Ubuntu :: Resolution Can't Be Set Correctly
Mar 17, 2010
I just installed ubuntu 9.10 (latest version + updates) on my computer. I am new to the linux OS.I have a 1366x768 resolution monitor with a maximum vertical frequency of 60 hz. This worked well on windows. As I've already read in the internet, this can rise problems on Ubuntu. The monitor is connected through a switchbox, so it doesn't get recognised. Even if it's hooked up directly (Ubuntu recognises it) I can't choose the correct resolution.
Currently I can't use another graphics driver than the generic one. The screen stays black ("wrong vertical frequency" displayed on LCD Monitor) if I use another driver. I'd like to use the proprietary ATI/AMD fglrx driver. I edited the xorg.conf file, but I was unable to get the right resolution. It seems to be outdated on Ubuntu 9.10. After that fail, I searched for alternatives and ended up with a file called
45custom_xrandr-settings
in the "Xsession.d" folder. I'm using the following contents:
Code:
xrandr --newmode "1366x768_60.00" 85.86 1368 1440 1584 1800 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-0 "1366x768_60.00"
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1366x768_60.00
But the monitor still complains that it's the wrong vertical frequency when I use the fglrx driver. The generic driver uses another resolution than the specified one (as always) and gives me a blurry picture on the screen. I have also tried other modelines, Ubuntu just doesn't seem to be able to display 1366x768@60hz.

I have a HPL2045W LCD monitor connected to my Fedora 14 PC through a Belkin KVM switch. On Fedora 12, the screen resolution (upto 1680x1050) was correctly recognised, but in Fedora 14, the best I can get is 1024x768. How do I correct this obvious error?My graphics card is an ATI Radeon RV2600 which has worked flawlessly for several years, until this version of Fedora.

Today my desktop reverted to 1024x768 resolution immediately after init. I tried changing it back but only 1024x768 and 800x600 are listed as supported in the display settings, even though my monitor supports resolutions of up to 1360x768. Rebooting the system did not solve the problem.I'm running Fedora 15 x86_64 on kernel 2.6.38.8-35 with the proprietary nvidia drivers of version 275.09.07. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 933n. nvidia-settings is apparently not detecting it correctly, it thinks I'm using a CRT monitor.I was actually in this exact same situation a few months back, but it kind of went away on its own, so I didn't mind too much. So, what could be causing this, and what can I do?

Some month ago I installed openSUSE 11.1. It worked not bad, but I wanted to get the newes release of Firefox. So I did an upgrade to 11.2. Yast2 refused to work with an error message: unknown option -s (or similar). The regular updates didn't work also. Then I decided to do a new installation. Now I'm having a new problem: Display settings (Anzeige-Einstellungen) reports: Monitor unknown (Monitor unbekannt).
Possible resolution settings are: 800 x 600; 640 x 480; 400 x 300; 320 x 240;
Possible refresh rates are: 60 Hz or 56 Hz @ 800 x 600
I need 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz. In the previous installation it worked well. How I can teach openSUSE to run 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz?
YAST2 Hardware information shows me in Monitor > Monitor > Resources > Resolution: High: 768; Vertical frequency: 76; Wide: 1024
The VGA controller is also correct shown in Display > 3d Blaster Savage 4

Barebones installation. Manually start x with 'startx'. For some weird reason, the resolution randomly sets to either 1024x768 or 800x600. How do I permanently set a resolution?

I'm running 10.10. I have a Nvidia GTX 460. My actual resolution is only 1024x768. I can't get the native resolution (1280x1024). Nvidia-settings does not show this resolution. Google hasn't helped at all so far, and I have installed the Nvidia Driver.

When I installed Wicd, and ran it for the first time, I got an error something like: "Could not connect to Wicd's dbus session- check the Wicd log file for more info". However, later when I restarted my computer, Wicd started, but I can't connect to my network, it shows up as <hidden>, I can connect to linksys, so I know that wireless is working on that computer. I know that there's nothing wrong with my wireless router, because I can connect to my network in this computer.

I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

I was evaluating a live distro on a USB drive and the resolution got changed from my normal 1680X1050 to 1024X768. I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens.

I have googled this and I refuse to believe the answer is "older video card" or "ubuntu". Does anyone know what boot parameters to use or how to get Fedora to start the install process in a resolution other than the "Optimum resolution"? resolution=640x40 vga=ask. These do not work. They set the debug display but when the graphical portion starts it defaults to the "optimum resolution" and the message displays "Cannot Display This Video Mode". As you consider the answer, think this is a new computer, blank hard disk, etc. I am installing Fedora 10. Tried 11 and Vista seems less buggy, prefer 10 or 9.

For 6 months I have used this computer as a ediacenter/seedbox on a decent TV. It crapped out and we got a new one. Hooked it up, had super messed up resolution. Ran some command (really don't remember) that ran you through the setup configuration asking for keyboard layout etc.
Didn't work. Deleted xorg.cong, didn't work. Blank xorg.conf, didn't work. What happens is it shows the Ubuntu name and loading bar, loads, then at 100% it shows 2 of them in purple around the screen. Obviously X isn't loading correctly.

