Fedora Installation :: 12 And X Startup Failed On Nvidia / Falling Back To Text Mode?

Feb 23, 2010

I have an older PC that was running F11 without any problems. At some point I started updating to F12 through the web and got a a nice black screen that pretty much hosed my OS. (Not a big deal). So I went and downloaded the F12 Live CD which did the same thing.., at some point just after install the screen would be black and reset is the only option.Got the full F12 32-bit DVD and during the installation I get: "X Startup Failed,Falling back to text mode."Finishing the install I get to a nice black log-in prompt so I can log-in as root. From there I cant do much as I am a n00d in Linux to some extent and my network doesn't work

My video card is a Geforce FX 5200 which installed and worked just fine under F11 (without me doing anything but basic install and Ubuntu 9.10)

Installation :: Fedora 9, 10, And Ubuntu 8.10 Freeze / "x Startup Fails To Load, Falling Back To Text Mode"?

Feb 16, 2009

just built a computer and wanted to try out some linux.

First off I burned the Fedora 10 x86_64 disk image (using disk utility on my mac at 4x speed then verified it) to a dvd. I start the install. "x startup fails to load, falling back to text mode" comes up. I use the text install then. It gets to the actual installation of the different packages then a black screen shows up with white text that's highlighted red (sometimes it's blue). It then freezes and I reboot. Sometimes it freezes at different points and with different messages, but the description above is what happens most often.

I try writing it at 1x speed and verifying. same thing.I try the Live CD. It freezes. Then I tried Fedora 9. same thing.

Next I go to Ubuntu 8.10.I try the regular install, but the orange loading bar freezes.I try the Live CD-like install. It runs!...but when i go to install, when it gets to the partitioning part, it freezes and becomes unresponsive.

Each time it froze I let it sit for about 10 minutes, just to make sure it is in fact frozen. I've tried these installs numerous times.

Fedora Installation :: Runs In Text Mode ?

Mar 4, 2009

It seems I had no say in the matter. The installer automatically did text mode and it starts up in text mode now. I'm very new to Fedora, though I had Ubuntu installed recently but removed it because Fedora seemed a little more interesting to me. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2807nr laptop if that helps.

Fedora Installation :: 11 Only Installs From 1st CD In Text Mode?

Aug 27, 2009

I tried installing Fedora 11 on my i386 using the 6 CD set that I downloaded. Since my system has only 128M of RAM, the text install mode was used. The 1st CD installation seemed to work OK. After 181 out of 181 packages were installed, the system rebooted and did not ask for me to insert the other CDs. now when my system comes up, it is always in text mode.

Q. Is there a command I can use to have the remaining CD's installed so I can install the graphics system?

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Hangs On Text Mode With Some Info

Jan 8, 2011

I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite C650D which has AMD processor. For some rescuing, I wanted to put ubuntu live CD. Ubuntu starts with some screen but then it converts to text mode and just sit there. I have checked md5sum of the iso file I got , before burning it on the CD. After burning the image, I also checked the directory structure on the iso file and the CD. They are fine. Currently I am writing this from XP. How do I use Ubuntu Live CD.

For burning, I used infrarecorder with 'Burn Image' option. I had installed debian and win xp with the same CD , so I can't see the problem with the CD. Anyway, I tried doing this with different CD and the same problem appears.
The CD's are memorex
CD-RW 700 MB 4X multi speed.
And I don't get the ubuntu boot screen at all. Some screen with ubuntu symbol appears and then text mode with some information about the hardware and it hangs there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen Installed Using Text Mode But Still Same

Jan 16, 2011

I'm some what new to ubuntu and i would really like to start using it as my main operating system and get rid of windows. The first problem i face here is that I am unable to install Ubuntu using the normal gui mode.As soon as i select the option to install ubuntu the files starts loading and then the screen goes blank.. but the monitor is still live. So i installed ubuntu using the text based installer.. everything went fine, i installed the system and at boot loader i selected my Os but still the old demon comes in "Blank screen". I've tried all the related forums and tried all the options best to my knowledge, but its still the same.. I am not even able to get a command prompt/terminal. I know that this is a problem with my ATI (i can hear the sighs!!!!!) video card. Now I know that Ubuntu is being loaded cause i can hear the welcome sound of Ubuntu(drums sound).

