OpenSUSE :: Opening Terminal When Viewing A Folder?
Jun 27, 2010
I used to be able to open a terminal when viewing a folder and the terminal would automatically be in that directory so all I would have to do is type the command. Now, it doesn't seem to work like that. No matter what folder I'm viewing within Konquerer or Dolphin, the terminal is always at the /home folder no matter what. Can I change this behavior and set it to the way it used to work on my old system? (SuSE 10.0)
I have recently updated from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.3 . I am now having problems with viewing or opening more than one PDF file at a time. If I have a PDF file open, when I open a second one. I get a page with nothing on it. When I close the first PDF file, an I try to open the second one, it opens with no problems. I am not quite sure what is causing it. By the way this happens when I try to view files from a browser for example from sciencedirect.
I just upgraded from Maverick 10.10 to 11.04 64-bit and I have the following problem: every program that provides an "open file or folder" function such as synapse -> open folder, firefox downloads open folder, deluge open, instead of opening nautilus in the desired folder (default behavior of 10.10), it just opens a gnome-terminal.
I switched to ubuntu in 2008 dual booting it with windows vista. I loved ubuntu but I began to run into a few issues and eventually went to windows only for a while. Well I am back into it as of november of 2010 since my windows Os was just ticking me off. I absolutely LOVE linux but I've run into the exact same issues I had before. The most pressing issue at the moment is the fact that for some reason when I click on anything in "places" such as documents, music, etc. nothing happens. This includes clicking on the HD on the desktop. I click and then menu goes away as if its going to open the folder but it doesn't. Going to computer works and I can go from there but I want to know why this has happened seemingly out of the blue and happened both times I installed ubuntu? When I typed sudo nautilus into terminal I get the following:
Code: xavier@xavier-Vostro1510:~$ sudo nautilus [sudo] password for xavier: Initializing nautilus-gdu extension ** (nautilus:19375): WARNING **: Failed to get the current CK session: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager.GeneralError: Unable to lookup session information for process '19375'
(nautilus:19375): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_value_free: assertion `value != NULL' failed Nautilus-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory. Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.
I am not sure exactly what this means but maybe it is a clue. I am actually planning on reinstalling linux at some point because I am dual booting and running out of room so I am gonna kick windows to the curb (it wont load up anyway) but I want to resolve this since its happened twice and will again i am sure.
i am using Fedora 14. Once system get hanged during opening a video file so I had to restart the system by pressing restart button. But after restarting there are few problems appearing like system monitor not opening and Thunder bird opening but not showing any folder including inbox.

I dont know if terminal is what im after, but here is my situation: This is a follow up to this thread on not some graphics issues with my linux install: [URL] I have finally managed to get a full install complete, but im still getting this screen on boot (prior to this screen i DO get the kubuntu loading screen) [URL]
So in the GRUB at start i have choosen Linux - recovery mode, to see what options that gave me, and i tried FailSafe mode, but i get an error and it just goes back to the recovery menu. My question is how do i get to the terminal style screen as its too quick for me to see the error, and i cant photograph it as its too fast. i cant see it being an issue with the graphics because of the properly displayed kubuntu loading screen beforehand
Currently, whenever we open a folder like "media/DATA/Work/Projects/Linux" at the top of the window it views each folder/subfolder as a button like [media] [DATA] [Work] [Projects] [Linux]. So if you click a folder named "Ubuntu" within the "Linux" folder another button [Ubuntu] will be added.I like this feature, but often i find myself needing to copy and paste that address somewhere and all I can do really is type it out manually. Is there a way to also display the address location in text like "media/DATA/Work/Projects/Linux"??
I cannot change directory to a more than three folder tree destination folder from ~ in terminal. I've checked everything. No Typos or misspell. The destination folder was recognized by "ls" command but when I went to it, the terminal said, "no such file or directory."
I basically am hoping for a line of bash script I can put into "Open With" for folders so I can get a terminal with the right path. I hate manually typing in paths to places when I am looking right at them in nautilus. "gnome-terminal" doesn't work - it just opens a terminal to ~.
