General :: Website Compatibility Checks For IE/ Printer With No Driver ?
Jun 4, 2010Currently have just Linux on my main computer (brother built it for me, knew I wanted to try Linux, so just put Ubuntu on).
Old computer (very old, 256MB Ram etc) runs Windows 2000 very slowly, currently will only start up in safe mode (not sure whether this is because it's not currently attached to the router or printer, or whether more serious).
I'd like to put linux (qimo, DSL or puppy probably) on the old computer so my 3-year-old can use it instead of demanding the penguin game (tuxpaint) whenever I want to use my computer!
So, wondering whether to try and shrink the windows partition or whether to just go for linux only. That computer was second-hand as well, so I don't have the windows disks.
The two things I'm worried about:
1) sometimes do some web design, and how would I check whether IE will display my pages without strange problems 'cos it doesn't follow the standards...
2) printing out photos at short notice: husband picked the printer so we're lumbered with a canon pixma MX700. It can do basic printing but won't communicate with linux to do photo quality (no linux drivers...) If I have plenty of time I use a photo printing service such as photobox.
Any thoughts how I can get round these problems so I can just jettison windows without worry? I don't have the spare cash to buy windows 7 or whatever to run in a virtual box...
General :: Get Berkeley DB With 1.85 Compatibility Mode?
Jan 9, 2010I am trying to install gnome-bin 1.4.2 from source but it is telling be I need my Berkeley DB to have 1.85 compatibility mode - how do I do this? I've tried both the libdb4.2-dev package (which give the error below) and the libdb1-dev package (which tells me I am missing DB support all together).

Aug 10, 2010I am an activist. I am becoming concerned with security on line because I have posted videos exposing SERIOUS corruption within the government at all levels. With all the recent claims of executive authority in the name of cyber security and govt eavesdropping I am interested in finding a more secure op sys. Windows is to vulnerable. I have an HP7845 Sound Blaster 64 Sound card. Radeon 9800 video card. I have a large volume of videos and media/research reports I cant afford to lose. How easy is the conversion? And also concerned with software. Will programs work the same or at all?Is my equipment even compatible with other opsystems. Is there a risk of glitches that would curtail my efforts after attempting the change. I KNOW NOTHING about other systems hell I can barely run XP. However I would hate to lose files or go through a months long debugging venture.

The above seems vague explanation, even if you put a middle layer this middle layer becomes GPL and anything above as well.

General :: How To Enable 32-bit Binary Compatibility On Linux Mint 11 X64
Jul 6, 2011I've recently installed x64 Linux Mint 11, basically Ubuntu Natty. Since the install I've found that 32-bit applications which used to run on my Ubuntu system are rejected by my Mint 11 system. When I use the 'file' utility to check the binary, it correctly identifies it as a 32-bit elf, but I can't invoke the application. I've tried starting it from bash and os.system a la python, to no avail, so I suspect that it must have something to do with 32-bit binary compatibility mode but my knowledge of that sub-system and how to enable it is limited, can anyone assist?

May 11, 2011Why many Linux distros are trying to use always the latest versions of the libraries and don't save the old libraries for compatibility? I mean, I can see libtiff for example, i can found a libtiff.so.5 on my /usr/lib, but doesn't store a libtiff.so.4 or 3 just for binary applications or games. For this example, I need libtiff.so.4 for uplink.
That should happen too on the old version of sims for linux, some ID games or others.What's wrong with storing old libraries? PD: Yay, my first post on 3 years!

Nov 29, 2010We've had reports of websites that don't work with Linux. Most could be used by setting a suitable UserAgent string but this one is extreme.
BSNL is India's national telecommunications utility and ISP. The same one that apparently injected HTTP packets to take newly authenticated users to one of their advertising sites as described in this LQ thread.
Now they have introduced a new site where ADSL customers can review their usage. A useful facility when the cost of exceeding monthly transfer is punitive and average incomes are low. But it is not useful for everyone. It is not useful for Linux users. The currently supported OS and browser combinations are "Internet Explorer on PC" and "Safari and FireFox on Mac".
I tried with Firefox, Opera and SeaMonkey on Linux. In Firefox I tried a variety of UserAgent strings but none of them got the logon page to work.
Technically speaking, how can this be happening? If Firefox works on Mac (IDK which versions of either) why would it not work on Linux? Where/how might the OS get involved in a browser rendering HTTP/HTTPS data?
Here's how the three browsers behaveFirefox with JavaScript turned off: the site displays "Scripting is used to manage data interactions between the Siebel server/Web Server and the User Interface. This requires JavaScript to be enabled in the web browser". Firefox with JavaScript enabled and SeaMonkey: both display the URL SWEHo=selfcare.sdc.bsnl.co.in but go into an infinite wait. Opera doesn't display anything.

Sep 29, 2010I just bought the Barnes & Noble Nook eReader for my wife's birthday and a requirement is to log on to the Nook website and establish an account. Using her Fedora 13 64bit desktop and Firefox she repeatedly tried to access the website www.nook.com to create an account, however consistently got the server not found message. Even using the Firefox addon User Agent Switcher and turning off NoScript did not correct this.
When we switched over to the WinXP install and Firefox we were able to access the website no problem. Anyone else unable to access that website via linux?

I can access it successfully by typing on the address bar http://localhost, 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.150 from the local computer server and the site loads normally with graphic. I thought it might be using flash or something rerouting the connection through something other than port 80 (or 8080 for the proxy) but not sure if that is the issue.I just used a fake login and password but instead of giving me the incorrect password error the page just hangs.
