Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 External Hard Drive - Fails And I Get A Grub Rescue
Feb 8, 2010I've tried to be clever but as usual I didn't think before acting and missed a small detail.
I have recently installed karmic (dual booting with Vista) on my dell xps laptop. The install went fine, I'm very happy with my new OS.
I bought a new Seagate 500GB portable external HDD. I got a bit over-excited and installed karmic on the external drive. This worked fine and I got a lovely (but slow to appear) Grub2 menu showing my vista and both ubuntu options.
My problem is that now, when I unplug the external drive, Grub fails and I get a grub rescue> prompt. So I need the external drive to be plugged in if I want to boot.
It seems I have done something to the grub configuration. I have read around the subject but I am not confident about how best to proceed.
I understand there is an 'advanced' option in the installer which will allow me to choose where to install grub. Presumably I want it on the internal drive so that I can boot without the external one plugged in.
Am I right in thinking I can just pop in my install disk and redo the installation?
If I indicate I want to install Grub on the internal drive, which partition should I aim for?
Will I get a grub option for booting to the external drive?
Will I be able to plug the external drive into a different machine and boot from it?
I haven't done anything with the fresh install on the external drive so I don't mind losing that.

Sep 25, 2010I was trying to install Fedora to dual boot with Vista in the middle it said that the installation failed and now it will not run grub to let me choose between Windows and Mint which I had installed. All that happens is it shows a command line and says "grub rescue>"

Jan 6, 2010I accidentally deleted the linux mint 8 that was on there due to a small issue discussed on another thread(long story followed by a stupid mistake). after then i reinstalled linux using the .iso i found on the website. all is well. I boot up linux on the external and it runs great. then i turn off the laptop and try to plug it into another laptop( which i used the external hard drive on before and worked) and it went through the bios screen but then after slight lag(5 seconds longer then usual) the blinking cursor in the top left corner would not display anything, anything meaning "booting GRUB" or any other signs of activity. after waiting some time i quit and tried it back on the other laptop, which it was just working on, only to get the same result. I am confused about why it would work the first go around but nothing past that.
The only thing i altered on the external after i installed linux was that i put my home directory into it( from another version of linux mint)
Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Failure?
Feb 11, 2010I've been running Karmic happily for several weeks now. Today when I came home from work I was greeted by a notification informing me that me external hard drive may be failing due to the fact that it has many bad sectors. I am disinclined to believe this, due to the fact that the hard drive is less than 2 months old. It is a 1 terabyte seagate external drive. Does anyone know whether this is a bug in Karmic, or should I be backing up my data asap?

Jan 2, 2010My girlfriend has a dual boot netbook I set up for her with Vista + 9.10. Her internet service went down yesterday temporarily and she was messing around with the computer to get back online and somehow booted into the Windows Rescue Partition and began the Windows Restore process, then turned the computer off during the middle of the restore process.It's her only computer and she lives 1800 miles away. And since it's a netbook there's no optical drive.
When she boots up now, the netbook goes straight into Grub Rescue mode. I got her to try most of the commands for Grub Rescue, but most of them come back as "Unknown Command". The "LS" command works though, and she was able to get a list of partitions displayed.Does anyone know of some commands she could use try to boot back into 9.10 (assuming it's still there)? Or even boot into Windows? Specifically, is there a simple command that could be combined with "LS" to specify a partition and try to boot into it?
Ubuntu Installation :: Boot From Flash Drive 10.10 Grub Rescue?
Oct 24, 2010First time poster and recent Ubuntu adopter. I recently installed 10.10 on my main HD alongside a separate windows (xp) partition (it worked perfectly). Then I decided to get fancy and installed 10.10 to a flash drive directly from a live cd. I attempted to boot from the flash drive, and got a black screen with a blinking underscore for about 10 minutes, then I forcefully rebooted. Now, whenever I attempt to boot at all from my main HD I get "error: no such device and a ton of misc numbers. And the flash drive will not allow me to boot from it. Currently, I'm working within the Live CD.
I have a few projects I need to complete with Dreamweaver inside XP, so recovering it completely would be nice.

