I upgraded from Suse 10.3 to 11.2, since when my Win XP box can't access the Linux files. All was OK before upgrading. The Linux (Suse 11.2) can access the Win files fine using Samba and the workgroup.
View 9 Repliesi have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.
I just did a large patch on my opensuse11.3 system (upgrade of all installed packages), and whilst my network interface works, I cannot get past my router onto the internet.
I can connect to other computers on my network (here at home), I have an IP address via dhcp from my router, but I cannot get internet access, either from thunderbird, firefox, or simply by [URL] Clearly the computer was connected to the internet just fine minutes before since I did the large patch! Also, my other computers CAN still connect to the internet.
how i can debug it? It is just too coincidental I have upgraded everything and now somethings amiss!
If it's relevant, my router is a netgear WGR614v9.

I just upgraded from Suse 10.x to 11.2. Unfortunately, I didn't use 10.2 much and I('m a bit overwhelmed by the upgrade. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
After my upgrade, I lost Internet access. I don't really know my way around too well, but I did try to ping my router, but had no success. (Although I can ping 127.0.0.1).
I'm guessing that this means network access is not configured, although it looks OK to me.
i work in an office with individual p/c's (all with windows xp) connected to a windows server. i have installed opensuse 11.2 on my work's p/c (as a dual boot) but have no idea what to do so that i can access files on the windows server. can some kind person point me in the right direction.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running SUSE 11.3 on a Dell Inspiron 1501. I'm trying to network it with my Windows 7 and XP boxes. I've installed Samba, activated the services Samba needs and add myself as a Samba user. My problem is that I can see and access files on the laptop from both of my desktops running Windows, but when I try to access them from the laptop I get a message saying the server timed out whenever I try to access my workgroup.
View 8 Replies View RelatedProblems with launching data files of the nas and saving to them is a kde problem. The dot desktop files have to contain access rights for smb/http etc and even when given these it still will not work. I have mainly concentrated on getting the VLC video player to work as it is capable of playing from just about any source, comes with codecs etc etc. Amazing package really.
Pure K apps such as kwrite at least work fine. I tried setting up samba but to no avail.
As dropping a file into VLC's focus didn't do anything I created a vlc desktop icon and dragged the nas file onto that. It plays and a kde error message pops up from plasma shell - can't find file!
I enable kde automount. The content of that when it starts is disturbing. It shows my system disks a detachable and not attached! No need to worry though. I selected mount on log in and attachment where the server was shown. VLC still wouldn't work.
Next I enable NFS file transfers on the NAS. This has allowed me to use open with directly onto an avi file on the nas. I can also click launch them. Remaining problem is opening files on the nas from within VLC. Up pops the kde message "you can only select local files". The file manager here seems to be an instance of dolphin. This suggest that there is going to be a problem saving files to the nas as well. Looks to be the case. VLC can convert formats and all sorts of things. If I select a file locally and try and convert it and save to the nas up pops the "you can only select local files" as soon as I select ok having set the path and file name.
Strange thing is that working transfers seem to be using CIF even though it took an NFS enable to get it partly working via KDE's automount. Dolphin only allows a CIF set up which has a distinct advantage as a direct ip address can be entered. The automount has introduced a very very long delay before kde is up and running following a log in. Samba is even worse in this respect and both seem to lack a method of direct ip input which means they have to find the server.
One other aspect. As far as NFS is concerned from a very recent post elsewhere nautilus works. Pass on CIF. And of course it's all instantaneous and ok on windows even on vista. Enabling the TV protocol on the nas has confused Vista as it only wants to connect like that and needs drivers. Might also be down to having NFS enabled though. MS might not like that.
I have filed all of this on bugzilla if anyone would like to vote - bug number 695648. Seems to me that the CIFs route should be the default for ease with many users on home networks. I'm also sure that the problem is basically KDE preventing aps from accessing the nas.
Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).
I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.
I installed 11.3amd64 as a VM under Vista/VMWare Player - all worked fine. I have now installed it as a physical system. It nstalled cleanly BUT during first boot it could not access the repos. With each repo it gave the message
- download (curl) error for (repo)
- error code connection failed
- error message could not resolve host (repo)
This was followed by a message box containing
- UI syntax error
- no widget with ID 'contents
Firefox could not access the internet (cannot find server) until I disabled IPV6 (I used about:config), now it works fine. I think the repos problem is because of IPV6 - I usually have trouble with IPV6. I tried disabling IPV6 with the following (How To Disable ipv6 on SuSE Linux | Linux Poison)

