Back in April I set up a Ubuntu DHCP server and a multiple VLAN network [URL] to migrate our various servers, workstations, etc off the 192.168.1.1 /24 network that everything was on because we where running out of address space. I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.
Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto vlan100
iface vlan100 inet static
[code]....
why it can't reach the gateway, when I do a tcpdump I can see the DHCP requests come in on eth0 but the server never responds and I'm pretty sure its because it isn't "seeing" them since it thinks there isn't a network connection but I don't know how to trouble shoot to find out where the problem lies.

I am puzzled with trying to configure a linux (openSUSE) client to dhcp to eBox DHCP server. I am using dhclient to lease an IP address with dhclient eth0 -s 10.45.48.108 and get a response
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67 interval 4
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 10.45.48.108
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: Network is unreachable
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: please consult README file regarding broadcast address.
The server reports eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.45.200.2 to 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?

Currently I have my eth0 interface getting a DHCP address but at times the DHCP server will not be reachable. Sooo what I would like my server to do is if it cannot find a DHCP server assign a static address to eth0. Then start the DHCP service so it can then dish out some addresses. How can I do this? Surely it is possible

I have an embedded device for which I've created an html configuration page. This page allows you to set static IPs, dhcp, and can scan for wireless devices. My problem is that in order to access the device it requires that it runs as a dhcp server otherwise people are not assigned an IP and so can not access the embedded devices static IP. (This config page is for the laymen and so they are not the type who are able to set up their own static IPs). One of the potential options is to have the device connect to the network on eth0 acting as a dhcp client. However this prevents me from running a dhcp server. One solution I can think of is running a dhcp server only if it doesn't detect another dhcp server running on the network.

I'm no expert on DHCP. My problem is that i have a CentOS 5.5 server on which i want to install a DHCP server. I have two NICs where eth0 has access to the internet and where eth1 should act as an DHCP server.
I have installed dhcpd and this is how my dhcpd.conf file looks like.
Code:
ifconfig looks like this
Code:
When i start dhcpd on eth1 i get no error messages but when i connect any devices to eth1 they don't get any IP. I cant find anything in any logs about devices trying to get an IP address. I dont have any firewall rules in iptables.

I wanted to setup my server as a router/gateway just for educational purposes and also when it succeeded i will keep the gateway and place it on the front line right after my modem.
My current setup as it is now :
The GATEWAY/ROUTER will be doing the main work to act as a dhcp server and firewall.
Now my setup as it is now :
So now what i ment to do was :
Let the clients connect to the gateway via ETH1 and all the stuff being router to ETH0 which is the NIC that is connected to the internet.
But now i have two huge problems :
1. The DHCP configuration seems to be fine the client machines get their ip adresses and /etc/resolve.conf looks fine to. But somehow the GATEWAY/ROUTER wont let me use the specified external DNs server so i cant do anything on these machines.
2. The firewall script [url] at line 27 should be DROP but if i use this line of code the GATEWAY/ROUTER cannot use his dns server settings so when i try to browse the internet or ping a machine outside my local network it would came up with nothing.

I have a openSUSE10.2(X86-64) Linux DHCP Server in my environment. It has a lot of VM's and Desktop systems which get added continuously. Also, it has a lots of Static-IP entries.Part-IIssue:The DHCP Server stopped leasing the IP's somehow.Workaround:1. Stopped the dhcpd service. (service dhcpd stop)2. Navigated to /var/lib/dhcp/db folder.3. Deleted the "dhcpd.leases" and "dhcpd.leases~" files.4. Recreated the "dhcpd.leases" file. (touch dhcpd.leases)5. Started the dhcpd service. (service dhcpd stop)

Just looking for the best/most reliable setup. In a nutshell, I would love to have a Domain Controller no DHCP File server. I want to leave the DHCP to the router. I need virtual to run a software off from it. Samba server and that is basically it. My questions are:
1. Can I have a Domain Controller without DHCP server?
2. Should I run virtual server headless? so I dont install any gui?
3. This should have been my 1st question. I have two disks, is raid handled by the Bios or do I have to do something in linux(DMRAID)?
I have worked with many if not all the things I have mentioned here, however, I have never done it from scratch.

I am implementing an automated backup scheme so I created a shell script which first creates SQL dumps for all MySQL databases, then retrieves all websites from the /var/www directory of a remote server. The latter is working as I am using rsync to get the remote files. However, the MySQL dumps being retrieved are the ones from the local server which is not what I want. I want to get the SQL dumps from the remote server as well.I have a tunnel between the local and remote server which I can connect to without using any password (I added the public key to the authorized_hosts), so I tried to add the following code to the script:
ssh user@192.168.x.xxx
I then attempted to retrieve the SQL dumps and exited from the remote server. However this does not work as I still have to enter exit manually in the terminal for the SQL dumps to be retrieved from the remote host. I don't know why this is happening. This is what the script is trying to do:
//connect to remote server
ssh user@192.168.x.xxx
//retrieve SQL dumps
[code]...
Is there a way to connect to the remote host AND run the script's code on THAT remote host?

I have server which has "Xen/debian" installed. On this there is a virtual machine which has "Debian" installed. This virtual machine is used as a dhcp server for the network. Since yesterday, its not leasing any ip address! when i connect its ethernet cable to switch it says "eth0: received packet with its own address as IP address". the only thing that i remember (which might have caused the problem) is adding a mirror server(a different machine). The dhcp server gave it the address 192.168.1.1(the network is 192.168.1.0/24) and it was working fine. anyone knows how to solve the problem?

I have a computer lying around here and decided to turn it into a server. I installed Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 and was wondering what software would be best for it. I already have some software in mind but wanted to know if anyone here has a better aproach to my needs.
I wanted it to serve as:
-HTTP server; Apache
-File server for other computers on the network; Samba
-Streaming music server; SubSonic
-DHCP server; dhcpd3
[Code]...
What special care should I take on configuring it all, taking into account that I'll be using two ethernet cards (LAN & WAN)? Also the DNS part seems really tricky to me, as my needs are to resolve network names in my network.. (I can't ping any computer by name and file sharing becomes difficult)

authors recommended to upload pages of a site in a condensed form to the server to save in uploads and downloads by visitors. This involved removing all unwanted spaces and making one single string whenever possible. Is this approach still encouraged? Is there software that does that and respects the line-oriented scripts like Javascript embeded in HTML code?

There is a partnering website that provides an RSS feed to display on the website I am working on. The website displays information on the feed every time a user accesses the website. The feed changes almost every day. For bandwidth considerations and speed, I would like to download the feed once by the server using a crontab job (my website is in a linux shared hosting environment). The problem exists with the URL structure, which I have no control over.
Here is the URL:
Code:
[code]....
I am aware that there are characters that need escaping and this is where I am getting my errors. I have never written a shell-script but I am also assuming some of the characters are keywords in the Shell Scripting language or Linux I am also aware that I can avoid having to escape by enclosing the URL with single or double quotes. You will notice that the URL has BOTH single and double quotes, so its not as simple.

I have a network with one of the server machine being under Fedora 14 and the clients machines being under Windows 7 and Fedora 14.
Quite often I get some difficulties for the clients to get an IP address from the dhcp server. If I look at the server logs, it looks like the server sees the requests and sends and answer:
