View 5 RepliesI just booted ubuntu from a disk that I burned to try and salvage some files off a hard drive with a failed boot sector (maybe. not sure what the problem is,). Anyway, I can see the files, and I have a large portable hard drive that I can use (a MyPassport 320gig, if I recall correctly). I'm having trouble accessing the drive, and I think it might be because there's something popping up in the task bar that I can't see. Unfortunately, I can't see the task bar! My screen's resolution is off, and I'm having trouble adjusting it. I browsed the various settings and I couldn't figure out any way to change it.
Is there anything I can do? EDIT: Oops! I didn't look into the Monitors options... how embarrassing.
EDIT2: Okay, looks like I can mess about with the resolutions, but all of them still deny me access to the full screen - still can't see the task bar.
I'm using squeeze. I wanted to know how you could determine from the command line in tty1 (or tty2 through tty6) what the resolution was that text was being displayed at. Is there a way? I know that in grub, you're supposed to be able to go to the command line and type vbeinfo. I tried this and got some information, but somehow I think it doesn't always apply to the terminal after the computer has booted up.

I agreed by mistake! and stopped it in the middle of removing. Now when ubuntu boots up, it boots normally: no graphic desktop!!. By crtl+alt+f2 and F7 it switches between graphic and normal. But the desktop does not have anything. Once it boots, it says:kinit: resume from old one /var/.../uuid/. how to know what exactly is deleted? And how to repair it? I tried "sudo apt-get -f install" but it errors that dependencies aren't met

The laptop has no hard drive due to it failing in the past, So I have installed Ubuntu on a 1 TB external Hard disk. While Running the CD "Live", before installing it, The sound was working. But now that it is installed and booted up it does not work. I did a few searches and came across a few command lines that may help you guys figure out what is wrong. As Follows:

View 2 Replies View RelatedIve poked around the forums a bit and cant see anything that addresses this. I have a new install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Netbook remix on an Acer Aspire one. (From a couple of hours ago.) It was able to boot all the way up once. Now after a restart it hangs after selecting Ubuntu from the GRUB menu. If I launch using Recovery mode it gets to a line 2.302026 ata4: Dummy and then hangs. I can boot with the live CD and access the partition that ubuntu is on. I can also boot into windows 7 starter (Blech) from the grub menu. (It is a relatives netbookThey want to try Ubuntu but keep W7 intact.)
I am at a loss of what to do, I would like to simply re-install it again to replace whatever did not get setup right, but I think it will just make a new partition and get really messy.
When I booted up my laptop this morning my top menu bar has been reversed. IE the "Applications, Places, System" links are all on the right hand side of the bar and the "Shutdown, IM, Wlan, etc" buttons on all on the left hand side.Excuse my noobness, but how do I go about correcting this?
View 2 Replies View Relatedin a nutshell im trying to share 2 HDD's in same machine with several windows machines1. auto login so no welcome screen.2. auto mount the drives3. share the drives with/without password 1 is fine, i did resolve issue 2 with "storage device manager" but no matter what i do i cant get it to load correctly as i cant remove the option "mount file system in read only mode" so i cant create/move/delete anything. i did also change the owner for when it mounts off root to my user, but still no avail.and i can share the drives using ubuntu, but i also have samba.not important

Barebones installation. Manually start x with 'startx'. For some weird reason, the resolution randomly sets to either 1024x768 or 800x600. How do I permanently set a resolution?

I haven't done much as far as customization goes, just running the huge.s kernal, adjusted the fstab, but that's about it.It's going to be a week before another video card arrives and I'd like to be able to get to my files and setup.

Using the terminal for sudo grub I then go to >root (hd0,0) and then when I go to <setup (hd0) I get "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"
I have tried substituting /dev/sda in place of (hd0) but then I get "Error 11: Unrecognized device string"
I am currently running Jaunty 9.04 and find the xorg.conf in /etc/X11. I just booted Lucid 10.04 from the Live CD just to take a look at things. I could no longer find xorg.conf any place in the booted file system.

