Ubuntu Servers :: How To Block Torrents By Using Squid Or Firewall
Jan 5, 2010I've been all around the net and can't find a "simple" answer how to block our LAN users from downloading torrents. Is it really that difficult?
Here's our setup:
1. The Server's Configs:
2. sudo gedit /etc/squid/squid.conf
3. sudo gedit /etc/rc.local (to start Firewall rules on bootup)
4. Server NOT a DHCP Server
5. No other iptables rules are configured, just the above ones.
Before in a 1 NIC setup, I blocked Workstations MAC addresses in the Router + Squid Proxy Server (Not Transparent), it worked, but some Online Java Apps didn't work and users can't send/receive email so I abandoned the method.
Now, I installed transparent Squid Proxy with 2 NIC cards, it works, but workstations can still download torrents! I know Squid doesn't block ports, right? So the answer must lie in Iptables Firewall? I basically use Squid just to deny access to Facebook, Friendster, or other "unproductive sites".

I've heard that it's better just to allow regular ports (80, 22, 465, etc...) then block all the rest, this way, you can prevent unnecessary ports.
I'm not an Iptables/Firewall expert so can you pls. explain it a bit more detailed if that's the case.
I'm also aware of just telling our users NOT to download torrents, but I just want to prohibit it entirely.
I know I will be the most "uncool" employee in our office.

Jun 2, 2010I just installed Fedora 13 and i noticed a very annoying problem. I cannot type in Cyrillic in any of GNOME`s applications, however i can type in Cyrillic in other programs - like Firefox for example. I`ve tried in Rhythmbox, network manager (the configuration dialogs), gedit, nautilus, etc. I`ve also tried in Firefox where it works and for now is my only non GNOME application. The curios thing is that Cyrillic does work in gnome-terminal... I am currently using Bulgarian phonetic traditional layout but i`ve also tried with Russian and Macedonian without success. My Fedora installation is fully updated.

Nov 2, 2010Everything was fine after fresh install of kubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, until today. I was exploring system settings (didn't change anything, just looking) when KDE crashed suddenly. After restart I found all my filenames with Russian letters corrupted - just like filesystem was mounted with wrong encoding. How can I get them back to normal?

Jul 1, 2011my problem is that I can't extract some files because of a problem with cyrillic fonts (at least, this is what I suspect). The point is that I download some kind of files, which are fully functional to extract and open in windows but in Ubuntu trying the same thing, ends with an error. Files are downloaded from a russian web, so I think the fonts are cyrillic, which is the root of the problem. In windows they are shown as some kind of rare ASCII string but it's OK to open them.
The problem when trying in Ubuntu is that the file is shown as a large string with question marks '?' replacing all non-latin characters and it may cause problem, as it is the wildcard shell character in Linux. Renaming the file seems as an impossible task too. I have to process many of these files. Does Anyone know how can I avoid windows to do this? I tried to install many packages for cyrillic/russian support through synaptic nut it didn't seem to work.

Squid document says that Squid accepts only HTTP requests but speaks FTP on the server side when FTP object are requested.
We call Squid HTTP and FTP caching proxy server. Does it also caches FTP contents? Is it possible to configure FTP clients to use Squid cache? When we make an FTP request to an FTP site via Squid will it be bypassed?
