OpenSUSE Network :: 11.3 - Cannot Access Files From Laptop (Request Timed Out)

Jul 25, 2010

I'm running SUSE 11.3 on a Dell Inspiron 1501. I'm trying to network it with my Windows 7 and XP boxes. I've installed Samba, activated the services Samba needs and add myself as a Samba user. My problem is that I can see and access files on the laptop from both of my desktops running Windows, but when I try to access them from the laptop I get a message saying the server timed out whenever I try to access my workgroup.

Ubuntu :: FileZilla FTP Client - Request Timed Out

Jun 23, 2011

New User to Ubuntu by the way. I have two computers, both running Ubuntu 10.4 fully updated and I am trying to bring files from one computer to the other with Filezilla ftp client. I was able to do this before, but I ended up having to reformat because of a driver screwup that I couldn't figure out how to fix. Now I am at a loss on how I managed to allow the computer with the files to connect to the one receiving the files. Computer A is the one that has the files that I am trying to send to computer B. Every time I try to send them over I get a "connection was refused" error.

Typed in the right IP, username, password, and port but still wont connect. Are there any things I have to do in terminal to allow access? I installed firestarter and just disabled it so ports should be open. By the way, I am using FTP because it was much simpler then trying to dink around with Samba and this is a pretty safe network.
- Enabled firewall, forwarded the ports in the events list then we get "request timed out"
- Reformatted> Fresh install >Updated

Debian Configuration :: Network - Access Servers Request Failed

Feb 1, 2010

I recently installed two PC with debian lenny (kernel 2.6.26). One is called serveur-debian1 and the second one serveur-debian2. I have installed gnome,samba, mysql5, apache2, php5, and Virtualbox,bridge-tools on them. On serveur-debian2, i installed an other virtual debian lenny with apache2,mysql5,php5,nagios and centreon on it to view my network. I remember having installed a soft to access nntp on serveur-debian2 in order to test nagios.

Since a few days, i have problem to access to my servers. rom my windows 7 client, i try to ping serveur-debian1. Response is OK but not for all resquets Always from the same computer, i try to ping serveur-debian2. Response is OK but not for all again.

When i launch a ping on serveur-debian1 and serveur debian2 at the same time i have:

ping 1 to 10: serveur-debian1: response OK
serveur-debian2: no response
ping 11to 14: serveur-debian1: no response
serveur-debian2: response OK
ping 15 to 25: serveur-debian1: respone OK
serveur-debian2: @ip serveur-debian1 network unreachable (there's no error, it shows me the ip of serveur-debian1)

If i switch on the debian virtual server on the serveur-debian2, and i ping it at the same time, the response is OK for all resquests. The problem is very strange. I can't have a correct connection and when i launch a request from a software which access the mysql server, the requests failed ...

OpenSUSE Install :: .conf Files Missing After Update Timed Out?

Mar 17, 2010

I was running an update to updgrade firefox to the latest version. the update timed out and now when i boot the laptop i get the command line login. Typing startx brings a screen with a black cross in the middle and a black and white background.

In the boot process a lot of errors are coming up saying "conf files need .conf". Also i have noticed an error that says the xorg.conf file is not where it should be. I know this is responsible for graphical boots so could be my problem. However yast and network services are also not working in the command line so i am unable to update to fix this. I installed from a live CD so im unsure how to use this to repair my system?

OpenSUSE Network :: Dot Desktop Files Have To Contain Access Rights For Smb/http?

May 27, 2011

Problems with launching data files of the nas and saving to them is a kde problem. The dot desktop files have to contain access rights for smb/http etc and even when given these it still will not work. I have mainly concentrated on getting the VLC video player to work as it is capable of playing from just about any source, comes with codecs etc etc. Amazing package really.

Pure K apps such as kwrite at least work fine. I tried setting up samba but to no avail.

As dropping a file into VLC's focus didn't do anything I created a vlc desktop icon and dragged the nas file onto that. It plays and a kde error message pops up from plasma shell - can't find file!