amixer sset Master toggle
For some reason it works fine if the computer is booted while not being muted, but if the computer is booted and is muted, the command will not unmute.
I 've just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and I had a really hard time doing so. I have downloaded and burned the ISO, I restarted in order to install ubuntu and my computer booted from the disk drive, no problem so far.After I chose my language the purple screen with the option "Install Ubuntu" appeared and I highlighted the option and pressed "Enter". THEN, I got a black, empty screen while I was able to listen to my disk drive reading the disk.Everything was OK except for my screen.I thought there was a problem with the ISO or the disk itself. But, I 've tried different CDs and DVDs and I also downloaded the ISO several times. Unfortunately, I had always the same problem: disk drive working (making sound), screen-->BLACK-EMPTY. I was about to give up hope when I decided to turn on my desk lamp because it was getting dark. I was working on my last attempt and after I, once again, pressed "Enter" on the "Install Ubuntu" option I got the same dark screen as always but this time, because of the lamp, I saw that Ubuntu was actually being installed but the screen did not have any light. I managed to install it properly using my lamp to see what's going on on my screen but it's obvious that I can't possibly work that way. SO, how do I make my screen light come back so I can enjoy my new OS???
Note: My screen is working perfectly with windows so, it cannot be a hardware problem.
I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

The reason I don't want to install it outright is that I didn't backup my files, so my plan was to do the backup with live debian. Yet, for some reason, Debian's "File viewer" doesn't "see" my HD files. That is, my disk is listed as a mounted device and I can see all its directories ("Downloads", "My Documents" and so on) but they all seem to be empty.
So I try from the terminal, where "dir" on /Downloads effectively returns the list of all the files I remember I had there. So on my first attempt I try to copy one single file to /home, that is,

I need to check RAM on a server located in a data center several hundred miles away. So, I can't just walk over and boot to CD to run memtest86. Is it safe to run this while booted into the OS? Does anyone know of a knoppix pxe boot image? I can network boot to something...I just don't know what to network boot to.

I have a Toshiba NB305 on which I've installed 10.04 and then 10.10. I set it up to dual boot windows, but windows has never booted. I get a quick blue screen, and then it goes back to the grub menu. Ubuntu boots just fine. I occasionally have reason to boot into Windows. So it would be nice to get it working. Here's the output from boot_info_script.

However, the clients are not diskless and I want to take advantage of this by using a local cache of the nfs-mounted filesystem. I'm using fs-cache and the cachefilesd package for this purpose. Of course I want to cache the whole root file system and in order for that to work, the filesystem must be mounted with the "fsc" mount option.
Hence, in my fstab I have the following entry:

However, I can easily verify that the fsc mount option is not being used when mounting the root system:

If I mount an nfs share manually after booting then it will use the fsc flag without any problems. However, I'd rather not try to remount the root file system, even if that might work.I also learned that there's a special kernel option called "rootflags" that specifies the mount options for the root file system, so I tested modifying the kernel boot parameters as follows:

Update: According to the manpage for initramfs-tools, you should be able to specify the NFS mount options as a kernel parameter using NFSSERVER:NFSPATH:NFSOPTS, but I suspect this is not correct -- when I test it only works if I use the format NFSSERVER:NFSPATH,NFSOPTS. Perhaps the manpage needs to be updated?

