General :: Partition - Or Dolphin - KDE - Won't Allow Writing To Drive - KDE

I am using a new install of Kubuntu 10.04 LTS. My system is a 64-bit AMD desktop.
I use a small partition for my entire Kubuntu install, and use separate, larger partitions for my media and work files.
I opened up Dolphin (my KDE file manager) via GUI, navigated to my media partition, and attempted to create a new folder by
right-click->
Create New->
New Folder-> etc
The Create New in the menu is ghosted out, as if I have no permission to access it.
How can I write files to the drive?

restore a partition images on another machine to the unused space on my laptop. I'm using netcat and dd to restore the partition.
On laptop:
nc -l 192.168.192.254 9000 | dd bs=1024 conv=notrunc,noerror seek=<some block pos> of=/dev/sda
On W/S:
dd if=part.img bs=1024 | nc 192.168.192.254 9000
The problem is that fdisk -l displays start & end sectors of the partitions and I need to know blocks. How do I determine the block number after the last partition to start writing this image?

I'm fairly new to linux and I have a dual boot laptop with OpenSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I have ntfs-3g and have full read-write ability to my Windows drive through OpenSUSE thanks to NTFS - openSUSE. The only problem is whenever I write to the NTFS Windows drive via Dolphin it does the writing but I get an alert box saying:
"Could not change permissions for <path to new file>" with an OK button.
If I write more than one file I'll get one alert box for each file unless I don't press OK until after it finishes writing all the files in which case it will just give me that one that it was showing (once I press OK there aren't any more boxes).
Since I have full ability to read-write this isn't that big of a problem it's just annoying as hell an I'm sure it's pretty simple to get rid of. code...

I have tried to automate the configuration of a usb drive with not much success.
The problem that I have is that I have a large amount of usb drives that have a partition table of type "loop" and I need to change them to "msdos". The size of the drives vary and I need to use FAT32 or FAT16 file system.
I've tried various partitioning commands and gui applications but cant find one that I can give a one line command to to set the partition table, maximum partition size and file system.

I have recently installed Debian 6.0 Testing with KDE4.4.5. I have two fixed ext3 partitions on the hard drive but when I click on the second partition in Dolphin the following error message appears: "org.freedesktop.hal.device.volume.permission denied, refusing to mount /dev/hda5 for uid=1000". I have searched the kde forum and other sites and have found reference to it on other distributions. It appears to be a hal configuration problem. KMint kde 4.4 seems to have resolved the problem as my other partition is running the same kde version and I can access the debian partitions. Perhaps I should just manually mount the partitions when needed!

I just added a new drive, formatted it, and everything is ready. except that it does not show up under "places" in dolphin. Removable drives show up almost instantly, and same with all my other useful partitions*, but not this one. I can add a link to the folder it is mounted in, but that is just not the same...
is there something I need to do to fix this?
*(swap are not usable partitions)

I just installed Fedora 12. When I open Dolphin, I do find links on the sidebar which enable me to mount the NTFS partitions with a click. I want to disable this for less privileged users and only allow root to do mount and unmount of partitions. I was not able to see autofs installed nor any sign of entries in the fstab.

I am having a problem with Dolphin where if I am trying to view the files in an extra partition I have mounted it crashes. It only does it on partitions not usually mounted at start up. The error it gives is:

Just installed 11.3 and upgraded kde to 4.5. Install is on Toshiba notebook with Win7 and Mepis 8.5.
Ntfs and all other partitions show in fstab and partition manager but not in Dolphin or Konqueror.
How to see and mount other partitions?

I had occasion to boot Ubuntu livecd yesterday on a Dell machine with XP installed. I pressed the Escape key during boot to see what might be happening behind the Graphic ...... and got a rather upsetting surprise ..... ... apparently Ubuntu was reading and writing to the XP partition ..... without any notification to me. I don't have the exact wording to hand, but what is said was that the XP install was 'dirty' and it was fixing it .... fixed! I used a 9.10 CD. Is there any information out there that addresses this behaviour? Is there a way to boot the CD and prevent this from happening? I do not expect or want ANY liveCD to write to ANY partition on ANY PC I might boot using that liveCD without my explicit permission/instruction. That this liveCD did write to a partition without asking or informing me is sufficient cause for me never to use such a liveCD again.

