OpenSUSE :: Permission Error When Writing To NTFS In Dolphin / Get Rid Of It?
Mar 2, 2010
I'm fairly new to linux and I have a dual boot laptop with OpenSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I have ntfs-3g and have full read-write ability to my Windows drive through OpenSUSE thanks to NTFS - openSUSE. The only problem is whenever I write to the NTFS Windows drive via Dolphin it does the writing but I get an alert box saying:
"Could not change permissions for <path to new file>" with an OK button.
If I write more than one file I'll get one alert box for each file unless I don't press OK until after it finishes writing all the files in which case it will just give me that one that it was showing (once I press OK there aren't any more boxes).
Since I have full ability to read-write this isn't that big of a problem it's just annoying as hell an I'm sure it's pretty simple to get rid of. code...

I partitioned my drive to dual boot with XP, and I also added in a fat32 partition so both Windows and Linux can read/write to there to share files. I now have a problem with permissions (I know that fat32/vfat does not support permissions.) I can as my normal user read/write to this partition, but I want to set-up a CodeBlocks project on there and this is where I run into my permissions error.I can create it and the .cbp file is there ect. but I can not save any work, it will complain ('could not write', or sometimes with 'maybe this drive is write protected'.) I have something like
UUID=1234-1A23 /repo vfat defaults,umask=000 0 0
in my /etc/fstab

I'm using Dolphin 1.5 on KDE 4.5.1 on openSUSE 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4(M1).
I select a folder and right-click to get "properties." On the "permissions" tab, I select "advanced permissions." Up until that moment, everything is the same on all three versions. Then -
On 11.2, I get a panel sub-headed "access permissions" which has one column headed "special" which has three buttons. Below that is a panel in which I can add, edit or delete entries so that I can, say, grant one user special permissions.
On 11.3 and 11.4, I get a panel with the same heading, "access permisssions," but which is very different apart from that. Below the heading is a table containing 4x3 buttons for setting "user," "group" and "others" but no panel such as in 11.2.
This different behaviour occurs for the identical user and folder. I've checked that Dolphin preferences are the same for 11.2 and 11.3. Why am I getting a less useful display from the later versions of openSUSE?

I'm running oS 11.3 KDE 4.6.3. If I try to delete a read-only file in the terminal I can, but get a warning message I have to confirm:
[Code]...
In Dolphin the file is simply sent to trash, no warning. I couldn't find a setting in Dolphin configuration options to change this. I do have "Ask for confirmation. when moving files and folders to trash" unchecked, but even so, if the file is read-only?

I'm new to OpenSuse 11.2, In Yast partitions configurations, I've mounted all NTFS partitions successfully without ticking "read-only", and according to this webpage: NTFS - openSUSE I checked my fstab file, there's no "-ro" in the file. But I still couldn't write to any mounted NTFS partitions, I can't do paste file, can't save changed files into NTFS partition.

I am using a new install of Kubuntu 10.04 LTS. My system is a 64-bit AMD desktop.
I use a small partition for my entire Kubuntu install, and use separate, larger partitions for my media and work files.
I opened up Dolphin (my KDE file manager) via GUI, navigated to my media partition, and attempted to create a new folder by
right-click->
Create New->
New Folder-> etc
The Create New in the menu is ghosted out, as if I have no permission to access it.
How can I write files to the drive?

I'm trying to get Eclipse IDE running on my openSUSE 11.4 (KDE).
I have downloaded Eclipse Classic from Eclipse Classic 3.7 | Eclipse Packages. I started Dolphin and extracted the tar.gz file to a directory called eclipse. Now, as I understand, to run Eclipse, I must run the executable eclipse. But when I double-click eclipse, I get an error saying, "There is no application installed that can open files of the type executable (application/x-executable)."
Note 1: I have uploaded 3 screenshots as an album at Imgur: Eclipse with image titles and captions.
According to the screenshot #1, the file eclipse has a permission set of -rw-------. The execute permission is missing on this file. So, here's what I did: (screenshot #2) Right-clicked and selected Properties and under the Permissions tab, checked the Is executable checkbox and clicked OK. But still (screenshot #3), the permission set remains the same.
Note 2: The parent directory permissions are visible in the Terminal window below in all the screenshots.
What should I do to make eclipse executable?

When I installed OpenSuse 11.2 it mounted I configured to mount all of my windows/NTFS partition. However, one problem is that only root can write to it. I was trying to change it to '777' permission. However, as root I can't change permission. chmod doesn't work and neither does using nautilus (as root) work.I even tried unmounting it and then doing a chmod. That didn't work either.

