Ubuntu Servers :: How To Get To Text Mode Partition Editor From Installer

Jan 19, 2010

We're planning on running some performance tests on various LVM and straight disk configurations before we settle on one to use for our live servers, but while I can setup LVM volumes and partitions till the cows come home using the text mode GUI that's part of the Server Edition installer, I tend to get very confused trying to do the same from the command line. So, is there any way to get to that text mode GUI from the installer after the system has been installed? I know there are various tools to do the job within Gnome etc, but we're trying to keep the system as unbloated as possible.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mail Server For 400 Small Domains - Which One To Use?

Sep 1, 2011

I am going to try and replace our crappy Windows/imail server with a new ubuntu 10.04 LTS based machine. It will end up with about 400 domains on it with around 3000 users total. 96% of the domains have very light use. 4% of the domains have heavy use but do not send any bulk mail.

Can someone here recommend a mail server software package that would be easy to administrate and easy to backup/replicate? All we need is POP with webmail. We do not need IMAP or want any group/collaborative functions.

What do you usually use for anti-spam on a linux mail server? We want to keep it all open source if possible.

For hardware we are looking at an HP DL360 G5 with dual Xeons, 4G of ram, and the P400 controller with 6 SAS 15k drives. Do you think a server like this will be able to handle the mail on linux? Volume is around 400k messages a day inbound with about 10% being legit/90% being spam. The server will be dedicated to mail hosting and will not host websites.

Server :: Disable Console Blanking In Text Mode?

Jan 6, 2010

I run a custom build of linux running kernel 2.6.24 and busybox. At the moment I'm investigating a kernel panic. The problem is that after 10 minutes the screen is blanked, i.e. it is still on but has been turned black. If you press a key then the command prompt is shown once again, but if the kernel has crashed then this won't work and any info about the panic is inaccessible. So I'd like to prevent the display being blanked. I've tried booting with 'apm=off' and 'apm=off acpi=on' kernel parameters but neither had any effect.

Software :: Firefox - Text Boxes Automatically Highlighting Letters

Jul 11, 2010

I'm having a strange problem with Firefox. I like to tab through text boxes rather than clicking on each one. Problem is, I don't really know if it has anything to do with the tabbing honestly, but I'll type in the box I'll get one letter than it will highlight it all on its own and then obviously get replaced with the next letter I type. I can type one letter, press the forward arrow and type another letter then it automatically highlights the 2 letters, etc etc. I'm really not even sure how to stop it, I try clicking in the box and they doesn't seem to do anything. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with firefox 3.6.6.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Setup And Configure A Server Entirely With Text Only Run Mode 3 On A Virtual Machine

Feb 24, 2011

I'm trying to setup and configure a server entirely with text only run mode 3 on a virtual machine so I can redo my current live server. I'm now trying to set up the firewall of the system using iptables. I've read up on it and came up with the following:

-clear all rules
#iptables -F
-set default policy rules
#iptables --policy INPUT DROP
#iptables --policy FORWARD DROP

[Code]....

Everything above worked for me but just out of interest I looked at my live server which was configured using a GUI. I ran iptables-save and it was pretty much the same but its port open lines read like this:

#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

so finally my question is do I really need the "-m state --state NEW"? Wouldn't having that drop established connections on those ports? I'm just confused as to what exactly the NEW state is doing and would it make a difference if I didn't include it.

Ubuntu :: Icon And Text Too Small @ 1920x1080?

I just bought a new laptop with 1920x1080 resolution. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 via "wubi" just now, however everything in ubuntu is too small to keep my eye comfortable. I searched the web and forum and tried to enlarge those, but the solution was about Ubuntu front and folder icon only (change in "appreance", and "edit->preference"). The front and icon are still small in other applications, such as Google chrome, firefox. Note: the change of front size in chrome and firefox only changes those on the page, but not page background, not the size in tab and anything else.

Ubuntu :: Simple Small Text Editor 3 Features

Mar 7, 2010

I am looking for an editor to fill a specific request for a mostly non-computer person. He uses a computer to write manuals and other books for classes he teaches. He has come to ubuntu so he can more easily access updates, gimp, etc. than he felt he could in Windows.

1) I need a text editor that can be kept open without bogging things down, or can be loaded fast enough to make him think it is "TSR" (made usable in either case by a keypress on his MS internet antique keyboard)

2) Spell check as you type with editable dictionary (he can add words that will no longer show as incorrect). Ability to select spelling suggestions easily (left click a misspelled word is his current method).

3) Ability to highlight words that most of us would call syntax highlighting but for words having NOTHING to do with a programming language etc. I would call it ability to edit the keyword file(s) to make his own languages to be highlighted.

Already rejected:
* anything with millions of complex keys to @#%$^%#$ remember that don't make sense
* gedit
* geany
* kate
* openoffice
* treeline (though he does use it for other things)
* tomboy (the cuss words there are an art form)
* anything emacs/vi or similar (see #1 reject reason at top)
* some gtk-nano clone he has no idea where he found

Ubuntu :: How To Launch Text Editor With Small Windows Size?

