Ubuntu Installation :: Safe To Install On External Hard Drive?

Feb 20, 2011

my problem here in not 'how to install ubuntu on an external HDD' but the thing is that after installation,i play around a bit in ubuntu(install on my external HDD). ok,so the external HDD is connected through usb. My problem is ,is it safe to install ubuntu on it? As i am using an external HDD from : Western Digital Element 500GB, so when i shutdown ubuntu ,i hear(from the external HDD) a sound like a sudden stop, for example, when you are playing a movie from it then ,you just unplug it.It not the sound when you make a safe remove, then unplug it. i am worried as it may cause some problem to my external HDD over time. So ,tell me,do you think i can go on with this?

General :: Can't Start The Box Unless External Hard Drive Attached

Jul 21, 2010

I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto an external hard drive connected by USB to my laptop:

sdd partition
Windoze still resides on the box's internal hard drive:
sda2 partition

I also partitioned the internal hard drive so that I have a repository where my documents etc can be accessed by either linux or windoze:
sda3 partition (FAT32) I'm assuming that Grub is on the external drive somewhere - as is probably now the Windoze MBR. I'd like to be able to give my wife the ability to start the box (and boot into Windoze) when the external drive is not attached (so that she doesn't have to take the latter with her when she needs to be mobile with the computer). What do I need to do to move grub and the MBR back onto the laptop's internal drive? Or, I suppose: What do I need to do to obtain the functionality that I'm looking for? I'm getting somewhat more comfortable with the command line but, I still need a bit of hand-holding

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Start Computer Without External Hard Drive Plugged In

Jan 12, 2010

I finally got my new internal hdd for my laptop. I plugged it in and installed windows 7 64 bit. Then I partitioned my external hdd (WD mybook 640gb), and installed ubuntu 9.1 on a 200gb partition of it. The problem is that I didn't unplug the internal hdd before I installed ubuntu. Now the computer will not start unless I have the external hard drive plugged in.

So what should I do so that I will be able to go into windows 7 normally if the external hdd is unplugged? I would also like to be able to use ubuntu when I plug in the external hdd. I wouldn't mind having to go to the boot menu and choosing the external hard drive every time I wanted to use ubuntu.

The reason I partitioned the external hard drive was because it has a lot more space than my 250gb internal hdd, and I also wanted to leave space open to use as was intended, to back up stuff.

However, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind partitioning the internal hdd and just leaving the external blank (which I should have done in the first place).

Ubuntu Installation :: Using SD Card As Substitute For Hard Drive Safe?

Apr 25, 2011

Have you ever used an SD card as a substitute for a hard drive? The target machine is an MSI "nettop," more or less equivalent to a couple of netbooks glued together. It has dual Atom CPUs, 2 GB RAM, an optical drive, and a bunch of other ports and connectors not usually found on netbooks but standard on a desktop machine (thus the "nettop" moniker). So this is no powerhouse computer, but Ubuntu should run decently on it.

That's the thing: the machine has no hard drive. Instead, it has an 8 GB SDHC card. While the card is a "Class 10," and therefore well above average for an SD card, it's proving to be a poor substitute for a real hard drive. I'm working on the machine for a friend, and I think I'm going to have to recommend he spring for a new SATA HDD. Installing Ubuntu 10.04 from a CD-ROM to the SDHC card took forever. At least there was ample space (just try cramming Windows 7 into 8 GB!).

Similarly, the first round of updates took almost all day to install. The system is very sluggish in general, more so than is normal for a netbook-class machine, based on my experience with Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire One D150. I suspect that the basic problem is the glacial speed of the SDHC card compared to a SATA hard drive. Although the SDHC card is rated for 20 MB/s reads, that's nowhere near even a slow SATA hard disk.

Write speed is likely a lot slower even than that, which perhaps explains the hours and hours required to install Ubuntu + updates. It seems as if launching apps is slow as well - again, probably a symptom of the SDHC card's sluggish reads, compared to a SATA HDD. Are there any secret tricks to make running Ubuntu off an SDHC card more bearable? Or should I just tell my friend he needs to buy a regular HDD?

Fedora :: 'safe' Is It To Repartition Shared Hard Drive?

Nov 1, 2009

Initially when I shrunk my NTFS Windows partition to install Fedora 11 I underestimated how much space I'd need for Fedora. Now that I'm using it as my primary operating system I have wasted space in the form of spare space on my NTFS partition. I was just wandering how safe it is to shrink this partition and move the free space to my /home partition using gparted on Linux? This would probably involve having to shift things towards the beginning of the drive as the Windows partition is at the beginning and the /home directory is at the end. Would I need to use a LiveCD to do this since it's meddling with an active operating system? I know I should back up the data, but is it quite safe to do it despite gparted in all likelihood having to move data from block to block across the drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On External Hard Drive Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: After Formatting External Hard Drive?

Feb 1, 2010

I have a 250GB external hard drive that I want to format to ext4. It will be used to store back ups of my documents, music and pictures. I tried booting the Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD (amd64) and using gparted to delete the partitions that where on the hard drive leaving only unallocated space, then creating one new partition that was ext4. I clicked apply and after a short time it said all operations completed successfully.

Now the problem is it won't let me transfer any documents onto the hard drive, or even create a folder or file. If I go into the properties of the hard drive, under the permissions tab it says I am not the owner...?

Ubuntu :: Can't Unmount External Hard Drive

Jun 17, 2010

I have an external hard drive which connects to a usb port. until recently i could unmount it by right clicking on the desktop icon and selecting unmount. now when i try that it tells me that i can't because the device is not in fstab and i am not the root. i checked mtab and it had this line '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos rw,noexec, nodev, nosuid 0 0' i changed that to '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec, nodev, nosuid 0 0' thinking that would fix it, but it didn't. i unmounted using 'sudo umount /media/usb0' and restarted my computer and now the line in mtab reads '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 vfat rw,noexec, nodev, sync, noatime, nodiratime 0 0' and i still can't unmount without using the sudo umount command. i also tried adding '/dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 msdos user,rw,noexec, nodev, nosuid 0 0' to fstab and that didn't help

Ubuntu :: Fwbackups With External Hard Drive?

Aug 2, 2010

I want to backup my documents, using Fwbackups, on an external hard drive (a LaCie Ethernet Disk mini). But I can't seem to access that drive from FWbackups. As a first test, I tried a One-time backup (to backup some of my personal folders).Using Nautilus file manager, I access the external hard drive simply by going to Network, then to "Edmini FTP" or to "EDmini SMB". But when I need to pick a destination folder in Fwbackups, I can't seem to find the external hard drive. I tried "local folder", then Browse, but Network doesn't appear.

(Can I find it somewhere else?)I tried "local folder", then copy pasted the location from Nautilus [URL] but that didn't work - I get the red button, and when I do try the backup, I get "ERROR : The destination folder [URL] could not be created: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: [URL] So how do I choose my external hard drive as destination ?
