OpenSUSE :: User Friendly Viewing Power Point Presentations
Oct 14, 2009
I was chatting with my 83+ year old mother last night on the phone about her computer. She boots about 50-50 between winXP and openSUSE-11.1. She was complaining about some Windoze problem that neither my wife nor I could remotely fix (with us living a continent away) and she noted she would not boot to winXP if it were not for the fact she can play back (from her Hot Mail account) power point presentations MUCH easier under winXP than she can under Linux. Hence she often boots to winXP because she can handle those files easier under winXP.

About two years ago, my church set up a wireless access point. They gave it a WEP encryption, and wrote all the keys down on a piece of paper and taped it to the router, which was in full view, and reachable for anyone to get what they need and connect. I used it once, saved all the settings to the default network manager applet on my laptop (running Fedora Core 12), and put it back. Earlier this year, the front hall (where the router and paper with encryption keys was stored), was completely redone, and the router put up in the drop ceiling.
Mistake. Now the darn thing is sitting on top of Fiberglass insulation, and impossible to get to. There are people who need to connect, but since it's a church, and they don't really understand, they went and buried that router WITH all the encryption keys. So long story short, I need to get these people connected, but need to find the key... preferably without Hacking in. Is there a way, on the default "Network Manager" Applet, or in the terminal to VIEW saved keys?

I do not understand Software Update. I've been using Fedora for about three months now and I've used the software update a few times. This time it tells me I have 3.1 G of updates! When I select a few that might fix current problems, the only app status is "loading"--no progress bars, or status messages. In fairness, the previous updates ran without incident. This time with 3G I was forced to manage the session and I can't tell if its working or not. Is it hanging with this message?
I canceled that download and did it again selecting 8 updates. But when I compared the reported file sizes (< 5MB) and the summary at the bottom ( >270MB) there was a huge difference --50 times more data! Are these dependencies?
I'm really not even sure how to go about selecting from 3.1 G security updates (1G), Bugs, and whatever else. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are there any tools (gui?) that make the xkb configuration easier? I know xev, but that sadly only displays the keycode and the character, but not the shortcuts like <LSGT> that xkb is using internally. I am stuck with the old problem of improperly mapped keys on my German Apple Aluminium Keyboard. My old workarounds that worked with Hardy and Karmic (modified "de" files in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols) do not work anymore in Lucid.

Hi ya
I thank you all for previously helping.
NOW, I'm looking for a non-Ubuntu, but still easy to use, download, and install via USB drive distro that's user-friendly.
Any help? It's for an Acer Aspire 7741Z-5371
It has a 64bit processor, but i generally use 32bit 0Ses. 250 GB hard drive, 3 GB DDR3 RAM.
I'm just sick of Ubuntu and want to branch out a bit, as a new user

i am using Ubuntu 11.04 on my computer system. I urgently need a good video converter for converting videos.I have already installed FFmpeg and men-coder,Winff etc. The problem is each has its own drawback. For instance ffmpeg cannot convert a .avi to .3gp with audio working. My preferences are the converter should be user friendly, should support all popular video formats.

Ever since the 11.4 update I have to enter my root password in order to shutdown the computer, I think this is because I'm not a part of the "power" group. I remember something similar in 11.2 but I never got around to fixing it.Is there a way to join the "power" group?? I don't see it on the user and groups management section in yast.

I cannot log into the normal user account after shutting down the OPENSUSE 11.1 system by cutting off electricity. The system always returns to the login page which requires to choose account id and enter passwd even when I type in correct normal user id and passwd. The root account can be used.

So, after over 10 years, I'm ditching KMail. I just can't take Akonadi anymore. After a few hours of running, it just sucks the life out of my system. If I need to run Akonadi to run KMail, then I'm done with Kmail. So, I've got 10+ years of mail stored in maildir format, and I need a new mail program. I'd like to stick with something KDE friendly if possible, but I'll take what I can get.

I have a directory, /root/backup, that I mount and run a bunch of rysnc scripts against to backup my box. I'm running into a very recent problem where when I run this command:
A directory that once looked like this:
Goes to this:
It changes from root to www (another user on my system) and I have no idea why.
When I look at the /mount/procs file, I see this:
So it looks like the uid is correct...
I believe this is what is causing my rsync scripts to fail (they only copy over directories and not the files in those directorys and I get a lot of permissions failed errors)
All of this is run as root in cron jobs
As a note, here is a sample rsync command:

I am thinking of getting a domain name or ten I do not know were to point the domain to?
and what do I need to setup if a user wants a domain name to point to his account on the server? ok more like I want to have a few domains pointing to my user accounts I have setup on the server..can I do this directly or do I need a server domain first before users can get a domain name?
I have a basic setup user web space and ftp and mysql setup
what extra would I have to install or not to be able to get a domain pointed to my server and/or user accounts?
I don't seem to be able to find anything specific on how to set this up anywhere.

I'd like to add a user to my server that will only have access to a mount point over sshfs. Is there any way I can provide them this access without actually giving them permission to open a terminal on my server? I tried /bin/false and /sbin/nologin already, but /bin/false didn't allow the mount point to be made and /sbin/nologin prevented a login completely (also stopped the mount point from working).

I have recently updated from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.3 . I am now having problems with viewing or opening more than one PDF file at a time. If I have a PDF file open, when I open a second one. I get a page with nothing on it. When I close the first PDF file, an I try to open the second one, it opens with no problems. I am not quite sure what is causing it. By the way this happens when I try to view files from a browser for example from sciencedirect.

I used to be able to open a terminal when viewing a folder and the terminal would automatically be in that directory so all I would have to do is type the command. Now, it doesn't seem to work like that. No matter what folder I'm viewing within Konquerer or Dolphin, the terminal is always at the /home folder no matter what. Can I change this behavior and set it to the way it used to work on my old system? (SuSE 10.0)

I use OpenSUSE 11.3+KDE and I set Konqueror as my file manager, since I got used to it for some years. My problem is that I cannot use the embedded image viewing feature of Konqueror as I could previously (KDE 3.5). Now i left click on an image and ok, it appears properly, but then I move to the next image. First I have to navigate back and then click onto the next image, which is quite inconvenient.

I will be setting up a computer for people who have very little experience using computers and I want to limit their ability to break things. I'm thinking Linux is the way to go but I don't know what distribution to use. I don't know anything about their hardware other than it is an old laptop. I don't have a lot of experience with Linux, but I would think that without sudo there is not a lot of things you can break.
What would be a good Linux dist that has everything out of the box? (flash, vnc, office, etc) How should I set up the user account to avoid giving them too much power, yet still allowing the computer to be useable for daily tasks? (Will they be able to update software?) I also want to be able to control the machine remotely since I won't have physical access after I set it up, so I am looking into ssh, vnc, (or a better alternative?).

If, as root, I 'Leave' --> 'Logout', I get the KDE login screen. If, as user rob, I 'Leave' --> 'Logout', I get a black screen from which I must power off to recover, and I use the term very loosely. User rob is a member of the 'power' group.
