View 7 RepliesI have a DHCP server running on CentOS and for some reason it is assigning the highest number from the IP range as a first one?
- range 192.168.1.20 - 192.168.1.50 - so the first IP on my PC recived from this DHCP server was .50 - is it normal behaviour?
Config file:
This dhcp server is configured with redhat enterprise edition. I found that logs are generating in the following path /var/log my doubt is how can i setup the logs generating for a specified day.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBack in April I set up a Ubuntu DHCP server and a multiple VLAN network [URL] to migrate our various servers, workstations, etc off the 192.168.1.1 /24 network that everything was on because we where running out of address space. I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.
Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto vlan100
iface vlan100 inet static
[code]....
why it can't reach the gateway, when I do a tcpdump I can see the DHCP requests come in on eth0 but the server never responds and I'm pretty sure its because it isn't "seeing" them since it thinks there isn't a network connection but I don't know how to trouble shoot to find out where the problem lies.

I am puzzled with trying to configure a linux (openSUSE) client to dhcp to eBox DHCP server. I am using dhclient to lease an IP address with dhclient eth0 -s 10.45.48.108 and get a response
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67 interval 4
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 10.45.48.108
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: Network is unreachable
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: please consult README file regarding broadcast address.
The server reports eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.45.200.2 to 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?
Currently I have my eth0 interface getting a DHCP address but at times the DHCP server will not be reachable. Sooo what I would like my server to do is if it cannot find a DHCP server assign a static address to eth0. Then start the DHCP service so it can then dish out some addresses.How can I do this? Surely it is possible
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an embedded device for which I've created an html configuration page. This page allows you to set static IPs, dhcp, and can scan for wireless devices.My problem is that in order to access the device it requires that it runs as a dhcp server otherwise people are not assigned an IP and so can not access the embedded devices static IP. (This config page is for the laymen and so they are not the type who are able to set up their own static IPs). One of the potential options is to have the device connect to the network on eth0 acting as a dhcp client. However this prevents me from running a dhcp server.One solution I can think of is running a dhcp server only if it doesn't detect another dhcp server running on the network.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm no expert on DHCP. My problem is that i have a CentOS 5.5 server on which i want to install a DHCP server. I have two NICs where eth0 has access to the internet and where eth1 should act as an DHCP server.
I have installed dhcpd and this is how my dhcpd.conf file looks like.
Code:
ifconfig looks like this
Code:
When i start dhcpd on eth1 i get no error messages but when i connect any devices to eth1 they don't get any IP. I cant find anything in any logs about devices trying to get an IP address. I dont have any firewall rules in iptables.
I'm trying to set up a PXE boot server on a PC running Slackware 13.0 using the default apps and info shipped with that Slackware version but to no avail...Carefully reading the Slackware 13.0 README_PXE I've put together this dhcpd.conf file:

How do you find out the ip addresses for:the Gateway
the DHCP server
the DNS server
Don't need to make any changes.
Which commands will display this info?
I have come across this option given below in dhcpd.conf file for DHCP Server configuration. Can any body let me know what this option is all about.Code:option T150 code 150 = string;
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to setup my server as a router/gateway just for educational purposes and also when it succeeded i will keep the gateway and place it on the front line right after my modem.
My current setup as it is now :
The GATEWAY/ROUTER will be doing the main work to act as a dhcp server and firewall.
Now my setup as it is now :
So now what i ment to do was :
Let the clients connect to the gateway via ETH1 and all the stuff being router to ETH0 which is the NIC that is connected to the internet.
But now i have two huge problems :
1. The DHCP configuration seems to be fine the client machines get their ip adresses and /etc/resolve.conf looks fine to. But somehow the GATEWAY/ROUTER wont let me use the specified external DNs server so i cant do anything on these machines.
2. The firewall script [url] at line 27 should be DROP but if i use this line of code the GATEWAY/ROUTER cannot use his dns server settings so when i try to browse the internet or ping a machine outside my local network it would came up with nothing.
\Actually i lost the login details of my server so im recovering it in rescue mode.what i want to ask here is if i restarted my server what i need to do in order to work as it was before.on my server samba and dhcp server is configured.will my client users can access there network if login page comes or i need to do something else such as restarting services or not.

