in case I'd like to.
Debian Configuration :: 32 Bit Apps On Wine Cannot See System Fonts
Oct 23, 2015I've just installed Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit, installed wine, and found that a 32-bit Windows program (Agent newsreader) could not see the linux system fonts. (This worked fine on Kubuntu 14.04)
Since this is the first time that I've installed Debian, I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious or if this is an actual bug.
Steps to reproduce:
Fresh install of Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit.
apt-get install wine
wine wordpad # this is a small word-processor for wine that is supplied with wine
menu -> format -> font
all linux fonts are visible -- so far so good
Because I want to use a 32bit program, I now have to do this, I understand:
dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install wine-bin:i386
But after that,if I run "wine wordpad" and look at the fonts, all the linux system fonts are gone. The only fonts visible are the nine that are built into wine (Courier, Fixedsys, Marlett etc..) So installing the i386 wine support seems to have broken something.
Ubuntu :: Firefox Fonts Wrong After Installing Truetype Fonts / Why Is So?
Jan 15, 2010I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?

As I know, this is like asking for the impossible, I am posting here to have some opinions about the use of Wine in Debian. In particular, I would like to know whether wine makes Debian less secure and more vulnerable to viral, malware, adware, etc infections.

Jan 26, 2010I have a new ipod and It was working just fine with my old windows system until I switched to ubuntu, I tried installing iTunes with wine but it didnt work and my ipod will only sync as a camera, i cant pass misuc over to the ipod and viceversa. What do i do to sync my ipod
P.S. I tried installing mulitple multimedia programs that sayd they synched to iTunes but nothing helped.
Debian Multimedia :: Fonts In Iceweael 4.0?
May 2, 2011Just installed Iceweasel 4.0 and i must say, the fonts really looks shit See screenshot: [URL]... I thought this would be fixed with a newer version of libcairo but it seems that it is not that import to fix this shitty font. It's giving me a headache. To be honest, the fonts looks much better in Ubuntu (not that i now go back to Ubuntu for that reason). All the topics spent on the libcairo issue are mostly a waste of time imho if it is not fixed at the source. Well, i don't wanna nag about it. I only wonder, is there a good solution to fix it and help me get rid of my headache (besides taking an aspirin).

Feb 1, 2016I've just set up an alternative testing installation starting from Jessie and I've instantly noticed that the appearance of VLC can't be set via the qt4-qtconfig application (as I've done so far in Wheezy and Jessie), in short VLC doens't respond at all to any setting changed in qtconfig .
Looking at the bug reports for qt4-qtconfig and particularly this one #564548 looks like there are indeed issues with qt4, and comment 17 states thatQt4 entered in "only security bugfixes" mode, so this won't be fixed.
Debian Multimedia :: Xorg Displays No Fonts?
Mar 3, 2010I just upgraded my Debian Etch to Lenny. After doing so, Xorg displays no fonts. I get only rectangles. This occurs in the Login Screen and after logging in. The only thing that is readable are the contents of a terminal (even gnome-terminal). What can I do to solve this Problem? The Xorg.0.log doesn't give me any clue on what's the problem.

Here are two screenshot of a Wikipedia page (modified via readability). My serif font is Liberation Serif.
Here is the same font in Open Office Writer
And here it is in KWrite
To me, the last two look all right-- at least all the lower case glyphs are the same height. So why does the font look so terrible in iceweasel?

Jan 8, 2010I use XFCE on Debian (squeeze) and I'm sick and tired of the ugly fonts in all Qt-apps. See below what it looks like in qtconfig-qt4 with a deleted ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. I've done some googling, but without any satisfaction. I've tried to change font (Font family drop down menu in pic), and some fonts looks as bad as the default (Sans Serif), and some look ok. Something seems to be fscked up.

Jul 29, 2010I am using wine for a couple of programs, such as spotify and winscp. These used to work great, untill the latest wine update last week. Suddenly, the fonts are scrambled and all wine programs became unusable. I tried to reinstall my programs and to reinstall wine, but to no avail.

