Nov 5, 2009I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

Mar 28, 2011I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

Apr 22, 2011I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.

Sep 14, 2010Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

I tried uninstalling it and installing open office and also in the soft center open office is more than once, but I tried the different versions and I still get the same problem.
Fedora :: Cannot Play Sounds In F14 With KDE 4.5.5
Feb 6, 2011For some reason I cannot play sounds anymore. It worked fine, but it just stopped working and I have no idea why. Might have been an update, but I'm not sure. I really have no idea what to do, restarting certainly didn't do anything. I use Fedora 14 with KDE 4.5.5. In the system settings I can chose "Internal Audio" as Hardware with a couple of different Profiles, of which none work.

Jan 24, 2011I just installed Fedora 14 (running KDE) on my HP DV6Z-SE. It came pre-packaged with Windows 7 and I am running a dual-boot (I kept Windows for gaming purposes). Anyway, problem is I am unable to play media sounds. I've tried playing my music (all OGG Vorbis) on both DragonPlayer and VLC, to no avail. When I go to Phonon, I have two options for prefered devices, "Redwood HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5600 Series] Digital Stereo (HDMI)" and "Internal Audio Analog Stereo".
When I test them, the Radeon one never plays sound, while the Internal Audio plays the test sound sometimes (rarely). I tried moving the latter up the preference order, but it changed nothing.
OpenSUSE :: Winecfg Doesn't Play Any Sounds Under Wine

I was completely shocked to find that the new Wolfenstein demo works perfectly under this version of wine, but sadly I get no sound. winecfg doesn't play any sounds, just a faint humming sound when testing, and I get the same thing when playing the demo. I've had the problem of sound sharing on this system with each install I do, and I've installed/re-installed many many times so far.

May 9, 2011is there a nice clean simple lightweight way to assign pc keyboard keys sounds?anyone know a simple lightweight way to assign sounds to keys in linux?like so your keyboard can be played like an instrument...i'd rather not do it through thewindow manager'sconfigurations, assigning single key shortcuts to audio samples, since i dont want it on all the time, and having two wm configs to toggle between could just get messy, and limits it to that wm, until you build it all from scratch again for another wm.or even if there isnt a simple lightweight way... what audio/midi software lets you assign samples/notes/etc to keys.(i tried searching for quite a while, but it was obvious i was struggling to find the terms that werent so genereic and with multiple meanings, that just get all the wrong kinds of things)

However, once I unpack the gzipped file, I get several deb packages from within the archive. Oct 14, 2009I was chatting with my 83+ year old mother last night on the phone about her computer. She boots about 50-50 between winXP and openSUSE-11.1. She was complaining about some Windoze problem that neither my wife nor I could remotely fix (with us living a continent away) and she noted she would not boot to winXP if it were not for the fact she can play back (from her Hot Mail account) power point presentations MUCH easier under winXP than she can under Linux. Hence she often boots to winXP because she can handle those files easier under winXP.

OK, solved it; for anyone else having trouble, I completely removed ttf-mscorefonts-installer package then reinstalled it; upon reinstallation I got a EULA to accept and everything went as expected.