Ever since I started using KDE as in 4.2, I have been doing this regularly. When I startup KDE, I open Dolphin and click and mount each partition with root pass. I thought it might be some KDE issue as is the ever developing code and will be fine in future updates. But now I'm in 4.2.1 and it still exists. Upon inquiring fellow users on other distros, I have come to believe this is a *Fedora only* issue now. [URL].

I inserted a disc and tried to access it through Dolphin. It shows up in the directory explorer thing as a disc and with the disc name, but it has a little / thing in the bottom corner of the icon, and when I try to access it, it gives me this long error on the bottom of the file area (can't remember what all it said, something about 'harvey' and being unable to find the directory in /etc/fstab). The same thing happened with an external drive, which seemed to work fine before but now has the same problem.

I've used ext2ifs drivers to mount my ext3 partition in winxp, but I don't have write acces, it's mounted in a read-only mode, and i didn't check the rad-only box during the installation of the drivers. [URL] It's a straithfoward proces so I dont understand what I did wrong. I'm using fresh xp install with (more or less) all the updates and ubuntu 10.04 Also the partition is mounted at /home, so I dont know if that makes any difference.

I am trying to move a whole bunch of files from one partition on one hard drive to the same partition on another hard drive. Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.

I was just wondering is 2.5mb a second normal to write to a usb2 pendrive with the 'dd' command?
I know dd maybe having an influence on writing time, but it still seems really low for usb2 transfer?
Is there a command to measure the time a file takes to transfer from HD to usb pen? (not using dd).

My laptop came with a hidden partition for restoring Vista instead of an install disk. I installed Ubuntu 9.04, which had an "Advanced" option that allowed me to install grub in the Ubuntu partition without writing over the MBR. Then I used EasyBCD to add Ubuntu to the Vista boot loader. I wanted to do this so that I can still restore the factory copy of Vista from the hidden partition if I need to. I upgraded the Ubuntu to 9.10, still using grub. When I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 it went to grub2, and I haven't figured out how to boot into it with EasyBCD yet.But I would like to try Fedora anyway. I will wait a couple of days and get 13.
1. Which grub does Fedora 13 use?
2. Will Fedora 13 allow me to install grub in its own partition without writing over the MBR?

I am running Debian squeeze on a Seagate Dockstar. It boots Debian from a USB flash drive, and has two 1 TB usb hard disks hooked to it. The machine is used for only rtorrent and nfs. The flash drive contains only the system software and rtorrent. All of the data that rtorrent moves around is on the usb hard disks, including downloaded data, watch folder, and session folder. About once a day I run rsync with the source being usb_1 and the target being usb_2: # time rsync --progress --stats -a --delete /media/usb_1/ /media/usb_2 Since this machine boots from a usb flash drive, I'm interested in keeping the number of writes to the flash drive to a minimum. The machine used to boot from an Adata flash drive, which has no LED. That drive wore out after about five months. Completely dead, as in gparted would fail with an I/O error on write when trying to write a new partition table to it. No big deal - I restored the software to a new flash drive using an image I had made in Clonezilla.
The new drive (a Sandisk Cruzer 4 GB) has an LED and I assume this is showing me when the drive is being accessed, read and write. When the system is at idle, the LED sort of "breathes" off and on slowly. When rtorrent is downloading or uploading, it flashes a few times and goes back to breathing.
I'm assuming that once everything has been loaded and the system has been running a while that when the LED flashes, that means that data is being written to the flash drive. (Is this a good assumption?) With just rtorrent running, there's not much flashing, maybe 10 - 20 times/minute. However when rsync is running, the LED just flashes on and off like crazy. The daily rsync run takes anywhere from three to 30 minutes, depending on how much new data was downloaded each day. But no matter how long it takes, the LED just flashes like crazy the whole time.
I'm assuming this means that all the new data from the source drive is being written temporarily to the flash drive or something like that, and this is wearing the flash drive out prematurely. Does this sound likely? If so, is there a way to get rsync not to do this and to do its thing in RAM only and not write to the boot flash drive?

