Server :: If Server Failed Or Offline - Any Way To Check Status?
Mar 9, 2011
I would like to implement something when a server is offline for whatever reason. For example. I got my own DNS servers and webservers. I would like it if the users goes to www.somedomain.com and the server it is actually on is down for maint. or For whatever not able to respond. What can be done so that if the server isn't able to be contacted that it can point to either a another server or the dns somehow can display a page stating who to contact to report a problem or to let them know its down for maint. And can goto a site to check the status or whatever.
After searching the forum I could not find a clear answer to my question so I am giving it a try...
I have installed a LAMP server with Postfix as mail server. The scripts send email as user www-data using the mail server on the same machine.
However, the email got rejected by external mail servers (failed reverse DNS check) so I setup a mail server that meets all needed requirements.
Now I would like to use this second server instead of the mail server on the LAMP server. I found that this could be done with changing sendmail settings in php.ini (I think).
However I am not sure how that will go: www-data is no actual user on the new email server (which requires authentication before sending). Do I need to create a new user on the email server or change the settings in php.ini to match an existing user?
I tried changing the source to a few different ones and I picked "Select Best Server". Still getting the same msg. I am on a wired connection and there is nothing wrong with my connection.Anyone know the solution if not how do I install nvida drivers?

We're running a sendmail server on a fedora core 9 which we've configured recently. The problem is, the server is working fine but there are some e-mails that enter our server but doesn't get forwarded to the user.
Here it says "stat=Sent" but nothing from the above mail address has been received on the client's inbox. We've experienced this with Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express and Thunderbird alike so far with Two(2) of our user accounts.

I am trying to solve a problem where Apache stats aren't displaying correctly in Munin. I've ran through quite a bit of checks and tests regarding Munin setup, but I think my issue is related to Apache, but my skill set there is lacking.

I installed denyhosts with yum and then tried to run it with the command line command"sudo /etc/init.d/denyhosts start" but I got the message"Job Failed. See system logs and 'systemctl status' for details [FAILED]"and in the application "services" in the applications menu,t shows an exclamation warning and says that "This unit has failed"

I need a script that I can run on an hourly basis that will:
1. Calculate the total downtime since the first date 2. The overall downtime percentage 3. Store this data in a file at /home/bla/file.txt, in the following format: TotalDowntime=03:02:02 Average=0.01%
How do clients handle offline syslog servers? Will the log files be buffered locally to be sent to the syslog server when it comes back online, or will any log data generated during downtime be lost in cyber space?
I am getting these error in RHEL 5.3 while i did "yum update".
---> Package libstdc++-devel.i386 0:4.1.2-46.el5_4.2 set to be updated ---> Package libstdc++-devel.x86_64 0:4.1.2-46.el5_4.2 set to be updated ---> Package libstdc++44-devel.i386 0:4.4.0-6.el5 set to be updated
The program package-cleanup is found in the yum-utils package.

I am running 2 Ubuntu servers, one as UEC frontend and the other as UEC node. I started, last night, the server upgrade on the frontend. As it promised to take several hours I left it alone to proceed through the night. This morning it was waiting on a prompt which, by virtue of hitting esc to relight the monitor, it continued upgrading packages. At some point subsequent to that it paused on a discrepancy between the eucalyptus.conf file the install wanted to save and the eucalyptus.conf file that existed. I reviewed the deltas and determined that the current, as it existed, would suffice. I received 3 more messages on the console:
Installing new version of config file /etc/init/eucalyptus-network.conf. Installing new version of config file /etc/init/eucalyptus-conf... eucalyptus start/running process 15290 Then no further console messages nor apparent disk or cpu activity I can shell into the machine and see the following: Code: root 7077 6784 0 Apr29 tty1 00:00:33 /usr/bin/python /tmp/update-manager-0r8nH5/natty --mode=server --frontend=DistUpgradeViewText

We have a Dell Poweredge 1750 server with 2 harddrives in RAID 1 running Debian Etch. Yesterday one of the hardrives stopped working but no error message appeared in syslog. The only indication was the amber LED diode. Is there a software way how to check that both disks are OK?
