I'm going to use it via the internal file-based userlist.The problem is, when I yum install pure-ftpd from rpmforge or CentOS.Karan.Org, I also get mysql, perl-DBI and postgresql-libs as dependencies.Since I'm not intrested in DB-based authentication, I'd strongly prefer to skip these packages.Why are these listed as dependencies, since AFAIK, they are not really dependencies? Can I force yum to skip them somehow?

May 4, 2010I am attempting to configure vsftpd to allow anonymous users to PUT files into a shared incoming directory. This would be like a dropbox for my customers. Ideally, the incoming directory's contents would not be viewable by the users.
I believe that refused connection is due to the PAM configuration for vsftpd.

With the default config it works however when taken the comments out and edited for anonymous, proftpd fails to start
This is the default config file which works if you have a user and password for my machine, but anonymous wont work (when the comments were removed).

Mar 24, 2011I am having problems troubleshooting my pure-ftpd setup. I am always getting a 530 authentication error. I attempted to correct the problem by doing the following:
# pure-pw mkdb
# ln -s /etc/pure-ftpd/conf/PureDB /etc/pure-ftpd/auth/PureDB
# gedit /etc/pure-ftpd/conf/PAMAuthentication

This create a new error. 421 Unable to read the indexed puredb file (or old format detected) - Try pure-pw mkdb I am getting a feeling this is getting from bad to worse. I attempted to remove pure-ftpd and pureadmin to start over again. However, it appears I cannot remove everything. I attempted the following:
apt-get remove pure-ftpd pureadmin I am not sure what this really does because I can still see the folder /etc/pure-ftpd and I cannot remove it. I could not use rm /etc/pure-ftpd because the system said it was not empty. I also tried sudo aptitude remove pure-ftpd pureadmin . Again I cannot completely remove the folder. How do I completely remove pure-ftpd and pure admin and all databases, files and folders so I have a fresh system ready to start the install again?
Software :: Pure-authd Not Passing Variables To Pure-ftpd
Feb 9, 2011I have set up pure-authd and pure-ftpd. They are both running, I have created the socket etc.
In my authentication module (a php script) for testing purposes I have done a vardump in to a file, and have realised that pure-authd is not passing on any variables (username, password of the current person trying to log in via ftp) to the PHP script.
I am sure the authentication module is working (have tested it vigorously on the command line), but after 10 hours wondering why it wouldnt work and messing about with the script, I have realised that the variables were never even getting in to the script in the first place!
I am running the processes such as this:
Everything seems as if it is working other than this. For instance, when testing the setup with a very basic auth module which doesnt require a username or password (the basic module just passes "auth_ok:1" to pure-ftpd and the user is then logged in), I can log in to the FTP server fine.
But like I say, a vardump ($argv) on my proper PHP authentication script would suggest that no username or password are being passed to it.

Feb 24, 2011I'm trying to setup and configure a server entirely with text only run mode 3 on a virtual machine so I can redo my current live server. I'm now trying to set up the firewall of the system using iptables. I've read up on it and came up with the following:
-clear all rules
#iptables -F
-set default policy rules
#iptables --policy INPUT DROP
#iptables --policy FORWARD DROP

Everything above worked for me but just out of interest I looked at my live server which was configured using a GUI. I ran iptables-save and it was pretty much the same but its port open lines read like this:
#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
so finally my question is do I really need the "-m state --state NEW"? Wouldn't having that drop established connections on those ports? I'm just confused as to what exactly the NEW state is doing and would it make a difference if I didn't include it.
CentOS 5 Networking :: Can't Get Vsftpd To Accept Anything But Anonymous Connections
Jun 5, 2010This is on Centos 5.3 by the way..... I had a DVD and, well, just wanted to test some things.. I'm aware that this is not the latest release.
And, by the way (I just read an earlier post) I've added the username and password with which I'm trying to login (..hello?).
I'm at work and I don't have a copy of my Vsftpd configuration file (don't wanna edit this whole thing - actually there is a copy, below). I've used Slackware for years and never had any issues with Vsftpd - it just works. I am trying Centos because I need help with upgrading my mail server (qmail) and there's not much help for Slackware users. Also, I used to run RHEL3 and had vsftpd working fine (had to copy some file to /etc/pam.d) but it worked famously. I compiled all my web server stuff (just don't like these default things where I have no idea how things are integrated) and I'm hung up on - of all things - vsftpd.
Anyway....When I try to log into my ftp server I get "KERBEROS_V4 rejected as an authentication type" and only the anonymous account works. Any other logins produce an error (incorrect login - see ya' later). I have SE Linux and the firewall OFF. I don't recall the directive, precisely, but my vsftpd.conf file is set allow local users to connect. I installed with yum and it added some lines at the bottom (one was about a user list and the other was about PAM). I've got a chroot list and a user list although it's not clear to me precisely where the user list should be placed. I actually uninstalled the RPM and compiled, too. I've done everything but call an exorcist. And I've found tons of posts regarding this on the net and none of the fixes worked. Man - on slackware you type "make" and "make install" (I build it with tcp_wrappers) and you're off to the races.
Actually - I did upload the vsftpd.conf file to work (where I'm at, now). Minus lines that were commented out it looks like this:
Could it, possibly, be something about how I am adding the user, the shell type, etc? I know that in Redhat I used to type "/usr/sbin/useradd -d /home/someuser joe". I've done it that way and I've also done it like so: "useradd -d /home/schmoe -s /bin/bash schmoe".

