To force myself to use CLI all the time, I've installed Ubuntu Server edition on my work laptop. However, I still want to be able to view PDF ( rendered as normal PDF, not converted to text ). Basically I want a totally CLI environment, except for PDF viewer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEverytime I open Konqueror, it opens in "Embedded Text Editor" mode . So if I open it then click on a bookmark, it opens in edit mode. I can select View->View Mode->khtml and then the page displays properly. If I click on a link from that page, it displays properly. If I open a new tab, it is back to edit mode. If I open konqueror from konsole, it has the same behavior. I have removed all files under ~/.kde that mention konqueror, kong_* or kfmclient.
I checked the menu entry for Konqueror, and it is "kfmclient openProfile web browsing". I have set the view mode properly, then manually saved the profile in Konqueror. I have checked the system settings file associations, and the konqueror entry has the same application command (kfmclient) as the kde menu entry. Does anyone know how to make the view mode "stick" for Konqueror such that when clicking on html urls or selecting bookmarks causes Konqueror to display properly?

The system always boot up in Graphic Mode. After installation of Web Server, I want to disable Graphic Mode and change it to boot to Text Mode to save memory. Is there a way to disable graphic mode?

/usr/local/bin/ps2pdfwr "$PSFILE" "$PDFFILE"
All the pdf files created this way seem to be empty, i.e. no text is rendered by Adobe Reader on the display, if the original document only contains TimesNewRoman font. However, if the document also contains any other font (e.g. Arial), then the whole document will be converted correctly, including TimesNewRoman, and also the other font(s).
In both cases, the following font is in the pdf:
Type: Type 1
Encoding: Custom
Actual Font: TimesNewRomanPSMT
Actual Font Type: True Type
For the time being, I have not found a way to create pdfs that are correct in all respect by ghostscript.

I installed ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso hoping I would get the Unity User Interface, but to my dissapointment I got the regular one.
I checked the user settings and 'Netbook Edition' is selected as my default view.
What can I do to get the Unity Interface?
I run a custom build of linux running kernel 2.6.24 and busybox. At the moment I'm investigating a kernel panic. The problem is that after 10 minutes the screen is blanked, i.e. it is still on but has been turned black. If you press a key then the command prompt is shown once again, but if the kernel has crashed then this won't work and any info about the panic is inaccessible. So I'd like to prevent the display being blanked. I've tried booting with 'apm=off' and 'apm=off acpi=on' kernel parameters but neither had any effect.
View 5 Replies View Relatedim currently using a RHEL5 RIS server in my Lab to deploy rhel5 for all my systems. everything has been configured and installation works fine, but i am not able to run the installation in text interface mode. when i type "linux text", i get an error saying invalid kernel parameter. i'll paste my /etc/dhcpd.conf file here. please have a look and let me know what changes i should be making in order for my text interface installation to be working.

Is there simple way to change to 25x80 or something with greater letters. View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup and configure a server entirely with text only run mode 3 on a virtual machine so I can redo my current live server. I'm now trying to set up the firewall of the system using iptables. I've read up on it and came up with the following:
-clear all rules
#iptables -F
-set default policy rules
#iptables --policy INPUT DROP
#iptables --policy FORWARD DROP
[Code]....
Everything above worked for me but just out of interest I looked at my live server which was configured using a GUI. I ran iptables-save and it was pretty much the same but its port open lines read like this:
#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
so finally my question is do I really need the "-m state --state NEW"? Wouldn't having that drop established connections on those ports? I'm just confused as to what exactly the NEW state is doing and would it make a difference if I didn't include it.

I have it setup where I can watch it on my TV, but my hard drive is getting full because of size and quantity of AVI files. What I would like to do is make a file server to house all of these movies, but I have a couple of P4 2.0GHZ processor and couple 160GB Hard Drives. I would like to know if I can combine multiple computers and create a cluster or private cloud, combine the hard drive and processor power and set it up that way...in a sense a massive powerful file server. I am thinking of expanding this to include my word documents and pictures as well.

And by "text console" I mean that thing that you get on ctrl+alt+F[1-6], which is what you get whenever X11 is not running. And, no, I'm not using any framebuffer console (it's a plain, good and old 80x25 text-mode). Many years ago, I was using Slackware Linux, and it used to boot up in text-mode. Then you would manually run startx after the login. Anyway, the main login "screen" was the plain text-mode console, and I remember that the monitor used to turn off (energy saving mode, indicated by a blinking LED) after some time. Now I'm using Gentoo, and I have a similar setup.
The machine boots up in text-mode, and only rarely I need to run startx. I say this because this is mostly my personal Linux server, and there is no need to keep X11 running all the time. (which means: I don't want to use GDM/KDM or any other graphical login screen). But now, in this Gentoo text-mode console, the screen goes black after a while, but the monitor does not enter any energy-saving mode (the LED is always lit). Yes, I've waited long enough to verify this. Thus, my question is: how can I configure my current system to behave like the old one? In other words, how to make the text console trigger energy-saving mode of the monitor?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently built a basic server computer for home use. (this will be for media, documents, music, etc) I have a basic amd mobo, cpu, and dvd drive. I have Ubuntu server 9.10 installed on an 8GB SD card that is attached to a usb dongle. The os loaded just fine And as a storage drive i have a seagate 1TB hard drive.
Then i got to creating shares in samba. I got to editing the smb.conf file and i couldn't figure out how to setup the shares (where exactly the 1tb Hard drive is, how to create directories and what not) Then i realized i needed to format the HDD! but when i go to run fdisk to finally do it, it tells me that it is "unable to open /dev/sda/"
Now i don't know a whole lot about linux as you can tell, but that is the whole reason i set this thing up is for a big learning experience in both linux and network setup.
To sum up, how do i format the 1TB HDD, and how would i set up samba so i could administrate it from my other computer (SWAT is what i've read about)

I chose the "Server (GUI)" option when installing the system, but upon completion of the install, I'm presented with a text mode login screen. Logging in as root drops me to a shell in text mode as I would expect.
What exactly IS "Server (GUI)?" I was thinking it would be a stripped down X11 desktop.
The main role of the Virtualbox instance is to run a server stack that we run on other CentOS machines, but I want Eclipse and perhaps just a few other GUI tools on it, without all the kitchen-sink crap that (I assume, coming from the Ubuntu world) comes with a "Desktop" install.