I have been using Ubuntu for about a month now. I have the latest version, 11.04. Today, I was watching and downloading movies on Miro and while I was watching, the screen froze and I couldn't get it back to normal. I manually shut down the computer and when I turned it back on it brought me to a page that reads code...
I do not know what to do from here or what the problem is, I was thinking maybe one of the movies I downloaded caused the problem because it happened right when I was downloading. Any help is appreciated, I really want to have my computer working again.

Being tired of my FAT32 partitions on my 80GB Classic, I had it reformatted on a Macintosh to HFS+ (Mac-formatted) at the Apple Store. As per the abundance of threads online, I also had them disable journaling through the Mac's Disk Utility and it appeared it was ready for Ubuntu. I added the UUID to fstab to allow write privileges. Due to the issues I heard with getting it to mount in Banshee on 64-bit Karmic Koala, I used the killall -9 nautilus command and successfully got Banshee to read and mount the iPod. After syncing my iPod, I verified that the content successfully transferred as the disk was now showing a large portion of the drive in use (presumably from the new media). After disconnecting my iPod, from both Banshee and from Nautilus, the iPod presumably safely unmounts and disconnects giving me the okay to unplug it. Whether I unplug it or not, after the OK to Disconnect progress bar completes, the iPod freezes (showing the silver Apple logo). After a while, it seems to turn itself back on, but doesn't show any media on the device. In fact, when I select 'About', it shows 0GB used and 0GB free (strange!).
I've been to the Apple Store about three times to have them reformat it and start over as I keep thinking I'm doing something wrong along the way. The data seems to be ON the iPod as I can play it back through Banshee (and on GTKpod), but the iPod menu itself doesn't seem to recognize anything and I can't access the music through the iPod. I think the iPod database may be corrupted, but I don't understand why this is not corrected with a full restore and why I seem to be able to access the music through Ubuntu.
(P.s. I do NOT want to have to go back to a Windows-formatted, FAT32, iPod.)
(P.p.s. I changed the permissions to my user rather than the 99 or something it was before. Also, whenever I load the iPod in Banshee, it shows all the songs on the iPod.)

I started another thread on this (URl...), but the topic was not specific to what I now know the problem to be. So Ive started a more appropriately titled thread.In my local network I SSH (via Putty) to my Ubuntu 9.1 server and the tunnel a VNC connection through to it. No problems at all. I forward port 5900 through SSH to do this. My local servers have port 5900 blocked, so I know it is tunnelling correctly without trying to access port 5900. I cannot VNC directly to port 5900, as I would expect. Everything works just as expected.
When I SSH external to my router a I use a virtual server connection through port 22. This works just fine.I then start a VNC session, in the exact same way as I do localy, tunnelled through port 5900. Specifically I tunnel port 5900 to my.router.public.ip port 5900. However when I start up VNC it times out. The reason is that my firewall blocks a request to my routers public IP address from port 5900 on the server running SSH as follows :I have tried this both with the Ubuntu built in desktop and with x11vnc. Both give identical results. When I start x11vnc I tell it to listen on port 5900. This, as explained above, wokrs just fine in my internal network and does NOT put out any requests on port 5900.

I'm having trouble setting up dual monitors on my HP Pavilion dv7-1020us laptop, with an Nvidia 9600M GT graphics card, and Ubuntu 9.10. I installed Ubuntu via Wubi, on top of Windows 7. I tried this before on the same laptop when I was using Vista and Wubi, and Ubuntu was able to recognize my Graphics card, and install a proprietary driver. I wasn't able to test dual monitors, though. However, now that I'm using W7 and Ubuntu, it cannot use a dual-monitors correctly. It recognizes the monitor, but it only displays a mirror display of my Laptop monitor, not acting as a separate monitor, like I want it to. I tried messing around with the settings in the display menu, but nothing works. I tried downloading linux drivers for my card from Nvidia's site, but the file is in a .run extension, which I don't know how to install. What should I do to get this working?

I finally bought a second hard drive to back up all my files since I'm planning on wiping my hard drive completely clean and reinstalling Windows and Ubuntu once Lucid comes out. I'm just wondering, how common is it for files to become corrupt when transferring from one hard drive to another? I ask this because I usually have trouble when transferring (usually large files) onto my flash drive. I know that actual hard drives are different but I just want to make sure. Also, is there a way I can confirm that everything transferred correctly? Most of my files are music so it would be a pain to check every single one to see if it works.

