I installed CentOS 5.4 in a Virtualbox instance using the text mode installer. The GUI installer crashes. I chose the "Server (GUI)" option when installing the system, but upon completion of the install, I'm presented with a text mode login screen. Logging in as root drops me to a shell in text mode as I would expect.
What exactly IS "Server (GUI)?" I was thinking it would be a stripped down X11 desktop.
The main role of the Virtualbox instance is to run a server stack that we run on other CentOS machines, but I want Eclipse and perhaps just a few other GUI tools on it, without all the kitchen-sink crap that (I assume, coming from the Ubuntu world) comes with a "Desktop" install.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI run a custom build of linux running kernel 2.6.24 and busybox. At the moment I'm investigating a kernel panic. The problem is that after 10 minutes the screen is blanked, i.e. it is still on but has been turned black. If you press a key then the command prompt is shown once again, but if the kernel has crashed then this won't work and any info about the panic is inaccessible. So I'd like to prevent the display being blanked. I've tried booting with 'apm=off' and 'apm=off acpi=on' kernel parameters but neither had any effect.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup and configure a server entirely with text only run mode 3 on a virtual machine so I can redo my current live server. I'm now trying to set up the firewall of the system using iptables. I've read up on it and came up with the following:
-clear all rules
#iptables -F
-set default policy rules
#iptables --policy INPUT DROP
#iptables --policy FORWARD DROP

Everything above worked for me but just out of interest I looked at my live server which was configured using a GUI. I ran iptables-save and it was pretty much the same but its port open lines read like this:
#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
so finally my question is do I really need the "-m state --state NEW"? Wouldn't having that drop established connections on those ports? I'm just confused as to what exactly the NEW state is doing and would it make a difference if I didn't include it.

Ubuntu is running in low graphic mode. Your screen, graphic card and input device setting could not be detected correctly, you will need to configure these yourself
I have read that there is a file Xorg.conf that contain the graphics card information. I have also use the command
sudo cp /etc/x11/xorg.conf /etc/x11/xord.conf_backup
but its not working.
My girlfriend accidentally removed the power from the computer and now i cant boot up. I just get Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode and than:
0 run ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session
0 reconfigure graphics
0 troubleshoot error
0 exit to console
0 restart x
the only thing im able to do is boot up in terminal mode. i have tried google and found nothing that worked.

I've a popular vbulletin forum (10k max in vbulletin stats 'whos online') runnin in two servers like this:
1) Web server running vBulletin.
Dual Intel E5620 @ 2.40GHz (shows 16 cpus)
12 GB RAM
2 x 500 GB SATA (one for system/web and other for backups)
CentOS 5.6 64 bit
Apache/2.2.17
PHP 5.2.16
2) MySQL 5.server
Dual Intel E5620 @ 2.40GHz (shows 16 cpus)
16 GB RAM
2 x 500 GB SATA (one for system/web and other for backups)
CentOS 5.6 64 bit
MySQL 5.0.77
Web server connects to MySQL using private LAN.
Web-php server works with xcache as recommended by vBulletin.
Image/avatars and other static files (css, js, etc) are on a CDN
MySQL server uses Memcached for caching common queries.
The problem I'm facing, is from time to time (let's say one or two times a week) the Web server goes into read only mode... then the server has to be rebooted in order to get online normally and be able to work. From the logs I've seen this:

This is a new server, and in the old server the 'read only mode' issue happened very often too... so I guess it's not a HD issue.. it's just the HD have a heavy I/O usage. What do you think?
I am thinking about this solutions to improve the webserver performance:
1) 75% of the vbulletin users are anonymous users, so I've been thinking about using Cloudflare as a cache for all that traffic, that would reduce the php-webserver process a lot.
2) Using an external email server is a good option I guess... as right now the webservers also handles the email notifications for all the vbulletin users and it is constantly sending email everywhere. So, email will be stopped to gain server performance.
3) Mounting partitions with 'noatime' at /etc/fstab seems to improve I/O performance.

And after a long pause I get the answer:Data connection timed out.Falling back to PORT instead of PASV mode.I then get the listing and the connection continues in PORT mode. But not with FileZilla it just hangs. Also bit torrent no longer works. Set up is a home network of 6 machines reaching the internet through a linux firewall box, qwest DSL modem gt-701-gw. Nothing has changed but sometime in the last week something has changed because now FTP PASV and BIT TORRENT can no longer connect.

I installed Centos 5.4 on my Pentium E5300 new comp, but I need IPX support in my work. It's simple - ipxutils and ncpfs from Fedora Core and new kernel with ipx support. I copied kernel config from /boot folder and activate ipx, ntfs support, and choose processor core 2 duo. New kernel (2.6.26) works OK, but I got one problem - when start it still shows message: "kernel: HUB 1.0:1.0 unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 (or 2, 3)" and stops after logging (text mode)
I got 2 USB devices connected - printer HP D5160 PhotoSmart and Scanner A3 USB Mustek, and I know scanner cause that messages but I don't understand why. Kernel config is the same like that from distro kernel (almost - ipx, ntfs and proc), but distro kernel doesn't do that. So I got 2 questions:
