View 9 RepliesI have a wordpress blogging server up and running and i've also got nagios monitoring the speed of webpage download etc.The thing is a couple of weeks ago nagios alerted me that the blog was returning pages really slow loading, when i went to the blog homepage for me also it was very slow. After about 30mins of http connections some finally loading and some not nagios stopped reporting issues, but thats not the end of the story, the graphing of speed i've got set-up on nagios shows quite clearly that ever since that big slow down the pages take avg of extra 2-3 seconds to load. However nothing drastic has changed and the datasize of the page hasn't really changed at all (also monitored).
During that weird period I carried out checks on the server itself like top, free -m, netstat (looking for maybe DOS attack number of connections), looked at mysql see if that was running slow and what processes it was running, checked on number of http processes see if they had ramped up, checked on php and web server errors see if they had increased some what as well. None of these things turned up anything noticeable to be causing such slow blog response. Now its still that average amount high and i'm lost at why this could be? Its niggling at me that something may have got in but i've taken several security steps to try and lock down the wordpress install etc.
When i checked my server in today morning,i found server was hang.
How can i find whether it is hang or not?
Where can i find the log from which i can find the exact time?
I have a RHEL5 machine having mysql5.0.22 is installed in it. i also installed java through "jdk-1_5_0_19-linux-i586.bin" package, and its version is 1.5.0_19. I am trying to check if any JDBC driver for Mysql Server is installed on my system . How can I do this? If any driver is already installed How can I get the file path for those driver files? is it comes along with jdk packages? As i am not a programmer, and does't know more about jdbc.

I have installed a LAMP server with Postfix as mail server. The scripts send email as user www-data using the mail server on the same machine.
However, the email got rejected by external mail servers (failed reverse DNS check) so I setup a mail server that meets all needed requirements.
Now I would like to use this second server instead of the mail server on the LAMP server. I found that this could be done with changing sendmail settings in php.ini (I think).
However I am not sure how that will go: www-data is no actual user on the new email server (which requires authentication before sending). Do I need to create a new user on the email server or change the settings in php.ini to match an existing user?
There is a server which was installed 3 days back. It got Cent OS 5.4 64 Bit with 4 GB RAM. Apache, MySQL, PHP and vsFTPd were installed using yum.Server was on the network and approx 100 visitors were on the website. All of sudden server got down. It stopping responding ping. Server guys told that server got down and after a request submission, they restarted server. However reason of the problem is still unknown. I logged in to shell via SSH and checked /var/log/messages file, but didn't find any record which indicate cause of system shutdown. However dates in this file aren't in chronological order.
Is there any way or log file to check for the exact reason, why system got down. One reason could be hardware fault (for that I am going to ask hosting company to run diagnostics). Other reason could be a software/os bug. Is there any tool / log file to check and diagnose the cause.
I have high load average on the servers with no identified reason (From my point of view)

For no apparent reason, the server will just be powered off.I've looked in the dmesg log and /var/log/messages file, but that doesnt show anything, except the "syslogd 1.4.1: restart." message after booting it up again, and hours in advance of the crash a "suhosin" alert message.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to implement something when a server is offline for whatever reason. For example. I got my own DNS servers and webservers. I would like it if the users goes to www.somedomain.com and the server it is actually on is down for maint. or For whatever not able to respond. What can be done so that if the server isn't able to be contacted that it can point to either a another server or the dns somehow can display a page stating who to contact to report a problem or to let them know its down for maint. And can goto a site to check the status or whatever.

I experience X crashes on a frequent level. First it happened with the current stable nvidia 180 driver, and the nonfree flash player (....., vimeo, etc). I replaced the stable nvidia driver with the 180-dev driver which fixed the flash problem. However it still happens that the X chashes without any reason or pattern. One time it crashed the moment I wanted to save a PDF file to my HDD downloading it with Firefox, another time it crashed while idling. I use an Alienware M15x with a nvidia 260M. Compiz is installed and active. Which other data or logs do you need?

Sendmail isn't sending mail for some reason and keeping it in the Queue. I attemped to flush them but it deferres the connection to the server in which it is trying to relay the message to. I have checked to see if there is a DNS error or anything like that. I attemped to flush the messages through webmin.
This is the result.

