General :: Removing Write Permission Does Not Prevent Root From Writing To File
Feb 3, 2010I just noticed on my Ubuntu machine (ext3 filesystem) that removing write permissions from a file does not keep root from writing to it. Is this a general rule of UNIX file permissions? Or specific to Ubuntu? Or a misconfiguration on my machine? Writing to the file fails (as expected) if I do this from my normal user account.Is this normal behavior?Is there a way to prevent root from accidentally writing to a file (Preferably using normal filesystem mechanisms, not AppArmor, etc.)
I understand that root has total control over the system and can, eg, change the permissions on any file.My question is whether currently set permissions are enforced on code running as root. The idea is the root user preventing her/himself from accidentally writing to a file. also understand that one should not be logged in as root for normal operations.

Mar 23, 2011The root user of Linux doesn't have permission to read/write a regular file, unless all users have permission to read/write this file, like below:
drwxrwsrwx ....... file_name
However the owner of the file can still read/write this file.
AND:
0) not the problem of execution, just read/write
1) not the problem of device because regular user can read/write it.
2) the result of command id:
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)
so I don't think it's the problem of group.
General :: ACL - Permission Denied / Resolve This?
May 17, 2011I'm hoping someone can help me out with this issue I'm having using acl(s). I have a user I want to grant access to logs I have stored on my server. I am doing this by setting up an acl to that directory where the logs are stored. My settings seem to look fine, however I cannot read or even reach the directory with the said user; we'll call him "userP".
Here is my code:
To ensure userP has access to the parent directory (jboss) code...
Not sure what I'm doing wrong here: there are no errors in the logs; just "Permission denied" however I try to get to the directory.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Aug 21, 2010Since lucid was installed, I can no longer access my floppy drive. I try creating an image on it and this happens:
$ dd if=a.img of=/dev/fd0
$ dd: opening `/dev/fd0': Permission denied
How do I get permission to do this? I'm the only user and am an administrator.

Oct 4, 2010After I type sshd: 192.168.1.11 : allow and
sshd : ALL : Deny
I can't access hosts.allow or deny any more.
It says "Permission denied"
Before I typed that, I can access hosts.allow and deny.
By the way, I was wondering what command to edit hosts.allow.
For example, I want to put sshd: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx : allow in that file.

Jan 6, 2011I am trying to put a file from one linux machine to my other linux machine. There is absolutely no problem in downloading the file i.e. performing the "get" operation but when I try to upload or "put file" from my host1 to host2 it throws error "Error 0 Permission denied". I am able to put files from host2 to host1 without any problem but not from host1 to host. Infact if I try to tftp even localhost on host2 it throws the same error. Here is my

Sep 14, 2010I want to let a regular user (not just root) restart apache on my Ubuntu machine.I was using /etc/init.d/apache2 so I figured this is what I have to set permissions for. I set the owner group for this file a group to which that user also belongs. I set the chmod to 775 but it didn't work. I then even set it to 4775 thinking this would totally make it work but it still didn't.I'm obviously giving permissions to the wrong file.
