Everything look great but I don't get how to connect to ethernet connection or how to turn on wireless. I always had automatic connection on ubuntu since 8.04. For now I'll look for some repository and download the "nt" applet manager.
View 3 RepliesI have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card and a Marvell Yukon 88e8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller, and I cannot for the life of me get the internet to connect. I've tried both wired and wireless connection. I have a PPoE connection through a Verizon FIOS Actiontek router I believe, though the PPoE part may be wrong, I had one five years ago when I first got their internet so they may have changed it. Point is that the ethernet and internet won't work, and without a working ethernet I can't fetch the right drivers for anything.
I had also tried plain ubuntu 10.04 and couldn't get them to work then either. It said 'disconnected' at first, and then said 'device not ready' There is no hardware switch but there is a key toggle. It doesn't seem to matter what state the wireless was in before booting into Ubuntu Studio, so I'm lost as to where to even start. Even though the network manager isn't there like in regular ubuntu, I assume there will be a simple way to connect to the internet once the drivers are found, right?
I've seen issues and read about fixing them, but usually it uses an ethernet connection to fix the wifi connection and, being new to linux (<50 hours worth of experience lifetime), all I managed to do trying to fix it myself was screw up the installation to the point where the laptop couldn't access the home folder and I had to reinstall. Other than that, I am usually very good at following instructions, as long as they apply to my laptop's issue I guess
The only other issue is minor, I can't seem to control the USB mouse I have, but the trackpad works fine so it's no big deal, probably a matter of downloading the mouse driver once the internet works.
Currently I do have internet access via the same laptop while booting Windows 7 (I installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a 10GB Partition with the idea of using an external HD for most data storage).
Oh and it is a 64-bit machine, the Studio version I installed is 32-bit.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new Dell Studio 1558 and I can't turn the wifi on when logging to my account, the wireless card is installed correctly but the button (F2) doesn't work to turn the wifi on.

On windows there is a program from dell that associate these keys (wifi -F2- and Eject optical drive) to their functions.
I wonder how can I achieve this under OpenSuse.
I have recently installed Fedora 12 on an external drive (by itself) on a Studio 15 laptop. The installation went flawlessly, but I am now having trouble getting a network connection (persumably due to lack of network card detection) to work. The ISO I used (via LiveUSB) is: Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso. My wireless card: Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card.
I have googled solutions to this, and came across this reference:[URL] to drivers for my network card. I download the file, and notice several C files in the '/src' directory of the .tar. Am I supposed to extract and compile these somewhere? Also, would I presumably be able to still get a hardwire connection with the default profile Fedora shows me without additional drivers? I am used to installing drivers already in .exe form, but would like how to handle these sorts of things in Linux.
I would like to have all traffic from the ethernet connection out through the wireless (basically using the box as a router) however I am having some trouble doing this.
I have done this before on Windows however I am having some trouble doing this on linux, I have tried using Squid Proxy however I am having some trouble using configuring/using it.
I am using Yellow Dog Linux however I am willing to change to any other distro as long as it is compatable with PS3 (as this is what im using linux on)
I have recently installed ubuntu 11.04 on my asus eeepc1005hab. And I've had problems with the wifi. I can connect via ethernet, but the wireless won't connect. I can see the connection, but my wifi never connects. I've tried many things but it still won't work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedDell Studio 1735 w/BCM4312 WEP fails to connect even though I'm using the 10 character HEX key. It connects fine when there's no security on my Linksys WRT310N router. Ubuntu, Windows 7, my Samsung TV and TiVo all connect fine with the 10 character HEX key, but with opensuse 11.4 I can't connect.

I just removed my previous linux install and installed Ubuntu Studio because of the nicer look.However the login screen is still the borin plain one. I have been to the "Login Screen" and tried to select theme as mentioned but it doesn't have any tabs or info for it.