I am not finding anything in the logs to let me know their is an error. I can ping the mail servers that it is trying to send to. Now it has started delaying when ping MX servers. So I knew something was starting to mess with it. I have checked the /etc/hosts. It is correct. The server isn't black listed. Mail to root just gives me.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running several Ubuntu servers with LTSP thin clients in our classrooms. It's been a royal pain trying to get them to synchronize time properly.Currently I'm looking at 7 client's login screen and each one has different time. It's frustrating and I've done all the reading I could in regard to NTP and LTSP with time, etc.I'm trying to even set NTP to point to an external server, but my thin clients don't get that setting for some reason. They still pick whatever time they want to present to the end user. Once the user logs in, the time seems to be fine. It's just at the login screen.Since I'm no expert on NTP I figured I'd ask to see what users here thought.
EDIT - I was told that the GUI version of Ubuntu handles NTP at System-Administration-TimeAndDate. Is this true? I was told my /etc/ntp.conf file is empty because that file is only used in the server edition of Ubuntu.
How do I make a server wait on shutdown for a set amount of time?I tried making a service that just does Code: sleep 7m and made it first priority on shutdown but it seems to ignore itI'm pretty sure it runs... I'm currently testing that to make sure

School with linux running on students' laptops, connecting via wlan to a Debian NFS and LDAP server. Every student logs on his/her profile residing on the NFS server. The clients are set up with autofs. Earlier, I had set up the wireless network in /etc/network/interfaces, but this time I decided to configure network manager so as to bring up both wireless and wired network before logon. This setup has been working on for the last fire or five years with only minor changes. Also worked with Karmic Koala, but still with the interfaces file instead of networkmanager. The Vostro is also new here, we've previously used mostly Dell Latitude D505s.
So here is what works:
1: Clients can log on to LDAP and NFS servers both wired and wirelessly. Everything is smooth.
2: While on LAN, shutdown and restart works flawlessly (and quick as a breeze, I'm really impressed by startup/restart/shutdown times, under 25 secs!).
3: Shutdown and restart also works wirelessly when doing it either from a local account or from the GDM chooser.
What doesn't work, however, is shutting down or restarting directly from a networked account connected while only being connected over the wireless network. This is what's being displayed on the terminal after it has tried tho shut down for a while:
Code:
The system is going down for halt NOW!
acpid: exiting
init: cron main process (1011) killed by TERM signal.
init: tty1 main process (1365) killed by TERM signal.
[code]...
If I try ctrl-alt-del at this stage, it says:
"init: rc main process (3030) killed by TERM signal"
"Checking for running unattended-upgrades: "
And then it will hang again, until I hold the powerbutton for some seconds. The unattended-upgrades part is what seems to be the culprit. I suspect it is about the wireless network not being connected any longer or something like that, but I'm not sure about how to go about debugging shutdown scripts here. I'd be grateful for pointers. I will try and see how it goes with the old interfaces file setup, but I'd rather make nm work.
For some reason, the server will "freeze" on occasion for no known reason. The processes keep running, but commands take a long time to complete. for example, I can open up two SSH windows. I can use the "top" command in one, and it will continue to show me the information, updating regularly. The memory and CPU useage both stay within acceptable norms. In the second SSH window, I can issue even simple commands like "ls" and it will freeze for about two minutes before completing the command. This is intermittent, but it's affecting the loading of websites on the server. It affects updates and upgrades, too.Everything freezes, but "top" just keeps happily running along.I'm suspecting a hard drive issue, although the hard drive checks clean when I check it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an easy way to check if some server is down, and then act upon it. This check needs to be done from the backup-server. So if the backup-server thinks the production server is down, then in some bash script I want to execute a rule.
My question: what is an easy way to check another server ?
1. I know about Nagios. It's great, but to large to use here.
2. I could ping the server, put a ping that fails does not necessarily mean the server is down.
I am trying to control access to a web page, so that, if someone is seeing the page, no one else should be able to see it, and should be redirected to another page.
Right now I am using PHP for the pages, and I have LAMP installed.
Is there a way to do this??