Ubuntu :: Warning - Hard Drive Failure Is Imminent ?
Oct 3, 2010I was testing out Ubuntu 10.04 on both the a desktop and a laptop (both HP...I don't remember the particular models but if asked I will find out). It worked fine on the desktop. When I booted the laptop with Ubuntu it worked fine. When I tried to connect it to the internet it seemed to go okay. I mean it asked for the network password and everything. But as soon as the signal was recognized I got a warning that said "Hard drive failure is imminent."
Now this laptop has gone through problems before. I don't know the extents because it's a family laptop and I rarely use it (it's super slow. It used to run Vista but now it runs XP and it's slow regardless). I think the hard drive may have been replaced at one point of another and it has had to be re installed numerous times before. And the way it is used leads me to believe that there is not a lot of space left in that hard drive. So that may have been the issue.
But I want to make sure it is a hardware problem and not something that will happen on the device I eventually decide to install Ubuntu on. How to understand why the hard drive would fail when the live CD doesn't actively use the hard drive, at least not the way it would if it had been installed in the hard drive.
Hardware :: Can't Enter Set Up Hard Drive Failure?
May 26, 2010I have (had?) a 36GB 10000rpm disc and a 500GB 7200rpm disc on my machine. I had Windows 7 and Fedora 12 installed on the faster disc with the larger one as storage (for videos etc etc). Yesterday I tried to install Fedora 13 on the fast one wiping off Windows 7 and Fedora 12 in the process. So I told Anaconda just to install on the smaller disc and the install seemed to be going perfectly until it had installed something over 900 of the 1200 or so of the packages it was supposed to be going to install when the monitor screen went blank (black) and the monitor could not detect any video and switched itself off. Trying to switch the monitor on again it still found nothing. Watching the hard-drive and DVD drive lights I waited until it had finished installing (when, of course, it also ejected the disc). I then tried to reboot the computer without the disc and it stopped at the motherboard flash screen as it did (and does) when I try to boot with the Fedora 13 install disc (and also with my old Fedora 12 install disc).
I have not touched the hardware in any way. Before I downloaded Fedora 13 (and after I'd backed everything up) I had opened the case to check how much dust was in the CPU cooler fins but since there was little I just very gently brushed and Hoovered - the machine worked for a couple of hours thereafter while I downloaded Fedora 13 burned it to a DVD and for most of the install as above.I updated the BIOS with ASUS EZ Flash and but it has not solved the problem.
Having disconnected the "faulty" disc I have installed Fedora 13 on the large slower 500GB disc and it works OK but if I connect the faster 36GB disc (before trying to boot, of course) I just get to the motherboard flash screen.If the disc failed why/how did the computer continue to install Fedora 13 from the DVD? Is there any significance in the monitor having gone blank?
Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Rescue - Access My Files On External - Failing - Drive ?
Jun 28, 2011I have an hp laptop and i had ubuntu on it for 3 years. my hard drive started to fail a while ago (i had ubuntu 10 on it until 1 week ago) and a then it all went black...I took the laptop to a repair shop, they told me it was the disc, so i bought a new disc, installed it on my laptop and reinstalled the new ubuntu 11. so far so good. i have now a working OS, internet connection and i can in fact type this message.
The thing is: all my files are on the old drive, which doesn't load/boot/start/read anymore. I have tested it on some friends's pc, tried a few HD disgnostic tools, they all send the same message: "fail"
I then tried to mount my old drive (with all my precious files in it) on my laptop as an external drive (usb) hoping that ubuntu 11 could read it as an external usb key: it gets read by the system, but it shows no files at all. it also shows an error message saying the drive can not be mounted, with some "sdb1" thing. i am sorry but i'm really dumb when it comes to tech language.
Then i tried to boot it on start-up but i got the grub rescue> thing and nothing else, just a sad, blinking cursor to recover my files,i have also tried testdisk but couldn't understand very well how to use it, and then photorec, from which i recovered bits and pieces of files, with no name. some of them are just parts some of them are complete.
My problem is: i have to get access to my files, as I use them for work, i couldn't do a back-up recently and i have some real important deadline to meet... for which i need those files. is there any way i could solve the grub issue and have that drive load/mount again as external usb?

