Every time I try to install something, I get an error message saying : Cannot access installation media hd:///?device=/dev/sdb1 (Medium 1). Check whether the server is accessible. Show details says : Empty destination in URl: hd:///?device=/dev/sdb1. What I gonna do? I'm new to Linux. Is it a NTFS access problem or something like that?

I have same problem with *.bin files.When I try to install software from *.bin file I see error:

I am dual booting OpenSUSE and Windows 7 Pro x64. Each OS is installed on a separate 1Tb hard drive. One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

I am a total noob when it comes to opensuse. I just read the reviews and comments from forums taht's why I wanna try this alternative. I have 1 physical drive that has two partitions. 1 is dedicated for my windows OS (20 GB) and the other for my data (approx. 100GB).
How can I install opensuse 11.3 to just 1 partition (20GB) and leave my data partition (approx. 100GB) as it is? Can I still view/access/read the files from my data partition after I have successfully install opensuse 11.3 to my Os partition?
What the heck do I do now? 2 times I've re-installed suse 11.2 and this is what I get every time it tries the first update. I just had a perfectly fine working version of 11.2 that was installed using the network install just 3 days ago but I messed up and couldn't access mySql. Today I blew it away thinking I'd just start over and now it doesn't work. I installed it exactly the same as 2 days ago, whats changed? How do I fix this? If I open Open Office I can find all files in home, documents, etc. and open them.The computer is otherwise functioning normally but using the usual methods all the files that should show look empty. How did this happen? I was attempting to use WINE to load Avery Wizard (a Win utility) through AWsetup.exe. To do this I changed permissions for that file but I have subsequently removed the file and its subfiles using the terminal.

ERROR: Couldn't open /dev/null (Too many open files)
ext2fs_check_if_mount: Too many open files while determining whether ... is mounted.
fsck.ext3: Too many open files while trying to open ...
I found a new version of the e2fsprogs at the OBS package claiming to fix this problem. But installing this new version did not solve my problem.
Here some information about the affected system:
Operating System:openSUSE 11.2 (i586)
Installed e2fsprogs:e2fsprogs-1.41.11-4.1.i586
Number of LVs:35 (all ext3)
I can only boot if I comment out some of the filesystems in my /etc/fstab. It seems that the number of filesystems must be less or equal 32.
I have created 2 users in Opensuse 11.4 but when logged on as either I can access the others directorys and files, how can I encrypted these so a user cannot access the others files.

If I change the extension to html I can acces without problems. I checked everythig but I can't understand why any web browser access a blank page. Nothing appears when I'm cheking the error.log file (apache2)

I've installed Samba, activated the services Samba needs and add myself as a Samba user. My problem is that I can see and access files on the laptop from both of my desktops running Windows, but when I try to access them from the laptop I get a message saying the server timed out whenever I try to access my workgroup.
View 8 Replies View RelatedProblems with launching data files of the nas and saving to them is a kde problem. The dot desktop files have to contain access rights for smb/http etc and even when given these it still will not work. I have mainly concentrated on getting the VLC video player to work as it is capable of playing from just about any source, comes with codecs etc etc. Amazing package really.
Pure K apps such as kwrite at least work fine. I tried setting up samba but to no avail.
As dropping a file into VLC's focus didn't do anything I created a vlc desktop icon and dragged the nas file onto that. It plays and a kde error message pops up from plasma shell - can't find file!
I enable kde automount. The content of that when it starts is disturbing. It shows my system disks a detachable and not attached! No need to worry though. I selected mount on log in and attachment where the server was shown. VLC still wouldn't work.
Next I enable NFS file transfers on the NAS. This has allowed me to use open with directly onto an avi file on the nas. I can also click launch them. Remaining problem is opening files on the nas from within VLC. Up pops the kde message "you can only select local files". The file manager here seems to be an instance of dolphin. This suggest that there is going to be a problem saving files to the nas as well. Looks to be the case. VLC can convert formats and all sorts of things. If I select a file locally and try and convert it and save to the nas up pops the "you can only select local files" as soon as I select ok having set the path and file name.
Strange thing is that working transfers seem to be using CIF even though it took an NFS enable to get it partly working via KDE's automount. Dolphin only allows a CIF set up which has a distinct advantage as a direct ip address can be entered. The automount has introduced a very very long delay before kde is up and running following a log in. Samba is even worse in this respect and both seem to lack a method of direct ip input which means they have to find the server.
One other aspect. As far as NFS is concerned from a very recent post elsewhere nautilus works. Pass on CIF. And of course it's all instantaneous and ok on windows even on vista. Enabling the TV protocol on the nas has confused Vista as it only wants to connect like that and needs drivers. Might also be down to having NFS enabled though. MS might not like that.
I have filed all of this on bugzilla if anyone would like to vote - bug number 695648. Seems to me that the CIFs route should be the default for ease with many users on home networks. I'm also sure that the problem is basically KDE preventing aps from accessing the nas.

Is there a way to make the (router's) USB port to work in OpenSUSE? I have a external HD were I would access files from when connected to the router with the shareport utility but it only works on windows. I was wondering if it could work in wine? And how could I do it?

Okay, so bear with me for the lack of detail, its 3:46am and I'm really a beginner at this. So here is my issue: I decided I wanted to try Linux, so i got a Disc Image of Opensuse 11.3. while burning this disc image to a DVD-R I had no issues. But after the Validation was done an error appeared stating the disc Image was not burnt due to some error (apologies for not paying too close attention here) although the entire burn completed without issue. So I closed it and figured I would try again with another Disk when i get one.
Well as it turns out I did burn the Disc Image, and decided to try the Install. I have previously installed Ubuntu a few times and figured it was just as easy.. so I restarted my computer and booted from the CD. went through the Installation up to the Partition part.. This kind of confused me at first but I eventually got that it wanted to shrink my existing windows partition in order to make room. so i went along with it and began the install. well about halfway through the installation error messages kept showing telling me there were missing Packs. after about 10 messages I aborted the install for fear of what would happen now i have a shrunken partition and i dont know how to fix or what to do. I would still like to install opensuse but i dont have anymore DVD-R's and my Flash drive is too small. I will try to provide any info i can upon request. Oh, I forgot to mention im Running windows 7. if that helps at all which I doubt it does. I can safely access windows, nothing happened to the information on my drive. Im just missing 50GB of space now.

Greetings from Greece. I tried to install opensuse 11.3 in an empty disk . Unfortunately the installation progress stops in 88% and the message error says "error copy live image to the disk". I have burn two different cd but the result is always the same.Is it a hardware problem or the cd is not correct?I had the 11.2 version in the same pc without any problem for a long time.