I bough a 640 GB external USB disk.I found something wasn't working well when I couldn't restore a backup from the disk (with sbackup).So I tried to convert the filesystem from fat32 to something newer.I installed gparted, and it shows no partitions on the 640 drive (however, I can access the filesystem!!!). Also, for some reason it shows as a 298.08 GiB drive.So I thought I should format it to solve this. When I tried to do this, gparted simply closed, with no error messages.

i will occasionally open a gui program, for example an ip address calc and a dvd burning program, and the bottom of the window is cut off by the screen; the screen size is put on the most applicable, detectable screen size; on both a netbook with a small rectangular screen and an older desktop with CRT monitor that is square; i could see both of these having issues beyond my own user-stupidity, so i thought i would ask: how do i get to the bottom of the window to see very crucial info? i hover the mouse on the top until it changes to a horiz bar, but it wont drag down;
- i hover mouse on bottom but it wont change to bar/arrow;
- i hover on corners to make an angle bar/arrow but it will only resize horizontally;
- i right click the top border and hit "resize" but it will only resize horizontally;
this, as well as getting my touchpad settings to stay the same after poweroff have been the bane of my existence edit: sometimes these posts are simply echo chambers for me to listen to my own ineptitude; i found how to save the touchpad settings,re-edit: i did not actually fix the touchpad, but i have posted elsewhere so as to not cross-post.

I have just installed 10.04 as an upgrade from 9.10.
I am having difficulty because none of the USB drives I am using are unmounting as they should be. normally speaking when erasing data from my USB key when you come to unmounting it it will ask if you would like to send this data to the recycle bin thus giving you back the extra storage space on the device. 10.04 isnt allowing me to send these items to the recycle bin ad doesn't give the option to do this.

I've been having some trouble getting transparency to work properly on the panels. I've attached a screenshot in which I've got a fully transparent background image applied to the panel, yet the main menu area, status area, and clock are not affected by the background.
I've searched google quit a bit, and all I find are topics saying things like using alt-scroll to make it transparent, but I want all of the icons to remain opaque. Also, people say to use a solid color and adjust the transparency in the properties menu, I've tried all of this, these are obvious.

I started using Ubuntu in 2006 and it provided me with pretty much all the functionality I needed with a very intuitive interface and and organization (esp the package system.) I replaced all my windows installations with Ubuntu and never looked back.. I consider myself a somewhat computer savvy user but with each new release, I've encountered numerous problems that severely disrupt the normal functionality of a basic OS and cannot be solved in a straight-forward manner. Some example I'll list:
1) GRUB. I got a new Dell Laptop with Windows 7 and I wish to dual boot.I repartition and install Ubuntu 9.10. OK, so far so good. When Lucid came out, I upgraded. Then I reboot and I'm greeted with garbled letters instead of the usual GRUB screen. So far, I have not been able to resolved this issue other than to use the live CD to boot and/or use Supergrub to manually boot to Linux or Windows. I'm now dependent on this CD to properly boot my system EVERY TIME. I've even tried reinstalling GRUB after successfully booting using the CD but grub still refuses to return (now I'm greeted with "Missing Operating System" if I'm not booting using a CD.)
2) WiFi. The only internet access available at my apartment is WiFi. Unfortunately, wifi does not work out of the box on my system. Downloading the third-party drivers to get wifi working REQUIRES an active internet connection (lame catch-22 situation.) So I'm forced to plug into the wired ethernet connection at my workplace instead every time I need to reinstall and restore my internet connection. With so much of the world converting to WiFi, it really makes sense to have access to WiFi after installing from CD.
I don't care if I have to download a much larger CD filled with tons of useless junk; if anyone know of any sort of "expanded version" of the Ubuntu installation cd with a greater variety of WiFi drivers included so I don't have to go through this lame and convoluted procedure just to get my Wifi working every time a reinstall is necessary, I would need it ASAP!

I have Mac OS X on a second hard drive, and GRUB/BURG detects 32-bit and 64-bit versions of OS X. Problem is, my CPU isn't x86-64, so I don't need the x64 version. Also, I have to use the BIOS to select OS X, because GRUB won't boot correctly to OS X anyway. 30_OS_Prober detects them despite all my efforts. Is there any way that I can block /dev/sdb boot entries?I have FreeBSD on /dev/sda3 and GRUB won't autodetect it. It's under 40_Custom, but still won't appear.

I can't figure this out. If i run GUI program (in GNOME) from terminal. It doesn't works the same as if i run it from menus (or shortcut on desktop or panel). Or some times I run it from Alt+F2 method.
What is the difference in this methods?
For example what is the difference if i put this...
metacity --replace
...in terminal or in ALT+F2 dialog window. If I put it in terminal. GNOME doesn't work correctly. If i put it in Alt+F2 dialog window. It works as it should. With no problems.
And what is the difference if i like to run for example FireFox or gnome-control-center from terminal or select it from menus.
If i like to run from terminal. What would be right way to do it?
Because sometimes i get errors in terminal (but GUI works) sometimes after i close terminal GUI program closes to. Sometimes it doesn't. But if i run that program from menus (icons) there is no such problem. It just works. If i put & at the end of program. I can work in terminal. But still all of the above is still true.