I have some problems accessing NTFS USB devices from Dolphin. If I mount by hand the device, mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 /media/disk I can access to the disk from Dolphin. mount command reports: /dev/sdc1 on /media/disk type fuseblk (rw,allow_other,blksize=512)When the same disk is mounted through Dolphin (by clickin on the disk icon), I cannot see any content. mount command reports: /dev/sdc1 on /media/FLS-U2-300 type fuseblk suid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=512,default_permissions)root@obelix:~# As you can see, mount command reports different configurations. I suspect the extra parameters used by Dolphine causing problems but I don't know how to configure KDE to change the mount options. This problem is new to Slackware 13.1. My previous 13.0 configuration had not that problem

I mount the share on my Windows server with following command:
Code:
mount -t cifs -o username=Administrator,password='mypassword',rw,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777,nobrl,uid=1000,gid=100 //10.8.0.1/users /mnt/
In my 11.3 computer it works well. I opening, copying files like I do in local filesystem. At the same time it's not working well on my 11.4 computer: the share mounts without errors, I see all files, can copy them from server to local computer. But when I'm trying to make copies to server, sometimes I receive messages like "Error writing file ...". Not always, but in the most part of my attempts. find the part of my /var/log/messages file:
Code:
Aug 23 17:35:55 linux-393i kernel: [ 3522.419904] CIFS VFS: Unexpected SMB signature
I use following kernel: 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop

For some reason when i write a file to my NTFS-partitioned external HDD the files seem to get severely partitioned. This only happens when writing to it from within Fedora.
Windows Vista doesn't seem to do this.
This image is a screenshot from MyDefrag.
On my other hard drive i have a 7GB file consisting of 1400 fragments.
i'm guessing this is too much fragmented, because it was a completely empty hard drive before it wrote the file.
What could have caused this please? and how can i solve this?

My main workstation incorporates a mixture of ext3, ext4, and NTFS partitions scattered across a number of hard drives. Several of the ext4 partitions are encrypted, and I intend to encrypt the rest of the Linux partitions in the near future.I run VMware workstation, with several Windows OS guests, including Win2K, WinXP and Win7. My Win7 VM is installed on a virtual hard disk, and that virtual hard disk is encrypted using VMware facilities.So this leaves me with a bunch of NTFS partitions that are not encrypted. These are physical partitions on a couple of different hard drives. The reason I have them is ancient and historical, and as I have upgraded my system over time I have maintained the architecture due to the extreme difficulty of rearranging Windows systems.I still need to maintain Win2K and WinXP support, and rearranging those virtual machines would represent a hideous nightmare for me; I really want to maintain the same hard drive partition architecture.But I want to encrypt the NTFS partitions, in a fashion that can be handled by any of the Windows operating systems, AND can be accessed for read and write from Linux.Is this possible? If not using Windows facilities (I don't think ntfs-3g handles encryption, and there are known backdoors in the Windows facilities anyway), is there any third party solution that would work? Would True Crypt do the job in a fashion that would permit access from all the various operating systems, as required? I do generally mount the NTFS partitions in whichever Windows VM is appropriate, then share them out via SMB, but there are circumstances (like when a VM is not running) where I will directly hit them from Linux. So, it is possible for me to contemplate a solution that only works from Windows, but this would cost me the ability to repair/modify those filesystems directly from Linux, which under certain circumstances (a malfunction of the VM, for instance) could be a problem.

I just noticed on my Ubuntu machine (ext3 filesystem) that removing write permissions from a file does not keep root from writing to it. Is this a general rule of UNIX file permissions? Or specific to Ubuntu? Or a misconfiguration on my machine? Writing to the file fails (as expected) if I do this from my normal user account.Is this normal behavior?Is there a way to prevent root from accidentally writing to a file (Preferably using normal filesystem mechanisms, not AppArmor, etc.)
I understand that root has total control over the system and can, eg, change the permissions on any file.My question is whether currently set permissions are enforced on code running as root. The idea is the root user preventing her/himself from accidentally writing to a file. also understand that one should not be logged in as root for normal operations.

I have the following line in my fstab:
Code:
# external hard drive
UUID=4DDD273633F3859D /home/ross/external ntfs-3g auto,exec,user,uid=1000,gid=100,dmask=027,fmask=137,utf8 0 0
When I plug in the drive with this UUID, I get the following error:
Code:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root. Please see more information at [URL] Is there any way that I can mount this drive (which must be ntfs-formatted) without root permissions? I have googled this error and it seems that many other people are having this same problem, but I can't find a real solution. Most people suggest just reformatting the drive.
