Ubuntu :: How To Get The Version For Game Compatibility
Nov 30, 2010
I'm going to install Ubuntu 64bit, currently run 10.10 32bit. I'm thinking about going back to 10.04 in combination with a previous version of wine(maybe 1.2?) to get some games working again.
Do any of you know if games are still working well with this combination? I'm looking to play WoW at some point, Oblivion + Expansion/Mods, any FPS available.
This questions pertains mainly to building a brand new GNU toolchain on one machine for deployment on fs of another machine that has no toolchain installed. I understand the machine on which GNU toolchain is going to be built as the 'build' machine. I understand the machine on which GNU toolchain is going to be deployed as the 'host' machine. I understand the machine on which the code generated by the new GNU toolchain is going to be run as the 'target' machine.
Q1.) Is there a fixed 'rule', 'matrix' or 'table' somewhere which tells me exactly which versions of 'binutils' and 'libc' are required by a particular version of GCC? I.e. something along the lines of:
- gcc ver.'k' can be built using gcc ver.'m'(or later) with binutils ver.'i' and libc ver. 'j' - gcc ver.'k' will operate with binutils ver.'t' and libc ver.'r'(or later)
Is there some 'rule of thumb' / 'heuristics' giving me the above version requirements for the building and operating GCC, or is this information somehow implied or derived systematically. Where can I find more about the above?
Q2) I assume that the libraries have no dependencies on any underlying software other than the system calls provided by the kernel. Furthermore it appears that the libraries are not too sensitive about the kernel version they run on (I found this out from experience). Therefore I could build the libraries on some build machine and place them on the bare naked newly set up host file system without regard to any other prerequisite SW components?
Q3) During operation, do GCC and its various components place system calls directly to the kernel or via library calls (or both)? In other words I am trying to understand conceptually if GCC requires 'Glibc' for its own operation or not?
Q4) During operation, do the 'binutils' components place system calls directly to the kernel or via library calls (or both)? In other words I am trying to understand conceptually if the 'binutils' require 'Glibc' for their operation or not? ( Of course it is clear to me that when GCC is operating it will need libraries and headers to resolve object references in the target code it produces, but that would be a >different< question).
I'm currently an user of OpenSuse, newer version of Suse don't support some of the hardware that I use and previous version of Suse will cease to have support in a few months. So I'm considering other versions of Linux and Ubuntu comes to mind. So I like to know if Ubuntu (Desktop 32 bits) supports this devices:
NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro (including 3d support) Wacom Intuos 2 SERIAL tablet Epson ActionScanner II PARALLEL
So i am running Kubuntu with kde4 on my laptop. The game Wesnoth recently got updated to 1.8 and when i go to kpackagekit it does not show wesnoth 1.8 it only shows 1.6.5 or whatever. This may have something to do with my repository (<----- Know very little about),

Edit: Though, if you let us know exactly what software (except for Format Factory) you have problems running in Wine, I'm sure the community can give you some proper Linux native alternatives. another major compatibility issue with wine is that i can't install canon pixma ip1300 printer drivers. no idea of installing printer in fedora.

I have no experience with anything but standard Wine, and I haven't even used that in quite some time. Crossover and Cedega are both built off of the Wine codebase, and they both cost money. can POL do everything that wine can do? in other words, do i need to install them both or POL will do good alone?
I'm a freelance science editor; I edit dissertations and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals primarily. My clients almost exclusively use Microsoft Word. Any word processing tool that I use has to be compatible with MS Word, particularly "Track Changes" version control. Has OpenOffice (or another open source word processing software) achieved this?
This game is Java based. After rebooting the game works, but on ending the game several notification boxes remain. If these boxes are not closed in the reverse order that the game opened them, it is no longer possible to close them. Only by killing the Java processes can these notifications be made to close. Also after playing the game, even if all these notifications are closed it is many times necessary to kill the Java process(es) in order to get the game to load again at a later time. I am currently using Slackware 1.30, but a similar problem has existed in several of the past releases.
Do you know any game engines or game studios that can make adventure games, for instance in the style of Myst (1st person) or in the style of old Sierra games (3rd person), like King's Quest, Space Quest, etc.?I've seen AGI Studio, but it is too old, I'd like to use more modern graphics (although there is no need for 3D).
I have an e-machines flat pannel monitor and I often find it's not supported. That, or I have to use 800x600 resolution. I'm on XP right now on a compaq and I have to settle with 1024x768. Which is stretched out. I also use a linksys USB adapter for internet and it must work with-out effort on my part. It works with the latest versions of ubuntu, puppy, Damn Small Linux and a few others. Are there any distros that might work for me? And by the way, I get the correct resolution (I can't remember what it is) with my e-machines W3052.
I just got an update notification to install 11.04. Before updating, I just want to verify and see if anyone has run into any problems before I give it a go.
I have a MacBook Pro 6,2, currently with 4 Gigs of Ram, but I'm planning on upgrading that to 8 Gigs. I have read of trouble with some MacBooks not booting Ubuntu with more than 6 Gigs.
I was wondering if 11.04 fixes anything from the previous versions... The trackpad, being the main thing.