Yesterday, while upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04, the computer crashed. For this reason, when I reboot, Ubuntu doesn't recognize any longer the root folder and so on... and halts execution in a blank screen (well before the login screen).I'm currently running LiveCD and I can see the Filesystem with the root folder, the bin folder, home folder and so on....My question is How can I access the files I had in my desktop from LiveCD? I know the user and password so how can I access it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop computer running OpenSUSE 11.2 with two network cards installed. I would like to use both cards for connecting to the internet using different networks. The setting would be the following: eth0 is the main (default) card, almost all programs should use this NIC for connecting to the internet. eth1 is used only by a few programs, which have setting for selecting which network interface to use. The two NIC's are connected to different networks, so the IP address of the NIC's, the related subnet masks and gateways are also different.
Saying short, I would like to have the two NIC's as they would be in two separate computers. I can set the IP address and subnet mask of the NIC's. The main problem is that I can only declare one gateway. How can i setup this? I do not use network manager, I configure network cards using yast, but if needed I can of course use ifconfig directly.
I'm having a strange problem with my network connection/DNS. I turn computer the on and it recognizes and connects to wireless or wired but I can't access any Internet resources or my router. If I ping the default gateway, I get no response and I get DNS errors from any network services that run at start up. If I stop and start the network daemon then it all works fine until the next time I turn on my laptop. It does this for both wireless and wired connection.
I've tried to edit the network interface information in YaST but it says that configuration is handled by knetworkmanager and I have no idea where that information is accessed. I should point out that it all worked fine until I tried to connect to open WAP at my school and couldn't so I connected to the wired network. Next morning I had this problem when connecting to my home network. My questions are 1. What could be the cause of this error and 2. where does one configure the network interfaces when using knetworkmanager
I've setup a webserver with LAMP and wondered if it was possible to edit the files without having to login through FTP, as would be the case if I was editing on an IIS server?
View 2 Replies View RelatedNew SUSE 11.3 install connects to network/internet etc OK with DHCP-assigned IP address. When I switch to static IP, I can no longer ping internal network, or anything else. This works OK with SUSE 11.2 on same hardware and (as far as I can see) same setup. Some diagnostics are shown below.
Firewall
Disabling the firewall makes no difference.
Not using a network manager (can't see how to assign fixed address if I do - all greyed out).

I'm having a problem since my last upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3 (Gnome).
Before the upgrade NetworkManager would run just fine at start up, now I have to explicitly run the command from a console using the root user to start it.
(My problem is the same as this one, only in gnome instead of kde)
I can't access any of the wired network settings and theres a red square with an X through it. Here are some snap shots. This is really funky.Is this red box with the X suppose to be here?

They are still there, I just cannot Access them. Has anyone struck the same problem. I know I had this problem about 12 years ago, but being older and senile I cannot remeber what exactly it was. Real important as it contains php scripts which create xml data files for upload to web pages, so would like a quick fix if possible?

I have already learned that it is possible to upgrade from 11.x to 11.3 using Zypper from this nice german tutorial (Upgrade). But does it also work from 10.3? Should I upgrade all at once or every single version for itself?

May be there is an answer in some other topics but i'm sure which particular one is really the answer. The problem is the following. I've updated my OpenSuse 10.2 to 11.3 using this site and boot from DVD. But after I'd successfully completed the update I've not succeded to use Internet or local network more. Even I can't ping the gateway, I get just a message that network is unreachable. But I've set all IPs and the firewall is turned off. I already don't know what can I do to make the network working. As you see under Windows I have the Internet access ('cause I'm writing this message). And I had it before OpenSuse upgrade.

I changed the DNS server addresses and the number of IP addresses on my router. I then set my Linux system to use static IP addressing and edited the network settings for my network adapter accordingly. I can now no longer get to any web-site.
By contrast, I also updated 1 of my Windows computers in a similar way; it continues to work without problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have some problems accessing a smb share by name. Few day ago I was able to access the share by name but seems that today I cannot access anymore. I tried to restart the computer .. but nothing happened. Notice that the dns server is responding and is working correctly.
How can I debug this problem. It's annoying because I don't know all the IP addresses of our internal servers.
I'm kinda new to this, and usually i get help from a computor technician at school. BUT sins its Saturday, i cant get any help, and i realy need it.