Just looking for the best/most reliable setup. In a nutshell, I would love to have a Domain Controller no DHCP File server. I want to leave the DHCP to the router. I need virtual to run a software off from it. Samba server and that is basically it. My questions are:
1. Can I have a Domain Controller without DHCP server?
2. Should I run virtual server headless? so I dont install any gui?
3. This should have been my 1st question. I have two disks, is raid handled by the Bios or do I have to do something in linux(DMRAID)?
I have worked with many if not all the things I have mentioned here, however, I have never done it from scratch.
I have server which has "Xen/debian" installed. On this there is a virtual machine which has "Debian" installed. This virtual machine is used as a dhcp server for the network. Since yesterday, its not leasing any ip address! when i connect its ethernet cable to switch it says "eth0: received packet with its own address as IP address". the only thing that i remember (which might have caused the problem) is adding a mirror server(a different machine). The dhcp server gave it the address 192.168.1.1(the network is 192.168.1.0/24) and it was working fine. anyone knows how to solve the problem?

I am using VSFTPD. I want to restrict access from perticular range of IPs. Ex: 172.10.*.* How can i restrict access to server from a range of IPs?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to set up an FTP server for a client, which is something I haven't done before. Things seemed pretty straight forward at first, had everything working, but now I have just one last minor problem.
I'm using vsftpd as my FTP daemon. I managed to configure it to allow only user to log in, I have write enabled, etc. Now, this server is in the 172.16.10.* range. I have servers in two other ranges that need to connect to it and down-/upload files. These ranges are 192.168.15.* and 192.168.16.*. The ones in 192.168.15.* are physically in the same location as my FTP server. The ones on 192.168.16.* connect through a VPN, using a Netscreen 5GT firewall.
Up to this, no problem yet. The problem is this:
I tried the following from the 192.168.15.* range:
- connect: no problem
- login: no problem
- list directory: no problem
- download file: no problem
- upload file: no problem
Now I tried all of this from the 192.168.16.* range as well. Everything checked out except for one tiny crucial thing. I'm not allowed to upload files, I get "550 Requested action not permitted". I login under the same user I've verified I get the correct directory listing, so absolutely everything checks out to be the exact same.
As you can see on the output of the script, the two 'testing echoes' I do at the end don't print anything.That's the point, I do NEED this array further in my script.I'd understand my "param" var is local to the for, but is the other one too ? I tried to use "declare -a file" before the for, but i get same exact result !

View 9 Replies View RelatedI would like to set a double range of IP address with my DHCP3-server. Now, I have eth0 (which is my only network card) with this IP address : 172.16.93.1 and I have created a second interface eth0:1 with this address: 192.168.3.1. The goal is to give an IP address 172.16.93.X to phones (with option 66) and the IP address 192.168.3.X to the computers.
This is my DHCPD.conf :
ddns-update-style none;
option domain-name "mycompany.com";
option domain-name-servers 172.16.93.1;
default-lease-time 3600;
max-lease-time 2347200;
authoritative;
log-facility local7;
option ip-forwarding off;
default-lease-time 20;
max-lease-time 20; .....
Right now my DHCP server work fine, (I means, no error at the startup ) but the server give always the same kind of IP address, whatever if it's a phone or a computer. I notice something "wired", if I put the :
subnet 192.168.3.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.3.100 192.168.3.199;
option routers 192.168.3.254; }
(Which is first in the dhcpd.conf) after the "subnet 172.16.93.0 netmask 255.255.255.0", the server will give IP address 172.16.93.X at all the clients. Is it possible to give more than one IP range with one network card at the same time? And how set the option 66 to only give IP address (172.16.93.X) to the phones?
I am running Debian Squeeze with the following basic services running:DNS
DHCP
Samba
Squid
The server is setup with three NICs: eth0 (WAN1), eth1 (WAN2), and eth2 (LAN).The server addresses clients with an IP range of 10.0.30.1 - 10.0.30.254. Some clients will be set with reservations so they fall into the 10.0.40.1 - 254 range.
What I want to do is have any outgoing external traffic coming from the first range (10.0.30.0) to use WAN link 1, and any outgoing external traffic coming from the second range (10.0.40.0) to use WAN link 2.
I have sort of got something working. I have created a bare minimum transparent squid3 setup on port 3128, and set the iptables as follows:
Code:
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth2 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.0.1:3128
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 3128
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 3128
I can get internet access, however obviously it only goes through one WAN link. It also seems slower than it should be. I experimented with tcp_outgoing_address, but seemed to not be my friend.
I have a network with one of the server machine being under Fedora 14 and the clients machines being under Windows 7 and Fedora 14.
Quite often I get some difficulties for the clients to get an IP address from the dhcp server. If I look at the server logs, it looks like the server sees the requests and sends and answer:
Apr 12 19:33:18 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:21:70:c5:22:4e via eth1
Apr 12 19:33:18 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.28.52 to 00:21:70:c5:22:4e via eth1