I CAN use both wireless and ethernet using my machine on Windows.....so the connection stuff does work. Here's the output of of the commands I got from the "sticky". My wireless card doesn't have linux drivers installed. I found the correct drivers, but I am unsure of the correct way to install them in Windows so they work in Ubuntu. Everything works fine under windows. I have tried to find relevant information in the forums, but nothing seems to work for me. I have tried disabling ipv6, setting a static ip, but no go. ifconfig shows no IP, dhclient results in no DHCP offers and pinging my router's IP results in Network is Unreachable.

When I plug an ethernet cable into the ethernet port, simply nothing happens, and when I try to connect to my wireless network, it connects but there is no actual internet available. I'm sure the wireless works as I'm on an older model Toshiba Satellite and it connects fine (running Ubuntu 10.04 as well.) I'm been wanting to try Ubuntu for a while now, and when my mom's netbook started to get insanely slow with WinXP, I tried the Netbook Remix on a USB stick. I LOVE it, except I am unable to get the wireless working, which is the only thing stopping me right now from a full install.
I believe my problem is that I need to activate the two drivers "Broadcom B43 wireless driver" and "Broadcom STA wireless driver" which appear as unactivated when I go into the hardware drivers admin tools. Unfortunately this netbook (HP Mini Netbook FW376UA) does not have an Ethernet port, so I can't just temporarily hard wire it to activate these drivers.
So my main questions are: 1) How can I activate those drivers without an internet connection?, and 2) Do you think that activating these drivers is indeed the answer to getting the wireless working?

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook
I have one of these nifty Atom based "net-top" boxes that has built in wireless N and gigabit ethernet. the problem I have is that even when the ethernet cable is plugged in Ubuntu seems to be defaulting to use the wireless connection. This is a problem since in some areas of the house where I have a wired connection the wireless signal is pretty weak and so the ethernet traffic becomes spotty.
is there a setting somewhere where I can force ubuntu to prefer the wired over wireless no matter what, or to disable the wireless when the ethernet is plugged in?
I have a wireless Internet modem (USB) and a LAN Ethernet connection. I can only pick 1 of them to connect to (by disconnecting the other). How can I connect to both at the same time?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I select the wifi icon on the panel, it just shows "No network devices available". I know my network can be found when I search with my iPhone, so I know there are networks to connect to. So, I checked the drivers, and it informs me that the B43 and STA drivers are not activated. So thats not a big deal, I guess, but when I use my ethernet cord, my laptop doesn't recognize/acknowledge (I'm not sure what the right term would be)it. I'm fairly sure I can't activate these drivers without an internet connection because when I do try, a message pops up saying "failed to fetch" with some long link.
My only guess is that it could be a hardware problem, but I really have no idea. I guess the ethernet problem is my only real problem. Because after I establish and internet connection the the rest is easy to fix.I'm sure its obvious, but I'll go ahead say that I'm a novice ubuntu user. I installed 10.3 (after buying it a couple of years ago and letting sit on the shelf) and can't get it to configure my ethernet connection or my wireless card. Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

Just today I installed opensuse 11.3 on my Compaq CQ61. Even though I am able to connect to networks (both with an ethernet cable and wireless) I don't have internet access. I have used opensuse for a very brief period in the past and I had no such problem.

My WiFi button on my laptop is orange and I press it and it doesn't go blue like it normally did when I had windows vista. I just updated my wireless driver off of ubuntu and restarted and nothing happened! its still not connecting me to the internet, I only have access through the ethernet I am using. I cant go ethernet, this is only temporary and I really want ubuntu, I really need it, but its not letting me go wireless. View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my Ubuntu Server from 10.04 to 11.04. I am having issues with the ethernet connection upon boot. The connection will blink slowly and not stay connected to the network. If I then unplug the ethernet from the switch and then replug it in, eth0 will get a steady connection, at which point I have to run the following command to get everything working.

I installed a clean installation of ubuntu 10.04 inside Windows 7 and wireless worked normally in the beginning that I downloaded and installed all the updates "I selected without updating Grub".On the first reboot after updates, the wireless icon disappeared from the panel and could not connect to the internet although the settings in the Networking tools were correct.
