Fedora Installation :: Windows XP Serivce Pack 3 Supports 1440x900 Resoultion New LCD Display?
Jan 25, 2009
I have 6 year old computer with Geforce 2 Integrated GPU . Windows XP serivce pack 3 supports 1440x900 resoultion with no issues of my new LCD display. But hearing lot of linux improvements,I thought Ubuntu/Fedora/Suse over past few years must have become equivalent to XP. Friends of mine use Fedora in office. So got Live CD and installed . Installed fine but my monitor resolution only displayed 800x600. (highest possible). Thought that since Linux runs on mobile it can very well run on my Old Computer.

I am running fedora Fedora 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686 - works fine, but it puts my display adapter in old fashoned simple vga mode.
DISTRIBTION
Fedora 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686
Mysql 5.1.47
Apache 2.2.15
CONFIGURATION
1.25 ghz AMD athlon
NVIDIA RIVA TNT display adapter
ECS K7S5a board / chipset
AMD BIOS 07.00T
512 mb main mem
128 kb primary cache
256 2ndary cache
66 mhz bus clock
I use the bios to dual boot between two disks, (1) this op sys and (2)win98se - where I have a driver that fully supports the nvidia.
The disadvantage to my current situation is that there are some programs - eg Evolution - that assume I can see more than you see with this setup - eg the buttons at the bottom of the screen do not appear and i have to do a trial and error tabbing to get what i want. I just downloaded openoffice and i see that it wants 1000x2000 or so. Thus I wont even try to install it unless i can resolve the adapter thing.
I'm very happy with this fedora - use it for software development. But as I become more fond of it, I would like to use it instead of windows - which I can't unless i can see the whole screen
At one point - in response to a suggestion that I download security updates - I did so and got 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686. It was incompatible with my config - put up a screen that looked like a tv test pattern and went into a loop. So I went back to 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.

The file name (with extension) is given below Win2-7Pack_v6.0_Multilang_Aero_MD5_ca34601ee39e933d4131 d46cd012041a.tar.lzma and this file, on double click gives an error, I've attached screen-shot of it.

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Dell Latitude D610 (with ATI X300 graphics card) and am trying to set the default resolution to 1440x900 for my Samsung Syncmaster 931 monitor. I have installed "fglrx" and when I run "xrandr -q" I get the following information.
Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1440 x 1440
VGA-0 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 410mm x 257mm
1440x900 59.9 + 75.0
1280x1024 75.0 60.0
[Code]....
Other posts say I need to edit "etc/x11/xorg.conf" but this file does not appear to exist.

it will NEVER let me change the screen resolution to 1440x900. It never gives me the option. I then spend hours looking for fixes, making Xconf files and editing them to no avail. The same is true for Fedora 15 (Beta). what can i do to get the 1440x900 option in my "Display" list in Fedora.

so i had to run recovery mode and all my original settings were lost.. boohoo ill get over it. soon enough itll be back to normal. BUT the main reason i had gotten so screwed up before is because i was trying to change my screen resolution. Now from having my computer for a month or so ive realized there are many diff verisons of Ubuntu and many ways of doing things. All im trying to do is change my screen from 640x480 to a more viewable size, cant think of the dimensions right now. Im running NVIDIA graphics and when i try to run display preferences from settings it obviously won't open cause it isnt configured.

I am looking for a locally hosted web based mail client that will work on Windows (Vista and up) as well as Linux. Right now, I use mutt (Cygwin mutt on Windows), but I was wondering if there was a simple web based client I could use. It does not need all of the fancy features of mutt, just the ability to send mail and allow me to browse my local mbox files.

I have a VM with Windows XP that is driving me crazy. Everything works great except the display windows (and networking, but that is a different story) I am open VirtManager and go to display the OS and the images will get distorted. I will open IE and scroll down a webpage and some of the text will remain still and others will move, leave an image of garbage. This makes it very aggravating to use. To clear the page I can shake the window (using the cursor not my hands) or move from one tab to another till it clears.. then if I scroll again I have to deal with it all over again.

I am planning buy a new desktop computer and there are several models that come with touchscreen, I don't really care about this feature , I just want to know if Fedora can operates under a touchscreen system. If Fedora doesn't support touchscreen systems, Is there any plan to integrate this option in a near future?

