CentOS 5 :: Fonts Smaller After Latest Updates To Centos 5.6?

Apr 17, 2011

After doing an update a couple of days ago (had previously upgraded to 5.6), the font size in firefox (file forward reload, etc), terminal and the panel (using xfce) are significately smaller. Searching the web, mail lists and the forums have not resulted in finding anyone else with this problem. I did notice that glibc has a bug that is currently being worked on at Redhat but it is unclear if the font problem I am seeing is related. Note also, that the initial upgrade to Centos 5.6 was successful.

CentOS 5 :: Sendmail Stopped Working After Latest Updates

May 31, 2010

We are running CentOS 5.4 x86 on ESX 4 Server. We have a busy Help Desk, a Forum and several name-based websites running. Weve been using CentOS for this 'purpose for several years (different versions) and so far we have never had a problem. On Saturday, I applied all the latest updates including the Kernel updates. I rebooted the server and all seemed well until Sunday morning when I didn't get my Logwatch in the mail. Then I got a telephone call from a customer asking me why I hadn't responded to a Trouble Ticket he had created on Saturday afternoon (creating a TT sends an email via sendmail to all the support staff). I did a few tests and sendmail has just stopped working. The Logwatch had been created and had been sent to root, but all mail for root is redirected to my Mail Server on e different box (GroupWise). There was nothing wrong with the mail server, but sendmail has just stopped.

Fortunately I had created a snapshot before I applied the updates, so I reverted back to the snapshot and mail started working again, but I lost 2 days info because I had run the backup before I applied the patches. Now I see there are 132 Updates available, but there is obviously a problem somewhere in there!

CentOS 5 Hardware :: How To Clone CentOS Installation To Smaller Drive

May 9, 2010

I am trying to clone the hard drive to a slightly smaller hard drive in the same computer, same setup. What software or commands do you use to clone the entire system and resize the partition automatically? The original HD is a little larger than the destination HD. The source partition only has about 20 GB in use and the rest is blank.

I have 2 partition, a small 100MB boot partition and another 500GB LVM partition.I can't just clone from the original disk to the new disk. (for another long reason) I need to make an image of the original disk on an external USB drive first, then move that image onto a new disk.I have tried creating an image of the whole disk with Clonezilla, but then the restoration didn't work because the target drive is smaller than the original.

CentOS 5 :: LVM - Add The New Big Drive To The VG - Use Pvmove To Move The Smaller PV Onto The New PV

Apr 28, 2011

I have a volume group that is made up of a number of physical volumes. I am thinking of consolidating all the small physical volumes onto one big drive. Is there any benefit in this, besides making administration easier? How do I go about doing this? From what I have read, it looks like I should have to do the following

1. add the new big drive to the VG
2. use pvmove to move the smaller PV onto the new PV
3. use pvchange -xn to make sure the old PV can no longer be allocated
4. repeat for all the small PVs.
5. use pvremove to remove all the small PVs

Is this the correct procudure to follow?

CentOS 5 :: Tool To Standardize All .jpg Sizes And Make Them Smaller In Size

Jul 4, 2010

If I open my 3.3MB .jpg file in Microsoft Paint and re-save it as .jpg it will right away loose it's size and go down to 1.5MB and still keep the good quality.

I have 100s of these picture files, so I can't set down and do it one by one in Paint.

I am wondering if there is any command in Centos 5.4 or tool that I can use to not only make these files size smaller but also to standardize their size to let's say 800 X 600. The latter is not really needed but it will be bonus if someone can guide me.

I am running a php photo gallery script and it takes way to long to load the picture hence the requirement to lower the size for all the files.

I know that there is "mogrify" and "convert" but I think they don't work without GIMP. I don't have GIMP installed and I do install it I think it goes on to install a lot of gnome libraries which I am afraid might break my server or overload it too much. My CentOS doens't have any GUI or gnome package to it and I want to keep it simple.

Ubuntu :: Calibri And Cambria Fonts Looks Poor At Smaller Font Sizes?

Jan 12, 2011

Recently I installed some of the MS Office 2007 fonts onto my Ubuntu 10.10 machine in order to use them. Unfortunately, a few of them look really blocky at font sizes smaller than 16 pt. The two i'm having issues with are Calibri and Cambria. I don't seem to have this issue with any other set of fonts. Here is a screenshot of the issue in question. I remember having this same issue on 10.04, before I upgraded, if it means anything.

By the way, I took the fonts from a windows machine, on which the fonts were working properly.

CentOS 5 :: Emacs 21 Fonts Missing After 5.3 Upgrade?