Apr 20, 2011I have a test server (2.6.18-194.el5) that allows automated tools from Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 to access the filesystem (anonymous NFS access) via Samba (3.5.4-0.70.el5_6.1). Documentation on the smbusers file on samba.org seems a little thin.
* why is it necessary map unix users to samba users?
* what purpose does this mapping serve?
* does the umask of the unix user limit the samba user it is mapped to when creating files/directories? what about anonomous access?
* why are files created via anonymous access owned by 'nobody'?
* how can I control what user and permissions files/directories are created with?

Something that can be installed via "apt-get install xyzzy", where I can edit the /etc/xyzzy.conf file to point to the /home/ftp directory, and start/stop it with /etc/init.d/xyzzy start|stop|restart command.

My router automatically forwards a changed IP to my dyndns.com account so I can also access the server through a domain name (I pay to have it linked to one of my domains).My next step is to configure the mail server (dovecot) , so I can send emails from my local server(192.168.1.3).I was wondering if anyone has any tutorial links or tips to have the mail server configured through a home internet provider + home router.

Server :: Pure-FTPD - With-uploadscript On Fedora 10
Dec 16, 2009I am running an FTP server using Pure-FTPD which was a migration from an OS-X workstation to Fedora 10 - VMware esxi.
This was done for various reasons but the reason for choosing the Pure-FTPD app was due to an easier migration.
The system has been migrated for about a month and works very well. I installed it on the server using yum install pure-ftpd, configured it and imported all the accounts [about 150 accounts] so this is all fab. however we now want to see if we can get an upload notification.
This has lead me to look at the uploadscript option in pure-ftpd. we use virtual users and the pure-pw file.

The ftp server hangs, I cant seem to see how to get this to work, from my investigation I think the issue is that the yum install is not building the app " --with-uploadscript " i have tried to do a hand install on a test Fedora 10 VM, I downloaded pure-ftpd-1.0.27.tar.gz and unpacked it, did a ./configure --with uploadscript then a make and make install, nothing reports any errors but it doesnt seem to install anything. I can start the server from a command line but there are no config directories ? and even after creating a new user and a passwd-mkdb i cant log in to the server. but that most likely as i dont have a full configuration. but i can t find where to put the configuration files.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nautilus Connect To Server - FTP Anonymous User
Jan 20, 2010I'm trying to use Nautilus's connect to server to connect to an ftp server, but I'm having a problem. The username on the ftp server is "anonymous", but it requires a password. When Nautilus sees "anonymous" as the username it assumes it's dealing with a public ftp server and doesn't prompt for a password, and then, of course, I fail to connect.
I've tried modifying the .gtk-bookmarks file to account for this, but this leads to another problem. The password opens with a / and for whatever reason, this leads to Nautilus popping up an error: "Could not connect to ftp://anonymous:0/[rest of password]@[server]". It's adding a "0" to the beginning of my password for some reason. Is there any way to fix this without changing the password?

Apr 22, 2010I need by searching this site so I haven't had a need to sign up since I can't really help anyone as of yet. With that said here is my problem: I'm running a VPS with CentOS RHEL 5 host-in-a-box, I just did a rebuild of the server and after a day or two pure-ftpd and sshd unexpectedly close out any incoming connections. I am the only one that uses ssh and ftp so I'm not sure what the problem could be. I checked the logs and there is nothing to do with not being able to bind on the address.
I tried connecting through ssh in verbose mode and it connects to the server just fine, but drops the connection before it asks me for my key pass phrase. If I enable password access it will drop before it asks me for it's password. I've tried restarting sshd and ftpd. I've tried rebooting the machine. I've tried google, but this problem seems to need a little more specific trouble shooting. I can get in through console access, but that doesn't help me much when I need to transfer files.
