Anyone know why my fresh installation of centOS server is so slow? Seems like it takes over a minute to execute a command, im not doing anything complicated either. Secondly, how come at times when I type reboot the machine starts to beep, one long loud annoying beep.
View 5 RepliesI'm from a Solaris (printer.conf) background and having trouble setting up a printer on the network. My CentOS box does not have a GUI interface available. I have been playing with lpadmin trying to add a printer - which it did, but everything is disabled, and the "enable" command is not found on my machine.
How do I make a simple printer on my network talk to my centOS box?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that
I have recently installed MySQL Server on my CentOS box.
CentOS 5 MySQL 5.0.45 (installed using 'yum install mysql-server') I can start the daemon without error by issueing the following command: service mysqld start
The problem is that I want to use a number of the command line options available to mysqld, such as --verbose and When I issue '/etc/init.d/mysqld --verbose --help' I get the following output:

In Centos, my memory stick is /dev/sdc1, how do I, using command line: format it as /ext3, encrypt it using cryptsetup, and set a password?
It's a new install on a laptop, it looks like it installs fine, however after a boot I get login & password prompt and command line. I did choose GNOME desktop during the install.I know I will have problems to get 1080p resolution with my Intel integrated card Ironlake but at least I expect to have GNOME with min resolution 800x600.

I've run into one problem that is affecting two different desktop systems running CentOS 5.3.oth of these systems have the latest updates. These machines have standard network-attached printers. One is an HP LaserJet 3250 and the other is a model that is pretty close to that one.Previously these users were able to print from graphical applications such as Firefox, but now when the print dialog is opened on ANY graphical application, it causes a hard freeze on that particular app.Printing from the commandline via `lpr` gives no issues and test pages from the Printer Admin interface also succeed.This problem has me stumped, so I'm looking for any insight as to what could have changed. I do not know what changed between the time when the printers worked graphically and when they stopped, but the users assure that they have changed no settings. The only thing I can suspect is a rogue update since this is affecting separate users on separate machines with separate printers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble trying to get the kernel to accept some command line arguments for parport_pc during bootup. I have a custom base board with a PC-104 CPU board connected to it through the ISA bus. On the base board I have 3 parallel ports mapped to addresses, 0x150, 0x158, and 0x160. Only the first one needs interrupts, the second two do not. So, on bootup I load the parport_pc module like this modprobe parport_pc io=0x150,0x158,0x160 irq=3,none,none I have been running an older RedHat kernel, 2.6.11 for the past few years and this has been working flawlessly. I had the above modprobe call in /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
Now I am trying to set the system up to use CentOS 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.el5. What happens is, the module inserts OK, but the system never recognizes the ports. (i.e, they do not show up in /proc/ioports)
But, if I log into the system, then rmmod parport_pc, then re-modprobe it as above, it works just fine and now my ports are visible. This is an embedded system, expected to just come up and run, so kicking it into action by hand is not an option.
I have tried putting a parport_pc.modules file in /etc/sysconfig/modules so that it will be seen by rc.sysinit, (some site I found while googling said modprobes need to be done earlier than in rc.local),and again, the module gets inserted but the ports are not seen. I have also tried putting rediculously long pauses between each step of the modprobing of the parport stuff;

Notice that "chmod" and "touch" are part of the package coreutils which gets installed only after these commands are used. I'm seeing a similar problem with selinux being referenced before the libselinux package is installed. I can boot the resulting image but after the kernel boots it panics because it cannot find /dev/root which might or might not have something to do with the errors above.
I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online.

eth0 = 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 with gateway 192.168.0.1. This is currently working, and I can ssh o the machine on this address
eth1 = 192.168.150.5 255.255.255.0 with gateway 192.168.150.1
When I try and start eth1 with ifconfig eth1 up, I get the error message "eth1: unknown interface: no such device"
I have configured eth1 using system-config-network-tui and /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth1 looks correct
GATEWAY=192.168.150.1
TYPE=Ethernet
DEVICE=eth1
BOOTPROTO=none

Next week we will get a new Server for rent with a preinstalled Debian. If we download the Networkinstaller and put it in Grub, it is possible to set some settings with a script or commandline? We need SSH and the Network haves to run. So we have to set up the Networkadress , Gateway and Netmasq. So if the Networkinstaller is booting that we get direcly access with SSH to install CentOS. It is possible?
View 1 Replies View Relatedin my office I've setup a centos server which uses no GUI only the console with apache & mysql for testing purpose, notice that I haven't setup any vhost or any mysql db yet, so the load is 0.00 The strange thing that suddenly one day I tried to login to this "server" from my windows pc (in the next room) via putty , and since that day the "server" is very very slow. What do i mean? when I try to login with SSH it makes 15 seconds or more to ask me about login, and then about password (like it happens in a server with massive load). then when I type the command in the konsole it always delays between letters.
I run top -c and everything is dead (0.00) so there is no load. even If I ping -t localip the machine , after 3-4 pings I get "Request timed out". so I think something is wrong with the local network. If I get connected physicaly in the "server" and start pinging my windows pc it works great, everything is going fast, the konsole is fast (as it should be) and if I ping any other servers it also goes withoute a problem. The I think its not a problem with the "servers" network connection.
I've got an install of CentOS 5.3 in a VM which was installed without X or Gnome.I've added X (yum groupinstall 'X Window System') and Gnome (yum groupinstall 'GNOME Desktop Environment) and can now run startx no problem.However on boot I get a command line login rather than the graphical login screen one normally gets if Gnome is included at install time.What do I need to do to get the graphical login after boot?
