Programming :: GCC New Versions Compatibility With Old Ones
Apr 8, 2010
As a newbie for linux, I am really confused about gcc version. Aren't the new ones compatible the old ones? But online there is always someone says ,he should install a old suitalbe one for his IDE. I am really confused. If it needs a long words to express the reason clearly, a link or some books you recommend is a good answer.

Why many Linux distros are trying to use always the latest versions of the libraries and don't save the old libraries for compatibility? I mean, I can see libtiff for example, i can found a libtiff.so.5 on my /usr/lib, but doesn't store a libtiff.so.4 or 3 just for binary applications or games. For this example, I need libtiff.so.4 for uplink.
That should happen too on the old version of sims for linux, some ID games or others. What's wrong with storing old libraries? PD: Yay, my first post on 3 years!

I am currently running CentOS 5.3 which includes the gcc 4.1.2 compiler. I need to compile a Realtek 8139 NIC driver for VMware ESXi.
The GPL sources and documentation from VMware show that the source file 8139too.c needs to be modified and re-compiled to run with the small busy-box ESXi kernel, and it *very* specifically states that gcc 3.2 is to be used.
I have the gcc 3.2 rpm but am afraid to force it on/over the 4.1.2 install. To be honest, I have not even checked dependencies yet.
Where do I start to get both versions of the compiler on the same box without them stepping all over each other.

I have a page which is going to be internationalized, and available in more languages. It contains PHP scripts to load, let's say, current user's data from database and the internationalized content itself, like "Welcome user" message. The problem for me is the fact, that internationalized content is not continual, and it's all over the page mixed with php scripts.
I don't want to use eval(). I've got 2 , they are, however, not good enough. 1. One file per language version, with scripts included - there will be many languages, so there would have to be many files with redundant data. Also if I wanted to change structure of script, I would have to change it in all pages. 2. Load international data from db, while scripts are on the page - not sure about good database structure I mean, how would I get the right content from database? (content would be split into rows, columns, or something?)

I'm not to clear on the difference between LTS versions and other versions, but think I may want to go with LTS. Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct given the following situation: I have some very cool, but very expensive software installed with a group license from my school, a school which I am not going to be attending for too much longer. So I want to go as long as possible without reinstalling Ubuntu, because once the product is licensed it will be licensed until I reinstall Ubuntu (or I uninstall the program). So I think this is going to require me keep the Ubuntu version I install as long as possible.
So in this case, should I go with 10.04LTS or should I just install Natty Narwhal and keep that as long as possible? It looks like 10.04LTS will be "supported" longer, but I'm not exactly clear on all that "supported" entails. Presumable it means security and software updates will be available for 10.04LTS for much longer than 11.x versions? So I'm thinking I should go with 10.04LTS
Is my thinking correct in going with 10.04LTS? Edit: It was pointed out that this would be against my contractual agreements. Which I suppose is probably true.

I have an e-machines flat pannel monitor and I often find it's not supported. That, or I have to use 800x600 resolution. I'm on XP right now on a compaq and I have to settle with 1024x768. Which is stretched out. I also use a linksys USB adapter for internet and it must work with-out effort on my part. It works with the latest versions of ubuntu, puppy, Damn Small Linux and a few others. Are there any distros that might work for me? And by the way, I get the correct resolution (I can't remember what it is) with my e-machines W3052.

I just got an update notification to install 11.04. Before updating, I just want to verify and see if anyone has run into any problems before I give it a go.
I have a MacBook Pro 6,2, currently with 4 Gigs of Ram, but I'm planning on upgrading that to 8 Gigs. I have read of trouble with some MacBooks not booting Ubuntu with more than 6 Gigs.
I was wondering if 11.04 fixes anything from the previous versions... The trackpad, being the main thing.

I'm going to install Ubuntu 64bit, currently run 10.10 32bit. I'm thinking about going back to 10.04 in combination with a previous version of wine(maybe 1.2?) to get some games working again.
Do any of you know if games are still working well with this combination? I'm looking to play WoW at some point, Oblivion + Expansion/Mods, any FPS available.