Does anyone have a kernel that supports Atheros network cards? I am using ASUS EEE PC netbooks and none of the kernels I have access to have drivers installed for the NICs. I am having issues when I try to build my own kernel and maybe someone has a precompiled one? Either that or if someone has a basic, step-by-step guide to building your own custom kernel. This is my first time building a kernel and I am kind of lost. This isn't actually for running Ubuntu I will be using it in an imaging program called FOG. I just need a kernel that will support these NICs so I am able to do some imaging.

so I've finally told myself i'd be better off with ubuntu instead of windows. And now I'm seeing I've made the wrong decision. I've spent 4 hours searching the web about how to get the 1440x900, tried some of the solutions and nothing worked. The resolution doesnt show up in the nvidia control panel. I tried somehow editing xorg.conf which just messed everything up so i had to put it in the default state..

I just posted this issue in the server section. I see now that it probably should go here but didn't see a "move" option.
Unless this issue is immediately familiar to someone, my question really is how can I troubleshoot a failed installation attempt?
I built a simple file server. It was running 10.04 with Samba fine for about 6 months. It was a RAID 1 system using LVM and no encryption.
I recently discovered that one of the drives was already failing with a bunch of bad sectors. So, I decided to replace the drives and re-install everything. However, for some reason, it's not finishing the install. It gets to 94% and "Configuring language-pack-en-base" and just hangs. No drive light activity. I've waited hours and it never progresses.
Some details of the server:
Two WD 1.5 TB drives.
RAID 1
Adding encryption this time.
LVM
Partitions: boot, root, swap
I have tried several variations. Putting the boot partition in or out of the LVM. Went back to 10.04. Even tried to re-install on the same old hard drives that I'm replacing. All of these variations result in the exact same issue.
The two differences that I can think of are adding encryption and that the motherboard firmware has been updated since the last install.

I'm trying to use GRUB2 in graphical mode with 1440x900 resolution, but the result is always garbled nonsense: the highest resolution I can get is 1280x800.
Word is from googling that long as vbeinfo lists a resolution, GRUB2 can use it. This doesn't seem to be true: vbeinfo says that 1440x900 is available but it doesn't work.
Testing it from the GRUB2 command line:
set gxfmode=1440x900
terminal_output gfxterm
# -> garbled nonsense
# back to trusty 640x480
terminal_output console

I've been loitering over my resolution and nvidia xserver settings for about 2 days now, fiddling with xorg.conf and breaking ubuntu in the process trying to get my resolution at it's native settings. I've searched through many forums and none of them have solved my problem. Its maximum resolution is 1360x768, which isn't enough. It should be 1440x900. I have tried adding custom modes to the xorg.conf file and it wouldn't work. I don't know what's going on. Also here is my xorg.conf since I saved the nvidia settings to it...

Upgraded to Fedora 11 and my display aspect ratio is now broken. I have a 23" Acer screen, but in Gnome its auto detecting as a 20" Acer display and the aspect ratio is wrong and the display grainy. I read the FAQs and am trying out some suggestions. Created an xorg.conf file in the correct place, contains the correct monitor settings but my display is still broken. Q. How do I force the kernel to read the xorg.conf file ?(PS: I'm kind of a newbie, have only come back to linux after a few years of using Windows)

i did not search in depth for this, as google spit a whole of different aswers at me, making not much sense at all. So here we go: Is it possible to install Fedora on a PC which has no keyboard nor mouse nor display attached to it? And if so plx give a link or a short description how to do it. I read about kickstart, but this was all a little wacky.
Note: The PC will have network access.

I'm new to Fedora and just installed F10 yesterday. Everything was perfect, no snags at all, until I used the software tool to install the ATI drivers. Now my computer boots but instead of going back to the GUI all I get is a gray screen. I've tried everything I know to get to the command line so I can go back to my old X11 settings but there's no response -just the gray screen.
I'd prefer not to have to reinstall if I could avoid it. Is there a know bug with either a Toshiba Satellite A210 series laptop or the ATI Radeon Mobility X1300 graphics card? Since I'm not able to get to the command line, I don't know of a way to diagnose what's failing.

I just upgraded to an ASUS MS227 on a Ubuntu 9.10 box with a "NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)" video card. Here's the problem, the only two resolutions it will work in is either 1900x1200 OR 1440x900. Anything in between shoves the display about 5 inches to the left, so far over that it's not correctable by the monitors own horizontal control.
This is my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Configured Video Device"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
[Code]...
