just want to download the 60mb-ish pack of family photos from my external usb hard drive. I've gone through a multitude of wikis and help threads and can't seem to figure out how to copy and paste those files to my laptop The usb hd works perfectly as I just was using it about 1 hour ago when I still had vista on this laptop. just installed ubuntu couple of days back on my netbook. I am still a beginner, enjoying my adventure exploring ubuntu. I have another desktop which runs on XP. I am able to access XP shared folders through my netbook(linux). However, i wanted to copy files from XP infact folders using TERMINAL in my netbook, not copy and paste using my mouse. Are there any commands for it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm mostly a linux-idiot but I tried to get an update for a laptop that was running xubuntu. Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?

Laptop Acer Aspire 1312XC. Have just run a 24 hour RAM test it turned out ok. Have tried with other RAM blocks in aswell. The install freezes at random points in the installation. Mainly when trying to copy files to the hard drive. The only thing i've succeded in installing was Ubuntu server and windows XP. I have tried with ACPI off and all the other special atributes. No success so far.

1) I manually enter a particular web site address in the browser.
2) When the page displays on my machine, it shows a number of links I need to visit, one after the other.
3) Each of these links display another page (file) from which I "cut and paste" information. I do this by highlighting manually the wanted info, click "copy" then select an open file on my computer, select "undo" if necessary to remove any previous content, click "paste" and then "save".
4) I then call a Yabasic program that reads the saved file and trims unwanted info.
5) At the completion of the Yabasic program, I click the web page tag, click the "back" button to return to the first page (since I am in the second) and click the next link in this first page till all links have been visited.
6) visit the next known web site and repeat 1 to 5
In an automated program, what I need to do is:
1) Visit the known page of the web site showing the links
2) save the page showing the links (the first page)
3) make a list of those links
4) visit each link one after the other and save its page from which I will programmatically (Yabasic) select info.
5) repeat 1 to 4
I can do this in "Yabasic" (which can issue Linux commands) or PHP although I do not know PHP much.the purpose of this is to associate towns and cities of the world with their respective political/geographical divisions and their respective time zone. This has to be done often because that data changes regularly.
I have an Apple Airport Extreme dual band router, with a 2T hard drive plugged into the USB port, formatted with FAT32. Both Mac OSX and Windows 7 automatically see the drive and all the files on it, but unfortunately, I can't get Ubuntu to really see that drive. It sort of shows an icon under network, but if I try to open it, I don't see any files in it.

Lets say I log in to bash, open a file in vi, then using alt-f2 I open a new terminal. After logging in I navigate to a second file and open that in vi. How can I CnP between these two files?

Alternatively, I read in the VIM docs, it is possible to open multiple files under split screens. This may be a course to a solution. The need I often encounter has me navigating in a different bash window to find a file, then wishing to copy between the two. Whereas, I imagine, a split VIM window useful for files in the same directory.
My usb stick will not allow me to easily copy and paste files on to it, or delete them once I no longer want them on the drive. Its owner is root. How can I change the owner? At the moment it is loading as a stylesheet in media/usb0.

Recently my laptop broke down and wont start up. I'm currently trying to recover my files to my mac with an IDE to USB cable. It recognized my windows partition fine and I was able to get all my files off of that, but the majority of my stuff is on the ext4 partition that I have on it. Does anyone know how to access the ubuntu partition of this hard drive from my mac?

I just noticed that highlighting text and middle button clicking no longer copies and pastes as it has it has been for years. I haven't upgraded anything or installed any new software so this is a bit confusing for me. How I may restore this function? I am trying to use k9copy to simply copy the iso of a DVD movie to my hard drive. No matter what I select I can't get "copy" to enable - it stays grayed out. When I try to run the wizard it crashes after I select in my input source. I don't care what app I use, I just want something lightweight and easy to use that will copy the iso.

According to my google searches, I need to run ubuntu from a live cd, then in a partitioning program copy the ubuntu partition to the new one, then resize it. Is that all? Do I need a linuxswap partition on the new hard drive? I have been using kde partition manager to arrange my new partitions. On one hard drive I have the partition I want to install ubuntu on(what type should this be? ext4?) and a partition to share between ubuntu and windows, and then will use my old ubuntu partition for installing windows xp.

/dev/sdb is a usb flash drive that has pmagic (not sure of the version, but it's 2.6.32.9-pmagic kernel, so I think it's the latest version). I'm posting from pmagic right now because I don't want the failing disk to get any worse until I get this sorted. I currently am dual-booting Lucid Lynx and Windows 7, and rather than go through the process of reinstalling both, then reinstalling all my programs, settings, and everything, I was wondering if there's a way I can just copy the partitions on my 175 GB disk to the new one, grow them to fill up the rest of the free space on the new 2 TB disk, and then plug that HD into the primary master plug on my motherboard... will that work?

I called Tigerdirect this morning and ordered a Hitachi 500GB hard drive model# OF10381, here's my dilemma. I really want to just do away the old hard drive and use the new one but it seems as if there's not a real good way to copy the entire hard drive including the OS. I have been told that you can use a program such as norton ghost to do it. I do though have a Windows 7 disc, I am going to use a SATA host PCI card to connect the new HD. if I should back everything up from the old HD except for the OS. And then unplug the old HD and just do a fresh install with the Windows 7 disc.

It's my own fault - the install was running out of room on /, and I, like an idiot, decided to delete some package files under /var/something/archive, thinking they were "old"... I quickly realized they were in fact the new packages being installed... anyway after killing the thing and rebooting it is pretty damn broken (mostly because I can't get networking going so running in dpkg repair mode doesn't do much because, well, I deleted the packages).
