OpenSUSE :: Upgrade All Machines From 10.3 And 11.1 To 11.2 Because Of Software Compatibility
Apr 6, 2010
we recently had to upgrade all machines from 10.3 and 11.1 to 11.2 because of software compatibility issues.
Now that 11.2 is up and running I keep having very annoying problems:
.Xauthority
User home directories are mounted with NFS. When trying to use kdesu (e.g. to start YAST) lock files (.Xauthority-*) are created and the program fails. The pnly solution is the remove the files by hand and try again. Sometimes it will work and swomtimes it won't. Interestingly that only happens on the local machine; ssh -X some.other.machine works fine.

I am considering an OCZ RevoDrive SSD that takes the form of a PCI-Express x4 card. I have not been able to find compatibility or support information for Linux, though apparently it works OK under Windows 7. I want to make this a system / boot drive.

I am looking into buying a cheap netbook and saw the Datawind Ubi-Surfer (e.g., Datawind Ubi-Surfer Netbook | [URL]). It comes with a pre-installed Windows CE which I will be keen to erase as soon as possible.
The spec is low, as can be expected: 128Mb ram (1GB flash), no optical drive (which poses the question of how to install openSUSE), but 3xUSB and ethernet are included.
I do not intend to use it for any processing. It is to run java applications and play music from an external USB hard drive.
Does anyone know whether this little box can cope with openSUSE 11.2 (or 11.3)? and if so, how do I install it without an optical drive?

I have just bought a new Intel Mac Mini, and I wanted to have an openSuSE slice. But I use a MinidisplayPort-VGA adapter to plug my display, and I wanted to know if the Mini Display Port interface was supported. In fact, I have already tried to install FreeBSD but my screen (VGA), more surely the interface (Apple MDP) wasn't recognized.

I have seen a lot of threads here and on others forums about problems with these models. I have a regular seagate portable that works great. The threads are all 2009 and older, so I was wondering if anyone could confirm that the free agent go portable models work before I buy one. Especially with 11.3. I can get a 640GB for $99.

I have recently purchased a canon pixma mx330 all in one printer. I tried using yast on 64 bit opensuse 11.1, kernel version 2.6.27.7-9 to locate the necessary driver to no avail. Is this a futile attempt or is there a driver that yast can't find.

I have a recently purchased Brother HL-3040CN printer that I had been using under Windows XP. I'm hoping to use it on openSUSE 11.2 64-bit. Having consulted SDB:Installing a Printer - openSUSE I ran lpinfo -l -m | grep HL-3040CN as su... evidently this model is not supported. The Brother site Brother Solutions Center : Brother Driver for Linux Distributions seems to suggest maybe there is hope. I am relatively new to Linux.

I'm interested to buy an usb print server for my HP C4480. Before spend money I prefer to be sure to choose the right device. My printer is HP Photosmart C4480 an it works perfectly with Opensuse (my version is 11.3).
I've seen on ebay a very cheap one, but it seems just mac/windows and compatibile. I need your advices and your experience to know which device could be suitable for my situation. I don't want to spend too much money, not interested in brands but just in something that works.

I installed openSUSE 11.2 and works great. The only problem I have is that I can use the XEN virtual machines only as a root. If I login as a normal user and open the Virtial Machine Manager I receive the following message:Virtial Machince Manager Connection Failure:Unable to open a connection to the Xen hypervisor/daemon.
Verify that:
- A Xen host kernel was booted
- The Xen service has been started

I have several Windoz machines in a peer-to-peer network and now two SUSE machines, one 11.1 and another 11.2.I have a network printer accessible now to all the machines. My next step is to be able to share files between all the machines and several network drives. I know how to set this up between the Windoz machines, but the only way I can get the SUSE machines to see the network (and be seen) is to shut down their firewalls, and I don't think that's how you are supposed to do it?Can someone point me to what it is that I need to read, or is there a FAQ somewhere to help get me started?
I think that this has something to do with Samba and I installed Samba (client or server? I forget) on the 11.1 and 11.2 seems to have it already built-in, but I don't know how to set it up with the firewalls on the two Linux machines so that it is all seamless (as if anything can be seamless).

