View 3 Repliesi recently installed F11 and i'm pretty new to linux. When I browse the net most images will start to load and then turn completely black and stay that way. I've searched and searched for info on this but can't find anything. I've made sure i had all the plugins like flash and everything and it still won't work. i'm using Firefox 3.5 beta 4.

Is this a setting in openoffice?
In Fedora-14, how do I set the start-up screen to solid black-splash instead of the light-blue?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to set up permissions for matlab (at least I think permissions is the problem). I haven't been able to find any conclusive instructions how to set permissions and the advice I see are often confusing or contradictory. I have installed matlab (64-bit version) using root account as that was recommended by the installer and everything seems fine except for the error message I got after installation:
[root@localhost User]# /mnt/dvd/install
The following messages were written to standard error while running 'xsetup' the X Window System version of 'install'.
xsetup: Unable to load required font.
Warning: This program is an suid-root program or is being run by the root user. The full text of the error or warning message cannot be safely formatted in this environment. You may get a more descriptive message by running the program as a non-root user or by removing the suid bit on the executable.
Warning: Cannot convert string "%s" to type %s
Check the content of the installation output file (backend):
/usr/local/lib64/matlab/install_matlab.out
Error messages found:
Warning: Permission Problem With MATLAB Files!
| Checked some files in your MATLAB root directory. These are bad:|
-r--r--r--. (not world readable) - ./toolbox/matlab/general/diary.m .....
Can I set up permissions to make it work afterwards? If so - how? I see the error message talking about the permissions being -r--r--r-- which I guess is only readable to all users. But should I set permissions to folders, executables or both? Was there anything I could have done before installation to make this work? I'm rather new to linux though I feel quite comfortable to work with the terminal. My system is fedora 13.
I found this excellent resource: [URL]. Though I'm still not sure how to set up permissions and I'm a bit hesitant as I don't want to create any security holes in my system. Would it be enough for me to give executable rights for my user to the program files in usr/local/bin? Now that I look at the permissions it seems I already have permission (through others...?) to the mentioned files.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently work at a lab which uses Matlab to do calculations that take weeks. We're having problems monitoring Matlab outside of the lab. Specifically, what we would like would be to have Matlab run on a linux computer in the lab and be able to check up on it every so often. We've tried playing around with X server and are going to try VNC when there's time.

Any one use octave while taking a matlab class? I am currently in MATLAB but cant offord the software and there are no trials of it. The studernt edition is still expensive and i need to save money. However after running the installation script I receive the following error message:

It seems to be a problem with libXext.so.6, however, I do have libXext library installed in my computer. The name of the package I have installed is:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed MATLAB R2009a in my laptop (Fedora 14 x86-64), the installation was succesful but when I run MATLAB (in a console), appears a message: error while loading shared libraries: libut.so: cannot enable executable stack as shared object requires: Permission denied
I find a "solution", execute in a terminal: execstack -c libut.so
I used several times with differents libraries that I needed, but I run MATLAB in a terminal, MATLAB starts in a terminal, only a prompt ">>" and nothing.
I assumed this had to be a FAQ, but after hours of searching, how to do this on FC11, but that didn't work with the yum on FC10. I don't need a huge list, but at least the basics (ld-linux.so, and I imagine the C++ compatibility libs).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI booted to the live distro of FC13 on my flash drive. The wireless card isnt present. Searching the internet i can only find a few posts lamenting the incompatibility.
How do i check whether the hardware is supported? The card is a DW1520 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card
I have an ATI Radeon HD5750 video card. I have had a lot of problems with this card in Fedora 13, as I have written about in these three threads:
[URL]
To sum up, my problems are:
1. When running the proprietary driver, Fedora becomes cripplingly slow.
2. When running the open-source driver, video playback is unreliable. Video players crash if maximized.
3. I cannot connect my HDMI TV to my computer.
4. When running the open-source driver, my .xsession-errors file sometimes grows explosively.
Right now I am using the open-source driver because of problem #1. Last December I was told that there were new drivers coming out "soon" that might help. Does anyone know if anything has changed since then? Are there new drivers that should work? If not: Can I improve compatibility by changing to another version of Linux? Either upgrading to Fedora 14, downgrading to Fedora 12 or trying another distribution?
I am having issues getting a 32-bit environment to run something on my computer. Most people think this is a lame game, but I rather enjoy it and would like to continue playing it on this computer. I am running F11 x86_64 on an AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ Black Edition (OC'd at 3.4 in case anyone is wondering). I TRIED running yum to get the shared library referenced in the following message, but it gave conflicts on installation. Is there a way around this, such as installing a separate environment directory for just this game? Or is it just a lost cause?
[Code]....
The new problem is highlighted in the terminal output. I've searched the web for this issue, and it seems to be caused by an older lib included with glibc.i586, though I don't know how to verify or correct this. I tried a lot of things before finding this list.
How's the X2 in terms of compatibility with F12. I see some deals that tempt me to pick up a cheap small desktop and those desktops use that AMD chip (along side an ATI Radeon) I prefer sticking with intel and maybe build my own, but I am curious about how AMD holds up in performance and/or compatibility with Fedora