I enable kde automount. The content of that when it starts is disturbing. It shows my system disks a detachable and not attached! No need to worry though. I selected mount on log in and attachment where the server was shown. VLC still wouldn't work.

Next I enable NFS file transfers on the NAS. This has allowed me to use open with directly onto an avi file on the nas. I can also click launch them. Remaining problem is opening files on the nas from within VLC. Up pops the kde message "you can only select local files". The file manager here seems to be an instance of dolphin. This suggest that there is going to be a problem saving files to the nas as well. Looks to be the case. VLC can convert formats and all sorts of things. If I select a file locally and try and convert it and save to the nas up pops the "you can only select local files" as soon as I select ok having set the path and file name.

Strange thing is that working transfers seem to be using CIF even though it took an NFS enable to get it partly working via KDE's automount. Dolphin only allows a CIF set up which has a distinct advantage as a direct ip address can be entered. The automount has introduced a very very long delay before kde is up and running following a log in. Samba is even worse in this respect and both seem to lack a method of direct ip input which means they have to find the server.

One other aspect. As far as NFS is concerned from a very recent post elsewhere nautilus works. Pass on CIF. And of course it's all instantaneous and ok on windows even on vista. Enabling the TV protocol on the nas has confused Vista as it only wants to connect like that and needs drivers. Might also be down to having NFS enabled though. MS might not like that.

I have filed all of this on bugzilla if anyone would like to vote - bug number 695648. Seems to me that the CIFs route should be the default for ease with many users on home networks. I'm also sure that the problem is basically KDE preventing aps from accessing the nas.

OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Browse Outside LAN - Illegal Request

Jan 12, 2010

Tomorrow I decided to dedicate 100% of my disk to opensuse! So I backed up the files from the remaining windows partition, deleted them and expanded the /home partition. Well, I ran into some problems during first boot. I referred to an article at the wiki and fixed it. Although I did some small fixing manually at the fstab file. The system booted! But I can't browse anywhere outside the local network! At this forum I found some info regarding the dmesg |tail command. Here is my output:

OpenSUSE Network :: Firefox Buggy During Request?

Apr 19, 2010

I am experiencing real buggyness in firefox 3.6.3. Sometimes when I click on any button e.g. this form (submit new thread), I get no response whatsoever. It lacks that responsive feel. Might I mention that it happened some of the time. Its probably not because of the ISP because I didn't have any problem before when I was using Vista. Maybe it was because I meddled with things like this and tweaking some stuff in the about:config. I'm out of ideas.

OpenSUSE Network :: Dhcpcd Not Sending DHCPDISCOVER/-REQUEST At Boot, Timing Out?

Aug 2, 2010

we have a problem with dhcpcd at boot time on any openSUSE version from 11.0 to 11.3. It seems that a number of workstations never send out DHCPDISCOVER or DHCPREQUEST at boot time, we have verified this with packet dumps. The dhcp client progress bar is displayed on the console but eventually times out, goes into background and the system continues booting.This is a problem because the timeout takes a long time and users have to wait. Sometimes the display manager is even started but users cannot using LDAP authentication. Eventually these systems just continue to use their old lease and networking works.Curiously, when we do a network restart after boot, the clients send DHCPDISCOVER/-REQUEST normally, we only have this problem at boot time.

On the server side we're using ISC dhcpcd-1.3.22pl4-223.13 on SLES 10 SP2. I have read about others who had the same problem, they switched from dhcpcd to dhclient. I have also tried this, but for us dhclient is not an option for a number of other reasons. Another thing I have tried is setting DHCLIENT_SLEEP ("Some interfaces need time to initialize. Add the latency time in seconds")o two minutes to give the interface time to initialize.nfortunately this didn't change anything.

OpenSUSE Network :: Weirdness With WordPress On Localhost - An Unexpected HTTP Error Occurred During The API Request

Nov 25, 2010

I installed WordPress 3.x on my localhost/Apache server, but I can neither install plugins nor update anything.This happens with both the stable WP3.0 version and the 3.1 beta. When I try to search the Plugin Directory from the WP dashboard, I get this message: An Unexpected HTTP Error occurred during the API request.When I run an update, I get a page asking for the login credentials for the ftp user ("To perform the requested action, WordPress needs to access your web server. Please enter your FTP credentials to proceed. If you do not remember your credentials, you should contact your web host."). Since I'm part of the 'ftp' group on the system, I enter my system login information, click Proceed -- and get a blank page that does nothing.