I only have one IP adress to access the server. But the server will host 3 web sites and I want them to be hosted in a vm. So, I want to setup 3 virtual machines to do it and use apache reverse proxy and vhosts to redirect the domain requested to the right vm. Now. I understand the concept, but I am not an expert to set that up....
I have an openSUSE 11.3 server. So, I have to set a virtual machine server, is that right? I have been told that I cannot do it with VMware server in oS 11.3. Can I use virtualbox for this? I only have to install virtual box? Is there a special version to install? Once the virtual machine server is install, is it trivial to create 3 vm? So, I want to know wich are the steps I have to take to set that up.

I used to have my print server with cups in openSUSE 11.1 and it used to work perfect. I was able to print from both linux machines and windows. But since I Installed openSUSE 11.2, I'm only able to print from linux machines. In windows XP I'am able to find the printer and install the drivers, and everything seems to work, but when I send the print command, it creates an error. I have three XP pcs that were running perfectly, and now neither one of them print, so I know is a problem with the server itself. I have all the samba and cups services activated, and the firewall is set correctly, but can't figure out why it is working with linux machines and not with windows.

I have OpenSuse 11.3 with VirtualBox on it, and with installed Oracle DB (on host OS).. but, sometimes this computer is disconnected, without it's gateway (adsl router)... and in that case, I cannot ping from virtual OS to host OS, or another virtual OS. I tried to use 'Host only' option within VirtualBox, but it doesn't work. What should I do? It seems that virtual machines requires some kind of gateway/router, but since machine is disconnected, it's not working.. how could I fix it?

The geek-in-me won and I bought a spiffy little Acer Aspire One netbook, windows 7 starter installed. Now I take it to clients' workplaces instead of my 19" laptop (that I also bought because the geek-in-me won that time too).
So what do I install in the Suse/openSUSE range? I want a lightweight Linux, like Meego or openSUSE with a light Desktop. I need to be able to use remote connections like RDP and VNC to both Linux and windows machines, so maybe Meego can't do that? But maybe openSUSE with a very light Desktop will. I'll use gmail from the netbook, no need for Thunderbird etc. I like to have multimedia.

I have an e-machines flat pannel monitor and I often find it's not supported. That, or I have to use 800x600 resolution. I'm on XP right now on a compaq and I have to settle with 1024x768. Which is stretched out. I also use a linksys USB adapter for internet and it must work with-out effort on my part. It works with the latest versions of ubuntu, puppy, Damn Small Linux and a few others. Are there any distros that might work for me? And by the way, I get the correct resolution (I can't remember what it is) with my e-machines W3052.

I just got an update notification to install 11.04. Before updating, I just want to verify and see if anyone has run into any problems before I give it a go.
I have a MacBook Pro 6,2, currently with 4 Gigs of Ram, but I'm planning on upgrading that to 8 Gigs. I have read of trouble with some MacBooks not booting Ubuntu with more than 6 Gigs.
I was wondering if 11.04 fixes anything from the previous versions... The trackpad, being the main thing.

As a newbie for linux, I am really confused about gcc version. Aren't the new ones compatible the old ones? But online there is always someone says ,he should install a old suitalbe one for his IDE. I am really confused. If it needs a long words to express the reason clearly, a link or some books you recommend is a good answer.

Ok, so I want to install the ubuntu UNR on my desktop. is that possible ?
I have tried various times to install it on my laptop in it just stuck every single time at the end of installation. so I thought there might be a problem with compatibility for computers other than netbooks. My laptop is a thoshiba satellite a300 series laptop, with a core2due t5750 intel processor and 3GB DDR2 667Mhz (i'll post full specification if required ). so now I want to install it on my desktop, Dual-Core intel cpu e5300 2GB of ram @ 800Mhz Asrok G41M-VS2 motherboard
I got windows 7 running on the desktop now.

I'm going to install Ubuntu 64bit, currently run 10.10 32bit. I'm thinking about going back to 10.04 in combination with a previous version of wine(maybe 1.2?) to get some games working again.
Do any of you know if games are still working well with this combination? I'm looking to play WoW at some point, Oblivion + Expansion/Mods, any FPS available.

The one thing that keeps my XP partition alive is MS Word. Using both packages at a far more basic level than you guys by the sounds of it, but still the formatting is a nightmare. I've been using and trying out a number of distros over the past year or so and everything I need is right here. Its just so annoying theres one thing that stops me converting all together. I could write a perfect essay up in Open Office and take it into college. Open it up on their MS Word and its all goes to pot. Everything all over the place, and I have to realign margins, paragraphs etc etc. Regardless to file format its saved in, I've tried them all!