Ok, so I want to install the ubuntu UNR on my desktop. is that possible ?
I have tried various times to install it on my laptop in it just stuck every single time at the end of installation. so I thought there might be a problem with compatibility for computers other than netbooks. My laptop is a thoshiba satellite a300 series laptop, with a core2due t5750 intel processor and 3GB DDR2 667Mhz (i'll post full specification if required ). so now I want to install it on my desktop, Dual-Core intel cpu e5300 2GB of ram @ 800Mhz Asrok G41M-VS2 motherboard
Are ubuntu- 64 bit packages I am using on my core 2 duo desktop compatible with core i3? I am thinking of buying new core i3 laptop as I am moving to new city .. I will not be having fast Internet access ( GPRS ), So I will be using the downloaded deb packages (In var/cache/apt) to install softwares I need whenever I format my laptop ( I experiment a lot, So I format a lot )
What is the current status of HTTPS Everywhere add-on for FF? I understand it was previously compatible, but it is not now (I am running 3.6.11 on LL). This article on firesheep has me a bit freaked.
The one thing that keeps my XP partition alive is MS Word. Using both packages at a far more basic level than you guys by the sounds of it, but still the formatting is a nightmare. I've been using and trying out a number of distros over the past year or so and everything I need is right here. Its just so annoying theres one thing that stops me converting all together. I could write a perfect essay up in Open Office and take it into college. Open it up on their MS Word and its all goes to pot. Everything all over the place, and I have to realign margins, paragraphs etc etc. Regardless to file format its saved in, I've tried them all!
I'm in computer sales and I have a customer that wants to replace all his macs and windows computers with ubuntu. I don't know anything about linux but I heard that there is a strong community behind ubuntu He's asked me to send him an evaluation unit so that he can test it out with ubuntu and see how well it works. I personally support his idea of going with reliable, bare minimum spec computers to do a whole overhaul. But I don't want him to deal with compatibility issues on a regular basis..I was looking at the Dell D620-D630, what are your thoughts on these machines running ubuntu?
I have software that requires libstdc++.so.5 and 9.10 and 10.04 both only come with libstdc++.so.6. I've searched for a compat-libstdc++-5 to no avail. Does anyone have an suggestion on how to find/install this package?
I have found the wonder that is FLAC and am encoding CD's. My system at work is locked down so I found CoolPlayer++ to play FLAC which I intended to play from a DVD I created. I have collected my FLAC into collections that I want to burn to DVD for playback. So, I burn DVD in Ubuntu (9.04), files look and work great from within Linux. When I use in Windows all the folders and files are 8.3 format (major issue is that .FLAC are now .FLA and not recognized by CoolPlayer). However, if I use Windows compatibility then the FLAC filenames are truncated to 64 char (many are longer since they have track number, and full song names). Is there a way to keep longer than 64 and use in Windows?
I am new to ubuntu server. Currently I am running Ubuntu 9.10 server edition. I installed tomcat6 downloaded from apache site and started. But can't run the war file and cant even shut it down. I am running tomcat with default port 8080 and 8005 for shutdown port. I have reinstalled tomcat over and over again. Ubuntu desktop version is running on my pc, everything fine there.
I've just recently downloaded Lubuntu 10.04 and tried it. It was nice because it was light on my machine. My only problem is, is that it doesn't have a graphical menu editor, and I don't know how to edit menus other than using GUIs.
I've read something about alacarte-menu-editor being able to be used in Lubuntu. I would just like to confirm if it DOES work with Lubuntu.
whether all 2TB external hard disks will run on ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)? I was under the impression that Seagate and Western Digital would, but the store where I went to buy it told me they won't. I really need to buy an external hard disk as I'm running out of the space
I've just installed gNatty 11.04 on my machine the first thing I've done is to update via the terminal:Quote:sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgradeAll seemed fine but when I've gone to restart it gets stuck at this message while booting:Quote:Stopping System V runlevel compatibility've reinstalled but the problem is still occurring,
NOTE! To use previews you need to activate KDE Compability in compiz settings manager and under KDE Compability check "Support Plasma Thumbnails". (Alternatively you can use kwin as window manager instead of compiz. That will give you previews for minimized windows as well.)
How is this done? I have CompizConfig Settings Manager and I can't find kde anywhere.
This AirLink101 AWLL5088 Wireless N 150 Ultra Mini USB Adapter would work on the 11.04 os. Meaning that I can access the internet, because I don't think it has a broadcom driver but realtek one.
As a newbie for linux, I am really confused about gcc version. Aren't the new ones compatible the old ones? But online there is always someone says ,he should install a old suitalbe one for his IDE. I am really confused. If it needs a long words to express the reason clearly, a link or some books you recommend is a good answer.
I have installed Centos 5.6 (32 bit) in a virtual machine and would like to know if it is possible to update it to a 64 bit installation (probably I will also need to move to another version of the vm player too) or if there is any kind of compatibility lib(s)
Can anybody tell me if there is a game similar to WOW for ubuntu 9.10? if there is I would like the source code so i can download it from the terminal.
