Apr 30, 2011When I try to load Ubuntu (recovery mode) or if I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, the image gets corrupted showing a white screen with black writing on it, but which is unreadable. Also the words seem to be spelled backwards. I'm trying to install an NVIDIA driver and I need to stop first the X server.

Jan 6, 2010I run a custom build of linux running kernel 2.6.24 and busybox. At the moment I'm investigating a kernel panic. The problem is that after 10 minutes the screen is blanked, i.e. it is still on but has been turned black. If you press a key then the command prompt is shown once again, but if the kernel has crashed then this won't work and any info about the panic is inaccessible. So I'd like to prevent the display being blanked. I've tried booting with 'apm=off' and 'apm=off acpi=on' kernel parameters but neither had any effect.

Nov 3, 2010How to configure Linux text console to automatically turn of the monitor after some time? And by "text console" I mean that thing that you get on ctrl+alt+F[1-6], which is what you get whenever X11 is not running. And, no, I'm not using any framebuffer console (it's a plain, good and old 80x25 text-mode). Many years ago, I was using Slackware Linux, and it used to boot up in text-mode. Then you would manually run startx after the login. Anyway, the main login "screen" was the plain text-mode console, and I remember that the monitor used to turn off (energy saving mode, indicated by a blinking LED) after some time. Now I'm using Gentoo, and I have a similar setup.
The machine boots up in text-mode, and only rarely I need to run startx. I say this because this is mostly my personal Linux server, and there is no need to keep X11 running all the time. (which means: I don't want to use GDM/KDM or any other graphical login screen). But now, in this Gentoo text-mode console, the screen goes black after a while, but the monitor does not enter any energy-saving mode (the LED is always lit). Yes, I've waited long enough to verify this. Thus, my question is: how can I configure my current system to behave like the old one? In other words, how to make the text console trigger energy-saving mode of the monitor?

CentOS 5 :: Graphics Card Can't Work After The System Resume From 'suspend' Mode
May 18, 2009My computer have ATI X600 graphics card installed, and I installed CentOS5.3.
Every time I suspend my computer and then resume it, it seem the graphics card can't resume and the monitor says 'no signal', but the system still responses, I can use keyboard.
Is there any configuration I can't do to make it resume normally? I've searched a lot in Google but can't find out any one else run into the same problem.

I chose the "Server (GUI)" option when installing the system, but upon completion of the install, I'm presented with a text mode login screen. Logging in as root drops me to a shell in text mode as I would expect.
What exactly IS "Server (GUI)?" I was thinking it would be a stripped down X11 desktop.
The main role of the Virtualbox instance is to run a server stack that we run on other CentOS machines, but I want Eclipse and perhaps just a few other GUI tools on it, without all the kitchen-sink crap that (I assume, coming from the Ubuntu world) comes with a "Desktop" install.

I can see no reason why centos-relese-notes should depend on centos-release when I try "yum erase centos-release-notes" I am told there are 72 dependancies including completely irrelevant packages such as tar all because of this unnecessary dependancy.
The centos-release-notes package simply contains a bunch of text/html files that nothing else relies upon, so why the dependancies ?

Fedora :: No Monitor Input During Boot, Unable To Enter Text Mode From X Window
Nov 24, 2009I installed Fedora 11 on my system (see below) using the i686 DVD. The graphical install worked just fine, and after the system booted back up, the X server was working very well.
There is no boot text. On the other system with Fedora 11, I can see the boot text scroll by in the window and/or a progress bar at the bottom of the monitor during the boot sequence. On this system, the monitor says "No Input", and nothing appears until the login prompt for the X window. I am able to enter the BIOS configuration page and navigate through it without any issues. I can also edit the grub commands before Fedora loads without a problem.
If I boot in text mode, no login prompt appears. If I wait long enough, the monitor enters the power save mode since it is not receiving a signal. I am able to log in to the system with my user name and password, and then start the X server. Once the server starts, the monitor turns back ON and all is well.
From the X window, I use the CTL+ALT+F2 key to enter text mode. The monitor stops responding. If I press the ENTER key a couple of times, then press ALT+F7, I can briefly see the text window with a couple of login prompts before the X window starts responding again.
How can I get the text mode to work? Why is there no input to the monitor when booting?

Mar 22, 2010I installed Centos 5.4 on my Pentium E5300 new comp, but I need IPX support in my work. It's simple - ipxutils and ncpfs from Fedora Core and new kernel with ipx support. I copied kernel config from /boot folder and activate ipx, ntfs support, and choose processor core 2 duo. New kernel (2.6.26) works OK, but I got one problem - when start it still shows message: "kernel: HUB 1.0:1.0 unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 (or 2, 3)" and stops after logging (text mode)
I got 2 USB devices connected - printer HP D5160 PhotoSmart and Scanner A3 USB Mustek, and I know scanner cause that messages but I don't understand why. Kernel config is the same like that from distro kernel (almost - ipx, ntfs and proc), but distro kernel doesn't do that. So I got 2 questions:
1. Why

I changed the default setting in /etc/inittab but when changed it logs on to text mode and i could not get GUI mode when Ctrl+alt+f7 is pressed.

Jan 27, 2009I have a Centos 5.2 VM running under Windows 2008 Hyper-V. If I add two "legacy Nic's" and bridge them, everything appears to work fine. However, if I remove the legacy nics and replace them with two synthetic nics (linux integration components), the nics seems to function fine UNTIL I add them to a bridge.This VM will eventually be used as a DansGuardian/Squid transparent proxy for a local library. The logical layout is represented by the attached jpg image. I have also included the ifcfg- scripts for the adapters and bridge for both scenarios.It would also be useful if someone else has Hyper-V with the integration components and dual physical nics to see if they can reproduce my symptoms on their box.Legacy Adapters:
