This is really frustrating..> I just successfully installed Kubuntu 11.04 and after updating the system and installing the recommended Nvidia driver, the fonts are crazy small.. See the attached screenshot.
I'm using the default font settings.. so I don't get why they would look so small.

I have tried to do a fresh install of Kubutu but I cannot install it due to the fonts on the installation process being tiny. I am using a HDTV as my monitor so could this be the problem?? I have no other monitor to utilize so where do I go from here?

Had to use my old zenwalk 5.2 disk to chroot in order to fix that. Then something else went wrong. Well, now I know what mkinitrd is good for, . Well, fuddling around some more, installing this intel driver, installing that intel driver until I finally found something that worked...However, I get better frame rate with glxgears than I did on 12.2, but when I move any windows they are a little choppy, plus the little tiny fonts which is rather annoying...Anyway, what else should I look at? Could it be xinarama support which I don't need?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen booting into my slack12 fluxbox desktop today my fonts were so small they were hard to read. The same is true if I use kde. I didn't change anything that I can think of. I tried running fc-cache but it didn't change anything. My xorg.conf hasnt changed. Interestingly, my xterm font didn't change size, but the konsole font is tiny like my other desktop fonts.

The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?
I have ubuntu installed on my laptop which works fine. It has a pcmcia wifi card. When I tried to run the kubuntu live cd it couldn't find the card. As the drivers will be the same how do I find the drivers to allow me to use kubuntu? I plan to make a live usb which I'll add the drivers to so that it'll work each time I plug in. Alternatively if I can find the drivers then I'll just enable them each time via the cd.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently changed my Graphic card drivers from Nouveau to nVIDIA in Suse 11.3 KDE.
One thing I have noticed that initially I had been using various Adobe Fonts in many applications prior to change of drivers. But after this change the looks of the same fonts became quite different, the length & breadth of "individual letters" changed quite a lot making them look not so beautiful as they were earlier. Am I missing something or is it a normal phenomenon. But I am satisfied with the present looks.
I installed Wine on my machine just a few minutes ago and as part of the installation the following packages are also installed: ttf-liberation,
ttf-mscorefonts-installer, ttf-symbol-replacement, ttf-tahoma-replacement. These add extra fonts to the system which I'm assuming are required by windows programs running inside Wine. The problem is though that Firefox also seems to be using these fonts because the fonts now look different inside Firefox. Not a huge difference, but you can tell they are different and they just don't look "right" to the eye. They are no longer as pleasing as they were when Firefox was using the default Ubuntu fonts.
Is there a way to keep these fonts for use by Wine, but not allow any other program on Ubuntu to use them?
I have clean installed my system to 11.04 and lost some important fonts of course. I am using specialist IPA fonts for some important documents, but the file is in exe form. However, I have that blocked executable bit problem. It's getting really annoying, as now many legitimate programs that I have can't be used on Linux anymore. All I need to do is extract the file and then let Ubuntu install the ttf (as it has done so in the past).

My question is, how can I install packages on kubuntu without a wired internet connection, and what packages should I download to be able to install the driver on kubuntu without getting errors?
My wireless card is Realtek 8192CE.

A tutorial says in order to add new fonts, take you font file and put them into a newly created directory inside your home folder and name it ".fonts". Reset and they will be ready to use.
I'm not able to do this from Nautilus View because of the error that I do not have permission to do so.
I have made the dir in terminal using sudo mkdir
moving the actual fonts from my desktop into the actual folder. I don't know how to do it.

Yesterday I installed wine-1.2 (using Synaptic), in order to be able to build programs for Windows. This in itself seemingly succeeded, but as a result of the installation, fonts in Firefox changed (one can say immediately - when the installation was done, the fonts had changed).
For example, in this forum, the non-monospaced font changed in some way I can't put my finger on. Right now, posts feel less readable, but getting used to it may just be a question of time.
Some other pages (in existing tabs, and when looking them up again) changed the font size, some increased the size, some decreased it. This can be fixed by using Ctrl-+ or Ctrl-- quite easily, but <whine> I would like these kind of changes not to happen at all </whine>.
I uninstalled wine (not removed completely - I don't know what the difference is), but this didn't undo the font change.
The font settings within Firefox (Preferences) don't seem to have been changed.
The point of this post is to ask what may have happened, where such dependencies between fonts are stored, and how to undo the change, in case I'd like to.
Is it possible to make WINE work without installing MS fonts? With only fonts that are in the system. Tried Google but no information.
View 4 Replies View Relatedbut something a lot of folks may not be aware of -- you don't have to go messing around over in /usr/share/fonts anymore if you've got a single-user type machine and just want some fonts for your personal desktop.Since I wipe most partitions when I upgrade (/home is on a separate one) this makes the fonts stay with my login. This is GNOME specific, I do believe KDE has a control panel to install fonts.
Obtain the TTF font(s) youd like to use; Ill use the custom Monaco Linux font as an example.