I have no experience with anything but standard Wine, and I haven't even used that in quite some time. Crossover and Cedega are both built off of the Wine codebase, and they both cost money. can POL do everything that wine can do? in other words, do i need to install them both or POL will do good alone?
I'm a bit perplexed on this issue. I searched through Google looking for similar issues and can't seem to find one that quite fits and I was wondering if someone else has heard of this happening.
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on a friend's Dell Inspiron 1501 to replace the entirely screwed up Windows Vista that was on it. The install process went without flaw or issue. Everything worked perfectly out of the box. My issue comes when I try to copy files from my terabyte external onto the computer (the files she had backed up from her vista install). Files larger than about 300MB cause the computer to freeze up solid. The only thing that works is the power button to force shutdown. There's no mouse... nothing. This made me think there was a hardware issue but...
The external drive has no issues on any computer other than this one so I'm inclined to think the Dell is causing the issues. I ran Ubuntu's drive test and it reported no errors, and MemTest 86 comes up with no errors.
So, I'm looking for some educated guesses. If Ubuntu can handle installs and lengthy updates with no problem, but then connecting an external USB HDD and copying over files causes it to freeze up tighter than I've ever seen Ubuntu freeze before... could a faulty USB port cause this? Motherboard? Ubuntu itself? I'm installing Ubuntu from CD.
I was looking into getting some solid state drives for the 1st time. I have always used Seagate traditional SATA drives for my home systems but I think I would like to try something new and that has much better performance. Do you guys know if I will see any performance gains and or issues using SSD on Linux? I run Arch and Debian Linux in general...

Chceck that you have enough disk space and rerun the installer."
I did have checked the disk space which is much more than enough. I have also changed few different disks that are way more than enough as well, about 5GB at least, but this error still popped out when it runs to 18%.
Is there a way to make the background to an editor e.g. gedit transparent without affecting text's transparency? Is there any other program that supports this?

It gets past the toshiba screen and the mint logo shows up like normal, but then I get what I think is an error message. I can't be sure though because the screen is not showing a solid picture. If I hit escape, I get another similar screen. If I hit escape again the screen goes blank and I can no longer get it to do anything. I'm new to Linux and not much of a computer wiz.

I'm having a really annoying problem with disc activity on my desktop system. Basically, if anything is writing a large amount of data to the hard drive (say, 10MB or over), the machine basically freezes solid. The mouse goes jittery (you move it and it takes a second then moves in one big leap).
For instance, if I try to image a USB hard drive to a file:
# dd if=/dev/sdh of=usbdrive_dump bs=1G
Effectively this works in two portions: it reads 1GB of data to RAM, then blats it out into a file. The machine is perfectly responsive while the USB drive is getting thrashed, but locks solid when the internal SATA drives are in use. Writing to USB HDDs doesn't seem to have the same effect -- I can copy 1GB files to/from them all day long and the machine is perfectly happy.