Sep 16, 2010After migrating my dual-boot system (XP & Suse 10.3) to a new hard drive my system boots to XP OK but when it begins the linux boot process it gets stuck looking for the old drive, even though I have rewritten the fstab using the old "/dev/sda5" notation to identify the drive. An error comes up referring to the "/dev/by-id" name for the previous drive, not the new one. For some reason the devices are not rescanned as is evident from the contents of /etc/lvm/.cache and the listing under /dev/by-id. Is there some simple way to force a rescan during the boot process?

I am however unsure which is the best one to use if I want to achieve this:Somehow I want to back up my hard drive containing my ubuntu system byte for byte so that if the hard drive were to fail I could simply go to the store, get a new hard drive, restore my backup and be up and running again without having to do any re installments of ubuntu or any other programs for that matter.
What is the easiest program that does this? I would like it to support incremental backup.rsync with the "Back in Time interface"?bacula?

Dec 27, 2010i have a netbook compaq mini with a sata toshiba hard drive.XP was installed on this machine until the hard drive started to have bad blocks.Then i bought a mypassport500go to install f14 on it.It worked but know the sata hard drive is more and more faulty.When i try to boot f14 it displays :acpi : package has zero elements. So i cannot boot.I tryed rescuecd, does not work either.i tryed many kernel params to disable sata at boot but it seems to be builtin.there is no option in the bios to disable the hard drive.

Sep 11, 2015It all started about a week after upgrading to Jessie and I had an unusual system failure, in that the CPU went to 100% usage and the hard drive light was on constantly. The keyboard and mouse were were non-responsive. Not having REISUB enabled I did the "stupid" thing and pushed the reset button on the computer. BAD BOY! As a result the computer would not boot and I had to use a live CD to format the drive and install Wheezy (I had the CD).
After installing Wheezy, everything worked well for about 3 days and then it did the same thing. Fortunately I had REISUB enabled and was able to reboot. I looked at the syslog and found a segfault with colord-sane and, after some research that suggested colord-sane might be a problem, I set UseSane=1 in colord.conf . Things seemed to be okay for about 4 days.
Well, after all that I had another problem today with booting. During boot I got an error message saying that there was some hard drive problem and that I needed to log in and run fsck, which I did . There were I believe 4 INODE errors that I was asked if I wanted to repair, to which I responded yes. After that the system booted correctly. After booting and entering the Gnome Classic desktop I looked at the Disk Utility and checked the SMART data. There is now 1 bad sector where before there were none. The drive is a one year old WD 500GB Velociraptor.
Don't know if this is relevant, but in the days before this latest "crash" I had downloaded about 8 movies using bittorrent. Could this have overtaxed the HDD?
I guess my questions are: When fsck "repaired" the disk would it have moved any data from the bad sector to a new location? What may have caused the sector to go bad ? Should I be buying a new hard drive?
The system seems to boot okay,at this time, so I assume that no critical system files were affected. Just curious as to how I should proceed. First is BACK UP my data. Got that !
One more thing I just thought of is that every time it "crashed", I was using LXDE.
Ubuntu :: Can't Boot- Bad Hard Drive Or GRUB?
Feb 12, 2010I've been scouring the forums and Google for 2 days now and am not sure which track I should follow with my problem, because the GRUB path doesn't seem to be working, nor the fsck. I'd appreciate any insight anyone can provide, as I feel I'm spinning my wheels at this stage.A few days ago, I was transferring files from my Ubuntu server via SFTP to my laptop across my local network. All of a sudden, the transfer quit in the middle of transferring a file and since then, I was unable to FTP or SSH in to the server. I hooked up a monitor to see what was going on and there was only a black screen, so I powered off the server and powered back on.
While booting, the Ubuntu logo screen initially appears, but then goes to black and error messages come up, asking me if I wish to start the degraded RAID. "Gave up waiting for root device" is the message I get and it tells me that /dev/md2 does not exist and drops me to a initramfs shell. When I try to start in degraded RAID, it tells me:
mdadm: create user root not found
mdadm: create group disk not found
[49.702561] raid5: failed to run raid set md2
mdadm: failed to run RUN_ARRAY /dev/md2: Input/output error
mdadm: not enough devices to start the array
I have 4 hard drives in the server, configured as RAID 5.I boot from a Live CD and have a look at the discs.All are said to be healthy, except for the 4th which is said to have some bad sectors.I'm unable to access (or don't properly know how to access) the /boot/grub/menu.1st file to change the root delay parameter, which is what I thought I would try first.
Ubuntu Installation :: Grub 2 On A Second Hard Drive
Apr 11, 2011I've been reading and searching the forums here and most of the problems I have read about stem from writing the grub2 to the MBR of the primary drive. So i'm trying to avoid these problems if possible. Heres what I'm trying to achieve. I have two seperate hard drives in my PC, on the first is Vista Home Premium 64bit. The second drive is now completely empty and has just been reformated to NTFS with the standard 4096 setting.
I would like to install Ubuntu 10.10 and grub2 onto the second drive so that nothing is written to the primary drive at all. In a thread I read it mentioned that to do this I would need to use a "Specify Partitions Manually (Advanced)" option. My thinking is that I can just use the same process I'm using to run Ubuntu from a dvd disk to start Ubuntu once installed on the second drive. The process is an F10 "Boot Menu" when the computer is first turned on just before it starts to run Vista.
So my question is about the advanced installer options. Is there a walkthough available anywhere? (with screenshots maybe). I'm just worried that something may come up in the advanced installer that I have no knowlege of. I can re-format the second drive again from within Ubuntu running from disk if I need to (NTFS???). Also when running Ubuntu from disk I can still see the main primary drive and all its files. It would be nice to have this option but its not essential. My system. Jan 15, 2009I installed a new hard drive to my system. I use a program called R-Drive image to copy all my os to my new drive. It done a pretty good job too, its an exact copy. I deleted the old one. But obviously now I cant boot. I had a look at the menu.lst file i dont know what to change it to. heres my drive setup,