A strange problem has cropped up with gnome on 9.10 amd64. Everything seems fine until I open a folder of JPG images. The window opens, starts filling in the icons and then POOF everything disappears except the desktop background. I have to restart X with CTL-ALT-BACKSPACE. It happens every time. I have used this folder many times in the past without problem. The folder's contents appear ordinary - see below:
I am helping a friend with his ubuntu PC, and I reinstalled to go from 8.04 to 10.10. In the process I had reconfigured his home directory to be a separate partition, it all worked ok. Although I did have to do the new install as a new username etc as I think is usual in such cases. I am not *convinced* I sorted all ownerships and permissions out. after the new install, I did change ownership of /home/oldusername contents using chown, which seemed to work ok. I do note that for the old username in the original 8.04 installation the uid was 1000, but the same username in the new installation is 1001
the problem is that nautilus does not start from Places > Home folder all that is seen is a waiting circle, which soon stops. But nautilus *does* start from a user terminal with just nautilus
Command automatically in gnome terminal, when i open it. so i changed the setting in edit->profile preferences->title and the command->command section. now when i open the terminal, command is running successfully.afterwards terminal is closed automatically. how to open my terminal prompt.with the sl program running and not closed..
When I click on a folder in "Places" the appearance editor starts up and says that for example "Home Folder" or "Documents" does not appear to be a valid theme. XDG-open has the same results. Folders on the desktop open fine. I am at a loss here, I can't figure out what I did.
Hi I am a complete newbie I have installed ubuntu 10.04 I have sorted problem with Mobile broadband, but having problems opening root folder I get a permission denied not the owner I have admin privalage as far as I am aware I was following something I read using terminal but kept getting a message saying something about the root I opened the file manager found root folder but still denied access. how I get access same is also true for lost&found folder but have to admit i dont know what that folder is.
Ive got a simple bash script that basically just displays a couple lines of text and a random quote. In startup applications, I made "gnome-terminal --full-screen" open up and in the profile preferences of gnome-terminal I made it run my startup script. There are two problems though.(1) At startup, 2 terminals are opened (one fullscreen, one not fullscreen)(2) By bash script runs and keeps on running (how do I get it to display another input line?)
I like to alias my firefox commands so I can open up mutiple pages at once. This works great. firefox [URL]
But if I have firefox already up and running it will open as tabs of the firefox I already have running. How can I open the multiple pages in a new window in this case?
- Using -no-remote could work, but I would have to make a whole different firefox profile for each set of pages, not really a solution. - Also tried setting it to a particular display and it opened as a tab again. ie. firefox [URL] -display=":0.0"
I really can't say what I did that may have triggered this problem. I've been trying to setup remote access through SSH but that's about it. Haven't changed any settings in a bit though. I downloaded Konsole and it closes immediately as well.
When I VNC into my CentOS server I am always met with the usual GUI and an annoying terminal window. If I try to close the terminal window it reappears immediately. I can only minimize it to the taskbar. Am I missing a simple setting to disable this?
Here is my xstartup file:
#!/bin/sh # Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop: unset SESSION_MANAGER exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
when i try to navigate to my home folder, or any folder for that matter from the main menu bar, it brings up the appearance preferences menu. it started doing after i made a new background picture using GIMP. after setting the img file as the desk top using the appearance prefrences, this started happening. if anyone could help me fix this that would be awesome.
I have a 'special script' in my .bashrc file, which I want to be performed only at Login. When I open a terminal (through a gnome launcher <gnome-terminal> as the command) it unfortunately sources .bashrc.
Hence the opening of the terminal runs the 'special script' again.
How can I instruct .bashrc not to do something except when and only when I am logging in? I found a segment of code which is supposed to do what I want but I am not sure of how it works.
Code:
Will this work to put my 'special script' in to ensure that it only runs when it is a login script and not when it is a simple launcher terminal opening?
Like the title says, I want to be able to open the directory I'm browsing in nautilus. To clarify this, as I barely understand what I said, I'll give an example.
Code: cd ~/what/ever/this/is/complex/path Hmmm.... A lot of files in here with long complex names and I only want to move certain ones..... Better open it in nautilus with my handy dandy script/alias!
I need to call a .sh script without directly opening the terminal. Is possible to do so writing and compiling a script (e.g. Java or Python) so when I double click it, it opens a terminal window and runs the .sh automatically?
I am new in Linux,i build nano editor on Linux,it compile successfully but when i open in terminal then error displays "Error opening terminal : Xterm" while nano help is running successfully.
I want to launch the screen program by default and automatically every time that I open the bash terminal. How can I set this in terminal? I'm using lxterminal - terminal for lxde desktop environment.
Firefox does not open under any circumstances, it's allocated in the memory and has it's process ids, but the browser is not opened at all. There's not terminal output when ran in terminal, no dmesg, debug..., nothing.
The only info I could give:
Terminal try:
Code:
Code:
So, I really don't know what's happening, if someone have some light to shed, I'd be glad.