The one thing that keeps my XP partition alive is MS Word. Using both packages at a far more basic level than you guys by the sounds of it, but still the formatting is a nightmare. I've been using and trying out a number of distros over the past year or so and everything I need is right here. Its just so annoying theres one thing that stops me converting all together. I could write a perfect essay up in Open Office and take it into college. Open it up on their MS Word and its all goes to pot. Everything all over the place, and I have to realign margins, paragraphs etc etc. Regardless to file format its saved in, I've tried them all!

I'm in computer sales and I have a customer that wants to replace all his macs and windows computers with ubuntu. I don't know anything about linux but I heard that there is a strong community behind ubuntu He's asked me to send him an evaluation unit so that he can test it out with ubuntu and see how well it works. I personally support his idea of going with reliable, bare minimum spec computers to do a whole overhaul. But I don't want him to deal with compatibility issues on a regular basis..I was looking at the Dell D620-D630, what are your thoughts on these machines running ubuntu?

I am an activist. I am becoming concerned with security on line because I have posted videos exposing SERIOUS corruption within the government at all levels. With all the recent claims of executive authority in the name of cyber security and govt eavesdropping I am interested in finding a more secure op sys. Windows is to vulnerable. I have an HP7845 Sound Blaster 64 Sound card. Radeon 9800 video card. I have a large volume of videos and media/research reports I cant afford to lose. How easy is the conversion? And also concerned with software. Will programs work the same or at all?Is my equipment even compatible with other opsystems. Is there a risk of glitches that would curtail my efforts after attempting the change. I KNOW NOTHING about other systems hell I can barely run XP. However I would hate to lose files or go through a months long debugging venture.

I'm looking to run a small, cheaper sort of "video server" that would record video from a Panasonic HDC-SD9 over USB. Does anybody have any idea how I could get this to work? These are basically my questions:
1) What OS is good for just recording, not editing video? CLI or GUI, I don't care.
2) Does anybody know about compatibility of the Linux kernel with the HDC-SD9 over USB?
Details:
I would want to record full 1080p/i.
I can use any type of Linux-based OS. CLI or GUI.
I would be recording for long, uninterrupted periods of time (8-24 hour blocks).
I would be using (I think) a 3-4TB RAID 0.

I have question(s) about file formats and line endings and would like to know how you manage this. Here is the thing: I am sharing files with a Windows user and we run into some problems of formatting: He send me files in UTF-8 and with the Windows line ending and when I open them, modify them and send them back, he got them with the unix file ending and in UTF-8 or sometimes ANSII. I know that for example in gedit (as most of the files are .htm files that I modify and send them back to him or upload directly on the net after modification) when you use "saving as" you can change the line ending and also UTF-8 or else, But the thing is that it is pretty time consuming to do a "save as" with an existing file and change the attributes when you have to deal with dozens of files. So I searched on the web and heard about tofrodos, which I installed and worked well besides that it only changes the line ending. So I was wondering: how you deal with those formats/line ending compatibility issue and how you avoid loosing time because of this but still manage to get your fellow windows users shraing files with youif you know command line tools that would enable me to modify the line ending and the formats of file(s) (also pretty basic but I didnīt find a way to check/display those attributes from the command line)tell me more about the web, as it should be the same problem (and even worst as the are a lost of unix devices acting as servers) but still windows users donīt have any problem displaying pages with are documents stored with their own line endings and formatting.

we recently had to upgrade all machines from 10.3 and 11.1 to 11.2 because of software compatibility issues.
Now that 11.2 is up and running I keep having very annoying problems:
.Xauthority
User home directories are mounted with NFS. When trying to use kdesu (e.g. to start YAST) lock files (.Xauthority-*) are created and the program fails. The pnly solution is the remove the files by hand and try again. Sometimes it will work and swomtimes it won't. Interestingly that only happens on the local machine; ssh -X some.other.machine works fine.