I'm on 11.04, im on a macbook 6,2 i7. The wifi worked when i booted from cd but now it doesnt work once i installed.
I'm attempting to triple boot Windows 7, Mac OS X, and Ubuntu 11.04 on non-Mac hardware. Chameleon is my primary bootloader, which is supposed to chainboot into grub2, but all I get when I choose the Linux boot option is a black screen with blinking cursor. If I try to boot Ubuntu while holding shift, I get the word GRUB, followed by a space and a blinking cursor. grub2 is installed to the Ubuntu partition, and attempts to reinstall it there or to the MBR from a LiveCD result in errors. The MBR and GPT partition tables are synchronized. How do I go about making Ubuntu bootable, without breaking my other two operating systems (or at least leaving them recoverable)?
I built a new desktop computer.The goal was to triple boot the system with Windows 7, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and Ubuntu 11.04. This endeavor has been significantly more complicated than I originally expected, but with the of a forum-goer at InsanelyMac.com, I've managed to get pretty far with a complex installation process. I've attempted to get Ubuntu running using two methods, neither of them achieving what I'm hoping. Both methods follow.
In the first method, I install Mac OS X using a specially designed install CD that boots into the Snow Leopard installation DVD. The disk is partitioned to have a FAT partition, followed by a Mac OS X journaled partition, ending in a second FAT partition. Mac OS is then installed to the second partition. The Windows boot CD is then used to format the first FAT partition as NTFS, which Windows 7 is then installed to.
As I'm sure you know, this installs Windows Boot Manager. Then I boot into OS X using the boot CD mentioned earlier, and install Chameleon, a bootloader specifically designed for Hackintosh systems, and (supposedly) capable of booting into all three operating systems I'm trying to work with. Finally, I divide and reformat the remaining FAT partition into an ext4 partition and a swap partition, and install Ubuntu to that ext4 partition, with the bootloader installed to the same partition. This will break the Windows bootloader, as now the MBR and GPT tables are no longer syncronized. Ubuntu is also unbootable; attempting to chainload into grub2 leaves me at a black screen with a blinking cursor. The former problem is solved by booting into a LiveCD and installing and running gptsync. Windows is now bootable, but Ubuntu remains in 'limbo'.
The second method I attempted is very similar, but deviates in the last few steps. After installing Windows, I instead install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, as I thought I might have fewer bootloader issues with that distribution (don't ask why; it was a lucky hunch).This breaks Windows Boot Manager, but this time grub2 throws me into the grub> prompt.I can boot into Ubuntu just fine using the set root/linux/initrd/boot commands, but my motherboard's Ethernet port is not detected by the OS, so I can't directly download and run gptsync. Once I do manage to run it, though, Windows is then also repaired.
Unfortunately, since I can't access the Internet, I can't do a distribution upgrade that way. Trying to upgrade from the recent release's LiveCD...well...doesn't upgrade, just overwrites. So I get the same black screen with blinking cursor problem. I've tried reinstalling grub2 through a LiveCD using grub-install both using the --root-directory flag and the chroot method.

Question is: Is it possible to install the new OS on the partition that now contains Ubuntu, without disturbing my Windows Vista partition? (I just need Vista for occasional use of MagicJack- otherwise I'd gladly just wipe the whole disk)
Can I just boot my Ubuntu live CD and run Disk Utility and delete the Ubuntu partition? (I prefer to use GUI rather than CLI).
I recently started experimenting with Ubuntu 8.10 and I've spent the last week mostly getting the HDD partitions and desktop to my liking so I have not installed many actual programs yet. As of this last Saturday ( 11-29-2008 ) my Keyboard (PS/2 connection) worked fine whether booted into Ubuntu or XP and worked in grub as well. I discovered on Sunday the 30th that when booted into XP my keyboard no longer worked(but my USB mouse works). The keyboard still works fine in Grub and in Ubuntu but no amount of keypressing works when booted into XP. My device manager indicates the driver has been corrupted or something (Code 39 error) and indicates the driver files are i8042prt.sys and kbdclass.sys.
Here's a list of the things I've tried so far:Tried swapping in a USB keyboard; I've tried updating the drivers in Device Manager; Tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers in Device Manager; I tried the "uninstall driver, shutdown, unplug keyboard, reboot, shutdown, plug keyboard back in and reboot" routine; deleting those two files and letting them be rebuilt at boot; using the recovery console to copy them from the XP install CD to the System32/Drivers folder and as a last resort I tried a repair install only to find when asked to enter the CoA code the keyboard still did not work.
I obviously borked something on the Ubuntu side that's causing a conflicting with those drivers on the XP side but I'm at a loss as to what that might be. The only thing I can remember installing since the last time the keyboard worked was maybe Wine, but for sure I did a test install of my Baldur's Gate+ToSC disc and I attempted to install Daemon Tools Lite too. I've since uninstalled those two programs and even Wine itself without results. The only other thing I can think of is that I've been messing around with the /fstab file a lot trying to get all my drives/partitions to mount up at boot like I want but I don't know how that would impact the keyboard drivers.
When I boot my computer I get this message: Warning Pc video resolution is out of range Change setting to recommended resolution 1280x1024 @60mh So I hit ctrl alt f1 I typed in Sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Nothing happens. It's been very frustrating because with everything that I've looked up it says that it's suppose to guide me through something. I desperately need my computer for school.