Apr 14, 2009

After upgrading to CentOS 5.3, emacs is unable to locate its default font. (I've been able to supply emacs with a command-line or config-file link to a different installed font, but that's a workaround, not a solution.) I'm not sure if this is a packaging error, an error in our repository configuration, or something else. Below I've inserted some info that seems relevant. I'd be happy to post other information as requested. I've also attached a probably unnecessary screenshot of emacs displaying little blocks instead of characters at the very bottom of this post. Here's the command-line error thrown by emacs on startup:

[Code]...

whether one of emacs's needed fonts has been moved from one package to another in the latest upgrade. Or (most likely) it's something else I haven't thought of.

CentOS 5 :: Yum Not Finding Latest Version Of GLIBC

Mar 31, 2009

I'm new to the yum installation route and am looking forward to getting some experience using it, however, I am working to build a Nagios server through yum and have run into difficulties meeting the dependencies. (I'd previously installed from source on a different server though I'd been warned is a bad thing so I am trying to make nice and go this route but have run into snags right off...) The dependency hurdle I'm trying to overcome is getting to GLIBC2_4 from my version of 2.3.

I've read through a number of posts where people have had issues getting glib updated or gcc installed correctly. This is pretty much a new installation of CentOS (VM cloned off an earlier install that was taken just after going through the GUI setup). As far as I have gotten is 'yum update' which updated the kernel and openssl.

CentOS 5 :: Updating MySQL To The Latest Version?

Feb 4, 2010

I have CentOS 5.4 installed with lighty and MySQL installed via yum. not a problem. The issue become when I'm having problem with the current mysql that I installed via yum which I believe its currently at version 5.1.42-2. So I'd like to upgrade it to the latest available version of mysql. Except I can't figure out whether to download the generic glibc32 version or just get the RHEL5 version or find the mysql enterprise version somewhere. So, not knowing what I'm doing, I downloaded the RHEL5 version since it's closer to CentOS 5.4. Except for whatever reason the mysqli is not installed or configured properly and I'm not sure how to fix it.

Any suggestion? Everything was working nicely when I used yum to install, except the problem with the version of mysql that's offered in the repository. So I'd like to request a suggestion on how to either somehow upgrade mysql using yum and there's a different repository that I didn't know, or perhaps download a proper latest and greatest mysql, install and have it configured so that mysqli work properly.

CentOS 5 :: Part Of VLC 0.9.9 Broken With The Latest RPMs From Dag

Mar 31, 2011

Aside from a few minor issues, I've been happy with VLC 0.9.9.

I recently did a yum update to get to Centos 5.5. I've got yum pointed to Dag.

Everything worked fine, until I restarted VLC 0.9.9.

In the update it looks like ffmpeg was updated to the 6.X branch, x264, and how vlc 0.9.9 was recompiled.

wait wait wait.. let me clarify, vlc 0.9.9 still works, but a key function in it that i use has broken.

I am able to do a yum downgrade on x264 and ffmpeg, but I am unable to downgrade VLC because it tells me there is no down grade path. How do I go about requesting the previous version of VLC be added back to Dags RMP site?

I spent sometime hacking on things the last 2 days, and was able to compile using the same ./configure options that were compiled from Dag with ffmpeg 5.2, and x264 and I get them to compile cleanly. VLC 0.9.9 source compiles and the errors I'm hitting go away.

I don't think the ffmpeg 6.X rmp is broken, i just think its to new for vlc 0.9.9 and breaks certain functionality.

CentOS 5 :: How To Install Latest FFMPEG With Libx264 Support

Apr 8, 2009

I would like to install on my box FFMPEG with libx264 support. First of all I've tried yum install ffmpeg, but it occurs that it downloads a version from 2007 (?) and without libx264. Than I've tried this: [URL]. And everything goes ok till last ./configure:

And in this moment I do "make" and get:

libswscale/swscale.c:3409: warning: assignment discards qualifiers from pointer target type
make: *** [libswscale/swscale.o] Error 1

And as you can see I get a lots of errors. Tried to install it for 5 day now, How to make this work??

CentOS 5 :: SAMBA Upgrade With Yum Not Finding The Latest Version?

Jun 14, 2010

I have CentOS 5.5 installed on my Dell D600. This release includes SAMBA 3.0.
Question: Is there a way to use yum to upgrade / install the latest version of SAMBA (3.5.3)?

A "yum search samba" shows there is only the "samba3x" release available - which is SAMBA 3.0

I've downloaded the SAMBA3-3.5.3-43.el5.i386.rpm package for Cent OS 5 from the SAMBA.org site, but when I try to install it, it fails due to package dependencies.

Short of downloading the source and compiling it myself, is there a better method to get the latest version of SAMBA installed on my system?