opensuse v11.2 The Gnome help describes how to install fonts: copy the font files to </usr/share/fonts>. I have some Type1 fonts with PFB, PFM, AFM and sometimes INF face files. The only ones I see in the <Type1> directory are AFM and PFA. Which font files does Gnome actually require? Is a PFA needed? Are the font files moved/deleted from </usr/share/fonts/> after installation? Is there a more obvious way to install fonts in Gnome?

fc-cache -fv .winfonts
And I see a message saying 453 new fonts, but I can't seem to use these fonts in any application.
currently using a CompaQ Altec Lansing laptop,which came with Windows 7 Pre-installed. It is the 64 bit version. The same day I got it I got Ubuntu on it as well, also in 64 bit.
I have had no problems with either of them. What I would like to do, is install Kubuntu 10.04 64 bit along side Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Is it possible? Or would i be stuck having to make a Wubi?
I switched my girlfriend laptop from windows 7 to Kubuntu 9.4, then upgraded to karmic koala. I was able to, through the hardware manager, install a software modem driver, and a firmware unwrapper driver for her broadcom 4.X series wireless adapter. Whenever I attempted to install the broadcom 4.1, 4.2. ect driver itself a package update would fail, but wireless functionality still worked nonetheless. My girlfriend has a TX1000 HP laptop, similar to this one:[URL]..Product number in the bios is GA648UA#ABA System Board ID is 30BF
The wireless drivers she needs are proprietary. This worked for a while, although seemingly at random her wireless would go out, and her analog sound driver for her Nvidia chipsets would too. Usually logging out of the KDE environment and back in fixed the issue. Now wireless is completely gone; using a hard ethernet core to the router still works. Even connected to the internet, the proprietary drivers that used to be available in the hardware manager aren't there anymore. Right before the driver disappeared, I updated the system with all the latest round of updates, and installed the base package and some plugins for VLC. I don't know how to role back packages to see if an update killed the wireless, I uninstalled the VLC software but that didn't help.
Wireless is checked enabled on my taskbar, and I have checked my bios and haven't found any setting to disable the wireless adapter. Anything networking related has been enabled. At this point I am rather frustrated with the stability of Kubuntu overall and would prefer a hard solution that will permanently fix the problem.
I was multitab browsing (around 15 tabs) in latest firefox for karmic koala (9.10) and at the same time downloading (probably already auto-installing) in synaptic-package-manager the package: textlive-fonts-extra (and other necessary packages; this was around 90 mb download and 250 mb installation)suddenly the pointer doesn't move anymore, (Alt+tab , and other combinations also didn't work anymore)

This may be different with 9.10 configuration (can anybody look to see which are necessary with 9.10) I think the computer wasn't responding anymore because I used too many tabs at ones. I had this same problem a few times before in the past weeks but then I wasn't installing something and the computer did restart and firefox restored all the tabs. I cannot enter /home/ from the livedisc (no permission) and it's necessary , I am in the middle of exams and i need to print the paper that is on the disc by monday Is there a way to enter it via command console?
I have installed SUSE 11.3 and I am using KDE4. I also installed the font "misc-console".
After installing the NVIDIA driver 256.53 the font misc-console becomes useless because it is displayed so much slanted that it is imposible to read. However, if I disable the NVIDIA driver (by replacing "nvidia" with "nv" in xorg.conf), then it works fine. It also works fine in KDE3 and the NVIDIA driver. So, it seems to be a combination between NVIDIA and KDE4. A lot other fonts are also overly slanted and unreadable (like "Sony fixed", "misc fixed", etc.).
If I launch konsole from a terminal, I receive the following warning:
konsole(6928) Konsole::TerminalDisplay::setVTFont: Using an unsupported variable-width font in the terminal. This may produce display errors.
Is there a way that I can use "misc-console" without having to uninstall the NVIDIA driver? I'm just used to this font for my terminal.
The same happens whether I install the driver manually or through YAST, 32 or 64 bit. The video card is NVIDIA 8400GS, the system Athlon 64 4400+
I recently installed KDE (I was using GNOME). After that, I found for gnome applications, KDE font settings is applied even when I log in using GNOME. Whatever I do in appearance-fonts, all gnome applications follow the settings from KDE Personal Settings. (Application Appearance -> Fonts)
I lost all the subpixel hinting, and I finally just found out that if I set it in KDE Personal Settings it actually affects gnome applications. (I'm in GNOME now)

Just installed it yesterday, I followed the instructions found here: [URL] but I get this error: "error: Failed dependencies: /usr/sbin/chkfontpath is needed by msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch" I found chkfontpath at rpm.pbone.net and put it in my rpms folder but now I get "xfs is needed by chkfontpath-1.10.1-2.fc13.i686"
