I run RHEL5 on Dell GX280 with "Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 04)" and i810 driver. But I cannot obtain 1440x900 resolution. Here's my xorg.conf:

so I've finally told myself i'd be better off with ubuntu instead of windows. And now I'm seeing I've made the wrong decision. I've spent 4 hours searching the web about how to get the 1440x900, tried some of the solutions and nothing worked. The resolution doesnt show up in the nvidia control panel. I tried somehow editing xorg.conf which just messed everything up so i had to put it in the default state..

Word is from googling that long as vbeinfo lists a resolution, GRUB2 can use it. This doesn't seem to be true: vbeinfo says that 1440x900 is available but it doesn't work.
Testing it from the GRUB2 command line:

I've been loitering over my resolution and nvidia xserver settings for about 2 days now, fiddling with xorg.conf and breaking ubuntu in the process trying to get my resolution at it's native settings. I've searched through many forums and none of them have solved my problem. Its maximum resolution is 1360x768, which isn't enough. It should be 1440x900. I have tried adding custom modes to the xorg.conf file and it wouldn't work. I don't know what's going on. Also here is my xorg.conf since I saved the nvidia settings to it...

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Dell Latitude D610 (with ATI X300 graphics card) and am trying to set the default resolution to 1440x900 for my Samsung Syncmaster 931 monitor. I have installed "fglrx" and when I run "xrandr -q" I get the following information.

After having problems with an onboard graphics chipset I've just installed an ATI Radeon 128Mb 9000 Pro AGP graphics card into my old computer... The problem is that I can't get it to use 1440x900 resolution that my LG L194WT (Ubuntu won't detect it) requires and the highest I can select is 1360x768 and that looks all wrong

My monitor's dvi jack is damaged so my nvidia geforce 210 does not recognise the supported resolutions correctly.
result: while it actually can support upto 1440x900, the highest available resolution is 1360x768.
While on windows, i used the nvidia utility to add the custom resolution and everything was nice.
On ubuntu 10.04, i haven't found a way to do that yet. yes, i searched forums, tried a couple of things with the xorg.conf file and lxrandr, etc. but to no avail.
I did manage to get the resolution listed in ubuntu's own display manager, and it shows 1440x900, but it doesn't apply when i hit 'apply'.
The nvidia settings manager does not show the resolution.
New install of 5.4 and I have a dell S1909W display that runs 1440x900. I don't run a windowed environment and only use CLI. I am only getting 25 lines per screen with huge text and I need to set the resolution so I can actually work :) I tried adding vga=866 to my /boot/grub/menu.lst file at the end of the kernel line but nothing changes after reboot.

Here's the problem, the only two resolutions it will work in is either 1900x1200 OR 1440x900. Anything in between shoves the display about 5 inches to the left, so far over that it's not correctable by the monitors own horizontal control.

But hearing lot of linux improvements,I thought Ubuntu/Fedora/Suse over past few years must have become equivalent to XP. Friends of mine use Fedora in office. So got Live CD and installed . Installed fine but my monitor resolution only displayed 800x600. (highest possible). Thought that since Linux runs on mobile it can very well run on my Old Computer.

I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens.

Does anyone know what boot parameters to use or how to get Fedora to start the install process in a resolution other than the "Optimum resolution"? resolution=640x40 vga=ask. These do not work. They set the debug display but when the graphical portion starts it defaults to the "optimum resolution" and the message displays "Cannot Display This Video Mode". As you consider the answer, think this is a new computer, blank hard disk, etc. I am installing Fedora 10. Tried 11 and Vista seems less buggy, prefer 10 or 9.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Arch Linux computer hooked up to my 32" TV running LXDE. The resolution is 1360x768 (WXGA 16:9). Everything is too small. I've increased the font size but some things remain small like the lxpanel fonts, some icons and buttons.
If I set the resolution to 800x600 then everything looks better but squashed. From LXDE's Monitor Settings I only have a choice of 1360x768, 1024x768, 800x600 etc; basically only one resolution that doesn't look squashed. Can I override this and use a custom resolution that will maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio? I believe 1067x600 might do it?

I ran 11.1 and had a good 1024*768 resolution on my (old) ATI mobility M3 AGP 2* graphic card. Now I did a new installation 11.3 from dvd and the resolution is not higher than 800*600 while on the installation splash screen I could click on the higher resolution. I see there is a lot of documentation on this issue, but that is so difficult. How do I get the resolution higher?

I plugged in my Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and it booted up in 1024x768 instead of 1280x1024 which is the default resolution for this monitor.Why would it change when it's been 1280 x 1024 everytime but this time? I am new to the linux OS.I have a 1366x768 resolution monitor with a maximum vertical frequency of 60 hz. This worked well on windows. As I've already read in the internet, this can rise problems on Ubuntu. The monitor is connected through a switchbox, so it doesn't get recognised. Even if it's hooked up directly (Ubuntu recognises it) I can't choose the correct resolution.
Currently I can't use another graphics driver than the generic one. The screen stays black ("wrong vertical frequency" displayed on LCD Monitor) if I use another driver. I'd like to use the proprietary ATI/AMD fglrx driver. I edited the xorg.conf file, but I was unable to get the right resolution. It seems to be outdated on Ubuntu 9.10. After that fail, I searched for alternatives and ended up with a file called

in the "Xsession.d" folder. I'm using the following contents:

Ok, I'm sick of Grub2. It's a total mess that is needlessly complicated in the worst fashion imaginable. (Yes, I've read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2, it doesn't help.) I can't understand Grub2 developers thinking (maybe they're aliens?) and, quite frankly, I just don't care anymore. how to change resolution for textmode terminals (tty1, tty2, ...)? I don't want to read any more [censored] about gfxpayload and how it's supposed to work. Please don't respond if you can't provide an example config that simply just works.
[Edit/SOLVED]: No longer an issue in Lucid Lynx for me. See this HOWTO. Note that 1280x1024 isn't the only option. You can use any resolution supported by VBE of your video card. Use vbeinfo command in Grub shell to see the list of available display modes.