Aug 18, 2010I'm kinda new to configuring wine in fedora. My issue is, after I upgraded to fedora 13 and after upgrading wine, my wine configuration gui and all the gui's of all *.exe applications that I was using started having abnormally large gui's with equally large buttons and small fonts. I have attached a screenshot of the wine config GUI as it appears on my screen. My current screen resolution is 1280X1024 and I'm using an integrated ATI chip (ATI Radeon x200 express) with the mesa-dri drivers for display.

Aug 25, 2010I noticed that the fonts for Office 2007 look shabby. I am not taking about anti-aliasing or subpixel hinting; but the general appearance of the applications in not even close to what I am used to in Windows. I'll show what I mean through some screen shots below. The text for different options in the ribbon looks awful. Compare this with windows and the text is clearly legible.
Same goes for the advanced options and other interfaces in Office 2007 under Wine. [URL]... when I type in some text in word, the default font (Calibri - Size 11) at 100% zoom looks awful. Here is the comparison of Linux with Windows7: [URL]... I would like to mention here that I have excellent font rendering in other native Linux applications like Firefox and Open Office. I know that users of Ubuntu and LinuxMint do not face this issue... I have seen many video and screenshots where the installation on Linux looks as good as that on Windows. Additionally, I was going through some of the treads on this forum and I realised this was an OpenSuse centric issue. Subpixel Hinting Packages (Ubuntu Lucid Patches) are now available for 11.3.

Feb 23, 2010I've got a Wine question.. I've searched around for this.. but have only found how to make wine fonts smoother with anti-aliasing.
But my problem is that Images, when they are resized in Wine applications they won't get resized smoothly, the images gets pixly and does not look good at all.. Good example of this is Spotify.

Debian Multimedia :: Increasing GTX 470 Performance With Wine?
Nov 9, 2010Is there any way of improving performance with the GTX 470 using Wine software with Debian Squeeze?
Installed version of Wine is 1.3.6 tested with different versions of nVidia drivers including the latest one, still VERY slow performance and many quality settings are in red. Setting WoW to use OpenGL improved the performance, but deactivated many quality settings in red, unfortunately. Looks to me as it's using lower features than OpenGL 2.0?? So what's up with that? GTX 470 supports OpenGL 4.1 so I suspect it's an limitation in Wine software, can anyone confirm this?
Default kernel 2.6.32 is used in all of this. The computer is an Intel Quad at 2.4ghz + 4 GB DDR 2 or DDR 3 memory.

Sep 5, 2011i've been experimenting with trying to run games via wine (i don't have windows to do a dual boot with), and i just recently tried to open up a dvd in vlc, and... trouble. it works, but now the player "squishes" the widescreen image into a traditional "tv screen" box. even when do it in fullscreen, it just fills the screen with black and plops the "squished" image in the middle of it. i've watched downloaded mp4 images i got off videos like this, and they look fine, but they're not widescreen images. i'm sure there's something really simple somewhere i gotta fix

In fact, when i minimise a window (Nautilus, console or Chromium/Iceweasel), i see the window's black border and it's very slowly when i minimize or maximize it. In this screenshot, you can see the black border. I haven't this problem if i use the free driver for my Nvidia but i can't to play with wine I tried with the driver on experimental repositories or the driver on Nvidia Website.
Debian Multimedia :: Wine Forbids Any MS Office Software In Squeeze 32 Bit
Mar 6, 2011I am currently using Squeeze 32 bit with both gnome and KDE desktops. I have a legitimate office disk, and wanted to use MS word for work due to formatting glitches in Open Office. However squeeze says the disk is corrupt and refuses to progress. This is not so as the same disk works fine in aptosid and Kubuntu. So wine is not very useful in Squeeze whilst it behaves like this. After all it is I suspect it at least should be able to install MS word, though of course no updates are given by MS as it hates wine. Both Gnome and KDE gave the same results, as user or root. I wonder if anything else can be done to Wine to make it work. Perhaps it is something to do with the "free" kernel, I only speculate. Otherwise Squeeze is going very well.

Feb 16, 2011while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2)