Apr 20, 2010

I'm looking for a programmable way to open an editor with a small window size. For example 60 columns and 3 lines. So I need an editor that can take its initial window size from command line args or environment variables, or possibly from an initial command that can be given on the command line.I've looked at documentation and experimented with gedit, gvim (and vi & vim), and nano and I don't think any of them can be controlled this way. Vi and its friends have a "window" option and also a "resize" command, both of which are described as setting the number of rows, but they don't change the graphical window size they just change the number of rows displayed in the window.

Ubuntu Servers :: Server Only Recognizes NIC In Rescue Mode?

Jun 10, 2010

my HP Pavilion a335w on board NIC stopped working. I've tried putting in another NIC in the PCI slots #1 & 2 of the three available and the system does not pickup the card. I thought it was because it was an old 3com 3c905b and was not supported.I took the box to Best Buy and purchased a new Linksys card and had them install it.The Geek Squad told me that the Motherboard was bad, no charge.I took it to a refurbishing store and the very patient gentlemen tried to get a Netgear FA310TX card to be recognized with no luck.I took the Netgear FA310TX card home and put in slot #3 and booted up with the install disk. In Rescue Mode it recognizes the NIC and gets an IP address from the router. If I boot up normally without the install disk, then it does not recognize the NIC.

General :: Debian - Gnome - Metacity - Fglrx - Text Too Small

Sep 7, 2010

I am running Debian Lenny with Gnome and Metacity, and I've just installed the fglrx driver for my ATI card. I am running at a humble 1024x768 resolution, but I can barely read the text in many applications and on the desktop itself. Some programs are better than others, but for example, Icedove/Tbird's text is extremely small.

I encountered this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...aviour-569624/ but wasn't sure if it was up to date or not.

I'm sure this topic has been covered plenty of times, but I'm new to setting up X/Window Manager/Desktop on Debian, and am not sure how to proceed. I've been using Linux for a couple of years but am relatively new to Debian (I started on Ubuntu - hence the being stumped by something like this).

CentOS 5 :: Installed "Server - GUI" - Got Text Mode Login Prompt

Apr 29, 2010

I installed CentOS 5.4 in a Virtualbox instance using the text mode installer. The GUI installer crashes. I chose the "Server (GUI)" option when installing the system, but upon completion of the install, I'm presented with a text mode login screen. Logging in as root drops me to a shell in text mode as I would expect.

What exactly IS "Server (GUI)?" I was thinking it would be a stripped down X11 desktop.

The main role of the Virtualbox instance is to run a server stack that we run on other CentOS machines, but I want Eclipse and perhaps just a few other GUI tools on it, without all the kitchen-sink crap that (I assume, coming from the Ubuntu world) comes with a "Desktop" install.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup An OpenVPN Server In Bridged Mode?

Jan 17, 2011

I am trying to setup an OpenVPN server in bridged mode (Ubuntu 10.04 Lts). The goal is for the clients to be able to reach all the servers behind Openvpn server's lan. I have followed the official OpenVPN guide for Ubuntu 10.04.

My network setup is:

Private lan: 10.90.90.0-255 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.90.90.1
Openvpn server ip: 10.90.90.8
Gateway public ip: 79.xxxxxxxxx

I have forward port 1195 to the Vpn server through my gateway firewall.Besides that no other firewall is running.I can connect and ping the server both from windows and ubuntu clients. The difference is that from windows I can reach the private lan but not from ubuntu clients.

Ubuntu Servers :: Lock The Drive Letters To Certain Drives At Boot?

Jul 24, 2011

Is there any somewhat straightforward way of lock the drive letters to certain drives at boot?

I have searched a lot on this and the only thing that have come up is a rather long and complicated way using scripts etc.

A simple fstab example on how to make an uuid to boot at say sda1 everytime and not like now totally random even though I have the same drives in the same places with no portable devices and only a std setup with /boot, /, /home, /swap. +some storage drives.

This uuid creates a havoc on my Truecrypt favorites mounting that relies on labels.

If this is not possible how far back do I have to go get rid of uuid?

I know that 10.04 LTS was working fine at first, is it in the kernel version that it is decided?

Ubuntu Servers :: New Server Installation Puts Monitor In Standby Mode?

Apr 13, 2010

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 server edition (twice, just to be sure) and the installation ran fine, but when I try to boot into the system, i get past the BIOS loading screen then my monitor just goes into power saving mode and I can't get it to see a signal from the PC. I know the OS is running, because I can ssh into it from my laptop, and I know the monitor works, because that machine had a windows OS on it before and that worked fine with the same monitor. I had thought it might be a graphics card thing with ubuntu trying to push out at a resolution not supported by the monitor, but I find that unlikely as it's brand new this month. If anyone has any idea of something I can try to diagnose the problem, that would be great. As I said, I still have ssh access to the PC, so I can basically try anything on it that I could if I was physically at the box itself.
