I have 3 accounts setup on this machine. One is root, one is my own, and one is for my kids. My account and root work fine, but today when I tried to log my kids on, startx fails (it also fails from runlevel4). I have tried creating new accounts and they fail as well. I'm not sure when the issue started, but it's been less than a week I believe. The consistent error which I receive is

I have SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 running on HP Mini 2133. It's been working like a dream since I got it, but one day I got the following error message when booting it: Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose problem? <Yes> <No>.
X server output says alot of things, but I think this is the most important:

after I installed graphical ATI drivers for my Ubuntu distribution version 10.10 running on a Acer laptop, it told me to restart and since then I cannot boot GNOME. Whenever I start the laptop, I just get a command prompt with username and password. I can browse through my files using changedir and other commands. After logging in I typed 'startx' and it gave me alot of errors:

I installed Red-hat 5.3. Problem is that it is not showing graphical interface. Only kernel / command prompt is available. I tried startx, then I got this msg. No video BIOS modes for chosen depth. Also showing that:

I made a system in CentOS5.5. I used Tomcat6 and PostgreSQL. But I couldn't enter my system. There are some error. And I don't understand what kind of error this.

I have got xorg and gnome-core installed. 1. Some one told me to change the xorg.conf file but i failed because there is no such file in the given location
2. Some one told me to create it using system-config-display but for fedora 14 there is no package for that

that's my first linux server. on my root is CentOS already installed. when i connect via "Remote Desktop Viewer" i log in with my accout.

I am having a strange problem with the Opensuse 11.2 Xorg server. Graphics hardware is Nvidia Quadro FX-5000, driver is ver 190.53. 90% of the time, I am getting a seg violation from the Xserver on trying to login via kdm:

So far, it doesn't seem to be user dependent (happens either as root or joe random user,) Again, so far, it only seems to happen with "driver nvidia" enabled in the config file, not with "driver nv" The failure occurs shortly after hitting return on the login screen. After it fails, it starts up a new Xserver, and presents a new login screen. Repeated attempts seem to *eventually* succeed, but 90% of the time, it fails I strongly suspect the Nvidia driver, but I have not been able to find anything documenting any similar problems.
I got a problem with my CentOS server. Somebody told me OpenVPN Requires different changes inside my firewall settings. That could be the problem why openvpn wont load..I receive this error on my CentOS panel when im trying to connect into the centos openvpn (with my winxp pc):

I have this old box that I used at school that I wanted to re-purpose and use. So i decided to that I wanted to run xp, ubuntu studio and slackware so I can learn about linux and do some other things with xp. I think I got through the installatiosa all fine and dandy, and I installed grub for my boot loader, I can boot into studio and xp, but I cant get into slackware. the grub boot menu is sorta funky too, it shows a generic and recovery mode for studio which is fine, and then another option for xp, some memory test boot option, but then for slackware it shows "Slackware Linux (Slackware 13.1.0) (on /dev/sda4) four times in a row. If I select any of them they all end up with some error; the third SW [slackware] option down the list of the repeated 4 allows me to sign into root, but when I type "startx" i get :

but thats with a lot of other text above that. if you need any more details, please dont hesitate to request for them. I'm going to take some time and cool down. I'm trying to get these three OSes running from one HD. I've partitioned the 80 gig drive as follows

I know similar questions have been asked but I could find an answer to my exact question. Especially in anything like laymans terms. So when I try to start my iMac G4 running linux it starts, runs lines of code, flashes black then back to code several times then "Failed to start the X server.... output to diagnose the problem..." When I click yes here is what I get:

In the mean time codes like the following appear on the side of the screen :

I have intalled RADIUS server on one machine which has fedora 10. I have installed freeradius-server-2.1.10 on it(server machine IP 10.150.110.42).
I have one more machine with redhat linux on which i have installed pam_radius-1.3.17(client machine IP 10.150.113.4).

Above mentioned is my configuration. when i try to connect client with SSH it is not sending a request for authenticating user to RADIUS server. what else configuration i have to do, or if there are any mistakes in my configuration
If your machine is connected to the Internet, you'll probably want to disallow ssh password authentication (which is advised but not mandatory). Edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and change/add the following lines:
PasswordAuthentication no
AllowUsers nx
Don't forget to restart the sshd daemon after making that change: service sshd restart I already have PasswordAuthentication yes in my file as I need it to login to the server through ssh. Do I just skip that line and only add AllowUsers nx mynxuser at the end? Also, I followed the rest of the manual and when I tried the client on Windows it failed: I put in a user and password to login but shouldn't it be using the key instead? I think the problem is related to the above due to:

i have some problems to start my dovecot server. I tried to install it from webmin using "un-used modules" but it was allways the same error: "E: Unable to locate package dovecot-pop3d".When I tried to install it from console using the commands: apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d dovecot-common - and there are no problems with dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common, but still the same error with dovecot-pop3d. After command: service dovecot status: could not access PID file for dovecot ... failed!

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis box is running 10.04 server, it's been running perfectly for almost 6 weeks. It's only function in life is running MailArchiva which is an ediscovery package, runs very well. Anyhow, yesterday the boss tells me he wants to do something else so the last thing I did was an apt-get update and an apt-get upgrade, no errors were observed, I seem to remember like 8 updates were available, this is what I've normally done in the past to keep it current. The last thing I did after that was shutdown -r now.
This morning I can't get into the box, I reconnected a monitor to it and this is the error I'm getting when it stops after about 9 lines into the boot process;
modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting padlock_sha (/lib/modules/2.6.32-24-server/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-sha.ko): No such device.
This is a mystery to me, the system is not encrypted. The only stuff that is belongs to MailArchiva. Anyhow someone evidently made off with my install cd so I am downloading another to see if I can repair this but I have no idea what broke.
Ubuntu 10.10 Whenever I try to boot up now I get a command line environment instead of the normal gnome desktop. The first error message that comes up is: "Screens found,but none have a usable configuration" further down: "Fatal server error: no screens found" Any way I can re-configure so it detects my monitor?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using with success NX server and client on Ubuntu 11.04 on both side. Yesterday the server crashed and now the client can't connect to it. The client works well because if I try to connect to an other server it works well and if I try to connect to this server with an other user it works well. So I think that there is a problem with my user. I have tried to solve the problem as explained in the details of the error. Unfortunately there is no file /var/log/messages so I can't search the code of the exception.

I've installed 9.10 on a work station with success. I've got an nvidia quadro fx 3000 and its supported under nvidia legacy driver apparently. So I've tried to install the driver with no success. Xorg.0.log reports a fatal server error no screens found. I get a flashing console login when I boot with "nvidia" device driver in xorg.conf, it boots fine with "nv". No matter what I try I cant get it to boot with nvidia drivers. Also, on a side note, after initially installing nvidia driver thru hardware in gnome, I no longer have a grub loader option to select recovery or anything else. Upon boot it displays "grub" briefly then continues to boot to gui. I've set the delay to 20 seconds with no results.
Resolved the issue of the display, now on to the grub menu.