I've gone to YaST, and I see that the system ftp user has a 6-character password (which may or may not be mine). I'm afraid to change it and risk screwing up other ftp-related functions. I'm running openSUSE 11.3, and am obsessive about updating. I will note that I have an old 2WIRE router that often requires me (including Zypper repos) to enter IP addresses instead of DNS-based URLs to successfully download stuff. Not sure if this is related, but just in case...

OpenSUSE Network :: Root User Has Access To Remote Folders/files Of Any User?

Jan 21, 2010

Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).

I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.3 Amd64 - Having Internet Access But Cannot Access Repos - IPV6?

Aug 26, 2010

I installed 11.3amd64 as a VM under Vista/VMWare Player - all worked fine. I have now installed it as a physical system. It nstalled cleanly BUT during first boot it could not access the repos. With each repo it gave the message

- error code connection failed
- error message could not resolve host (repo)

This was followed by a message box containing

- UI syntax error
- no widget with ID 'contents

Firefox could not access the internet (cannot find server) until I disabled IPV6 (I used about:config), now it works fine. I think the repos problem is because of IPV6 - I usually have trouble with IPV6. I tried disabling IPV6 with the following (How To Disable ipv6 on SuSE Linux | Linux Poison)

OpenSUSE Network :: Two Network Cards With Different Settings For Internet Access

Feb 9, 2010

I have a desktop computer running OpenSUSE 11.2 with two network cards installed. I would like to use both cards for connecting to the internet using different networks. The setting would be the following: eth0 is the main (default) card, almost all programs should use this NIC for connecting to the internet. eth1 is used only by a few programs, which have setting for selecting which network interface to use. The two NIC's are connected to different networks, so the IP address of the NIC's, the related subnet masks and gateways are also different.

Saying short, I would like to have the two NIC's as they would be in two separate computers. I can set the IP address and subnet mask of the NIC's. The main problem is that I can only declare one gateway. How can i setup this? I do not use network manager, I configure network cards using yast, but if needed I can of course use ifconfig directly.

OpenSUSE Network :: Network / DNS - Can't Access Any Internet Resources Or Router

Jul 30, 2010

I'm having a strange problem with my network connection/DNS. I turn computer the on and it recognizes and connects to wireless or wired but I can't access any Internet resources or my router. If I ping the default gateway, I get no response and I get DNS errors from any network services that run at start up. If I stop and start the network daemon then it all works fine until the next time I turn on my laptop. It does this for both wireless and wired connection.

I've tried to edit the network interface information in YaST but it says that configuration is handled by knetworkmanager and I have no idea where that information is accessed. I should point out that it all worked fine until I tried to connect to open WAP at my school and couldn't so I connected to the wired network. Next morning I had this problem when connecting to my home network. My questions are 1. What could be the cause of this error and 2. where does one configure the network interfaces when using knetworkmanager

Server :: Samba Shares - No Password Request For Access

Feb 23, 2010

I recently switched from centos to fedora as my server choice. Probably not the best decision but I like trying new things. Now before I switched I had my samba server setup just they way I wanted it. Now I'm having a hard time getting it back to that way. Here is my smb.conf

Code:
[global]
workgroup = workgroup
netbios name = netbios name
server string = Linux Server
security = user
wins support = yes
encrypt passwords = Yes
domain logons = yes
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = yes
writable = yes
valid users = %S

[me]
path = /home/me
read only = no
public = yes
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
browseable = yes
writable = yes

Now I did throw away my old smb.conf because it wasn't that complicated and I figured I could reproduce it.. aside from that everything is working except for the fact that I can access any share I want to listed without it requesting a password. I have a username and password setup with smbpasswd and I think everything else is setup correctly involving samba shares but I have no idea why it won't request a password.
