Sep 1, 2011i am trying to install upgrades for my ubuntu server via webmin, and i put in the command apt-get install imagemagick and when i do that i see the output and it asks me if i want to install, is there a command that will automatically force the installation so that way i dont have to hit yes or Y?

Apr 1, 2010I was having so much trouble with ubuntu 8.04 that I deleted off my computer and did a fresh install of 9.10. I downloaded the 64 bit iso from the internet, burned it to a disc and installed it. When it asked if it should be the server version I thought I said no. Now when I boot it only boots to the server version and all I get is command line. Can I get out of this and get my regular ubuntu screen back or did I install the wrong version?

I need to boot Ubuntu into a non-x, command line mode. So I can install an nvidia driver for my new GeForce GTX 260 (I had a GeForce 7900 running on my Ubuntu system using the synaptic open source 185 driver for nvidia, but there is no driver except the one I downloaded just now from nvidia's site for the GTX 260 card). That requires there be no X session running, not even in a separate domain so to speak. There is no rescue mode in Grub2. Recover mode in Grub still boots an X session (Gnome). Alt+F1 appears to be a clean command line terminal but even that does not work because the nvidia driver installer script sees through that ruse and knows there is an active Gnome session. I tried sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop and that did not work. I tried ctr+alt+backspace and that did nothing.
What can I do? I tell you some days linux is just too frustrating, about to just toss the baby with the bath water and go back to Winblows. Bought a new graphics card today, and here I am stuck not being able to even install the driver from a command line prompt, geesh.

Ubuntu :: Computer Stuck In Command Line Mode
Oct 5, 2010I just loaded up the Ubuntu 10.04 onto a newly scratch built computer. It went to the desktop after loading up and asking for my password. I then navigated to SYS>ADMIN>DRIVERS and preceded with download of recommended drivers for Nvadia G430 on-board display adapter. Restarted the computer to activate the new drivers and it's stuck in Command Line Mode. I tried Ctrl/Alt/F7 to escape, along with a bunch of other things but nothing will kick this puppy into the desktop.

Apr 16, 2011my fedora 14 did an automatic update tonight and on reboot it hangs displaying the "f" before the login in menu. The "f" is how I now feel.I do "fn+f2" as it is booting and it displays the sequence of loading items which report all is "ok" until it gets to "jexec services" and then it hangs.I do not know how to access the machine in command line mode and I am not sure what to do from here. I beleive the "jexec service" is a Sun Java item but I am not sure.

Apr 12, 2010The GUI for network configuration of Fedora is marvellous such that the configuration is almost fool-proof. But how can I make the connection by hand in the command line mode? It goes okay except the very last step. When I disconnect the eth0 interface from the right-hand side of the desktop GUI, I tested how to bring it back by command line but I failed. When disconnected, the ifconfig still shows the eth0 interface, with just the ip address portion changed.
I tried "ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.xx" to give it an ip address but the connection is still down even if the ifconfig shows an ip address for the eth0 interface. Then I tried "/etc/init.d/network restart" and "ifup eth0" and also "route add defaut gw 192.168.1.1" but none of these could accomplish the same work as a single click on the GUI to connect. I am very curious about how to do it in the terminal.

Dec 19, 2009I'm a Linux newbie and don't know how to do a lot of things. Five months ago, I asked a friend at FreeGeek Columbus to delete the extaneous operating systems from my computer just leaving the one I used, and he accidentally deleted them all. No problem, I'll just reinstall when I get home. But everytime I try to reinstall K/Ubuntu, I get an error message saying
Installation Failed. The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:
[errno 5] Input/output error.
That happens with four Ubuntu installation Cds, three live Ubuntu Cds, one Kubuntu live CD, and one Fedora live CD. I suppose there's a problem with my DVD rom. PCLinuxOS and openSUSE, however, do install, so those are what I've been using (I've only recently ceased with openSUSE, for the time being). Today, however, I got lucky trying out something different. I used an Ubuntu 9.04 alternative CD (not live as they abort when they come to the input/output error message) to install the base system and grub with lvm.
It allows me skip over software installation which is where the input/output error message happens. It boots to a command line. I don't know what commands to use to get the software to install from a mirror, or how to install repositories from the command line. I've never had Kubuntu, per se (only Ubuntu with the KDE desktop); so since PCLinuxOS GNOME 2010 (a rolling distro) is more stable and polished than Ubuntu 9.10, I'd like to fill my base system out with Kubuntu software.

Aug 21, 2010well, gonna straight-explain what I`ve here: had a Win7 64bit installed machine and created a D drive as I was intended to install Suse there (so it`s `Extended`) after succesfully installed SLED and finally restarted the laptop to see use Win7 again there was no Loader for me to choose which Operation System (I have another machine with XP,Ubuntu and Pardus - never had sucha problem)then I had to chose SLED of course but this time it didn`t bring me to the login page but to the Command Line of SLED, and the thing is that I can`t use command line on linux. tried several times and with failsafe login but stıll having command line and there is no Win7 to run on Loader.

CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