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Installer Crashes With Black Screen - Even In Text Mode

Oct 23, 2010

It has been a few days I'm struggling to install Kubuntu 10.10 on my computer. I started with the normal CD, burnt it and boot the computer. Halfway through the graphical installer, I got a black screen and system froze up. I tried several things (including running the installer with nomodest and single options) but didn't help.

Then I downloaded the alternate CD and started to install in the text mode. I could get passed installing the kernel and programs but right after adding a user/password, the text installer crashed with a black screen and system froze!

Now, I already have Windows 7 64 bits on this computer and have done all kinds of memory/hardware tests on it and it works fine. The CPU, GPU and the case is well ventilated so nothing is overheating. I also run heavy loads on Windows (MATLAB, Chess engine tournaments) for hours and hours and never had a crash. So I guess the hardware is fine.

Here are the specs of the system if it can help:

CPU: i7 950 GPU: ATI HD5870 (model Gigabyte GV-R587UD-1GD) RAM: 12 GB DDR-1666 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) Optical drive: Liteon ihbs112 USB Mouse and Keyboard

Windows is installed on a SSD and I have 2x 2.0TB hard disks for data. Kubunto, however was being installed on a separate and dedicated 200GB hard disk. During installation process I format and partition this drive. I didn't disconnect/disable the other drives. In BIOS, all SATA controllers are set to run in AHCI mode.

My primary suspect is the graphics card. However, why it would ever crash even in the text mode? Although it works fine in Windows even with heavy gaming so graphics card is itself stable.

Fedora Installation :: Too Many Installed Packages In Text Mode Install?

Jan 23, 2009

On some computers I can not use graphical installation interface of Fedora 9. So I use text mode.I would like to have a very small installation with very few installed packages, so at package selection I uncheck everything. In text mode installation there is no option to customize installed packages down to package names. I can only check main themes. So I uncheck everything and installation starts. This method results over 400 packages to bo installed... This is too much with many unnecessary packages. If I use graphical interface and uncheck every package name at custom package selection then about 150 packages will be installed. Is there any good way to use textmode installation and don't install more than 400 packages?

Ubuntu Installation :: Get Kubuntu Boot Screen At Startup - Low Graphics Mode By Default

Jul 19, 2010

I wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.

Ubuntu Installation :: Ubuntu 10.10 Boots In Text-only Mode After Update

Dec 15, 2010

I originally installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my old 32bit Pentium Hp/Compaq dc7100 business desktop, which also has Windows XP installed. It worked fine with the gnome interface, showing the desktop on boot. Over the past year, I used the built in update manager to update the system and apps to 10.04, then 10.10, and a couple of days ago to further 10.10 updates.Last time I booted, it performed a disk check, then booted to a text-mode login-prompt, like on the old UNIX systems before the X gui system got developed.

I have no clue how to launch gnome or x11 and get my desktop back. I don't have the knowledge (or patience) to operate Linux from a command prompt in text-only mode. Will someone tell me how to get UBUNTU 10.10 to launch x11 gnome and show my desktop?I remember having the same problem when I first updated to 10.10, but I don't recall what I did to get the desktop to appear on the display.

Ubuntu :: Plymouth Usually Boots In Low Res Text Mode?

Jul 5, 2010

Most of the time instead of a pretty graphical splash I'm getting a small low res text version of the boot screen squeezed into the top left hand corner of my display on my laptop with Intel GMA4500 graphics.

Originally I was getting a blank screen with the Plymouth splash only appearing a couple of seconds before log-in. Adding FRAMEBUFFER=y to /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash got rid of the blank screen but at the expense of the ugly boot screen mentioned above. To confuse matters, now and again (roughly 1 boot out of 10) I am getting a perfect graphical boot. I've tried reinstalling Plymouth and using different boot themes but to no avail.