Jun 19, 2011I have windows on my box, I have fedora 14 on my external that goes through my usb. Grub is installed on my usb. Since the only thing stored on my external was fedora i really didn't have to do much to it. just go into bios and boot from usb. Now that im using fedora more, Id like to add Vista to my choices. I guess the numbers change once your using an external drive. Ive read some of the problems like mine but they didn't quite do it. Im going to inclose 2 screen shots of my drives/partitions and my grub.conf.

Jun 16, 2010I have 6 hard drives that have 9.10 and 10.04 on them. Not as a dual boot, but some hard drives have different versions on them. When I have plugged the drives in a couple of weeks later, the grub is gone and system will not boot. I get like a grub 1.5 error and that is all the options I have. Does anyone one know why this happens? Nothing on the drives but the O/S to get rid of windows. All drives worked perfect until they were removed and installed later.

Jun 6, 2011I have a HP Compaq 6710b notebook with W7 on it. I want to use Ubuntu for hobby activities, but as this is a company notebook, W7 should remain intact. I decided to install Ubuntu to an external drive.I set BIOS boot order to CD-USB-HDD.I attached a 2.5" 250GB WD Passport usb hard disk and installed Ubuntu to it from the CD.As a result, the clean install doesn't boot, I get a mere grub console (normal, not rescue).
Examining the situation I learned, that during Live CD session the inner hdd is hd0 and usb drive is hd1. Grub.cfg gets compiled to use /dev/sdb.When booting from usb drive, BIOS makes it to be hd0 and inner hdd becomes hd1 so grub tries to load kernel from W7 partition (and can't find it, I wonder why? )How to fix problem? Although grub.cfg is supposed not to be edited, may I change every sdb to sda in it?

Sep 5, 2010I bought a new hard drive. I thought it would be clever and SAFE to install Ubuntu on the Hard Drive so that would not interfere with the internal hard drive on my laptop. It worked fine until I disconnected the hard drive. I got the "Grub Error 21" when I installed. I know how to get around it, unfortunately, I have to lug around this hard drive whenever my computer sleeps or restarts. I would like to be able to restart and boot into Windows without my hard drive connected. Is this possible?