for the last three days, I have been trying to get my drive ( LiteOn iHas624 ) to work. Unfortunatly, it seems that I can only use the burner with Nero4Linux or Brasero, but not K3B.DVD-RAM/+RW packet writing seems neither to work out of the box, nor by the setup as suggested in /usr/share/doc/udftools/README.Debian or the media4linux howto(just to name the most promising, i definitly read more on the issue).
I tried to format the DVDs in various udf revisions, as well as ext2 just to check, but without success.As I am close to the point where I would rule out the possibility to obtain package writing capability, I dare to ask for help.I would be very grateful for any hint or reading recommendation on the issue.

I'm using 11.3 x86-64 KDE4.4,I bought a Corsair 4GB thumb drive last week,but when I tred to transfer some file from Dolphin to Corsair,the 'paste' selection in pop up is grey color,it means I couldn't paste thing into this thumb drive. I tried to modify the permission of this thumb drive,but failed,it pop up said I have no permission to do that.And when I download a .rar file tried to extract it with Ark,it loading the archieve like never ending,what's the problem?

I partitioned my drive to dual boot with XP, and I also added in a fat32 partition so both Windows and Linux can read/write to there to share files. I now have a problem with permissions (I know that fat32/vfat does not support permissions.) I can as my normal user read/write to this partition, but I want to set-up a CodeBlocks project on there and this is where I run into my permissions error.I can create it and the .cbp file is there ect. but I can not save any work, it will complain ('could not write', or sometimes with 'maybe this drive is write protected'.) I have something like

in my /etc/fstab

Trying into install fedora. I am setting up my system as a dual boot over two drives. I have set up a custom layout and whenever I get to the step to write changes to disc it crashes with an unhandled exception. I have tried multiple times now, it always crashes.

I have a relatively common problem, but I don't seem to identify it's source. I have a SAMBA server on my LAN to which there are mapped a few shares as network drives in windows xp (as Y: ) and mounted as CIFS in linux [as /y]. The problem is that every time I save a file [either windows xp or linux] on the mapped drive / mounted folder, our IDEs alert us that the file changes right after the save. I am running SAMBA 3.3.2.

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

I have the Ubuntu 10.10 netbook saved to my thumbdrive and can boot it up to where I can try it or install. When I go to install I get to the part where t asks if I want to replace windows or run in side by side. I choose side by side and then it takes me to the screen where I have to partition my hard drive. It will not give me the option to do it automatically, only the advanced manually option or replace windows is there.
So when I have to manually partition the hard drive, this is where my lack of knowledge emerges and where I need your help. I have 239 GB available. I was going to leave 189GB dedicated to windows and use 50 to run ubuntu. The part that is Japanese to me is the file format, boot, root, nfts, etc, etc. Can anyone break it down for me BARNEY style?
I have backed up all my windows data and defraged the hard drive. I just want to get this ubuntu working.

I'm at a stage where I can start using Linux for all the tasks that I currently do on Windows and am keen to make a full switch to Linux. I have played with Linux a few times over the years, installing different distros etc, but I've never set up the hard drive partitions manually. I only want to make the switch once I have a good grasp of how to configure the hard drives as I have a lot of precious data.
A question I have is that normally I would set up a small partition for the OS, then have another large partition purely for data. What would be the best way to recreate this kind of set up with a Linux file system (i.e. keeping OS and user data separate)? Where would be the best place to store a mass of data that wouldn't necessarily be associated with one particular user? I've seen about having a separate partition for users home directories, but I don't really want the data associated with one user so it would seem more logical to store it somewhere more general.

Lets say I have /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 which is a 5.8 GB ext3 partition that resides on a 10GB drive. This is just a logical volume partition, one of a few... this being the one that isn't swap, the main data.
I have a 20GB drive... I want to move the LogVol00 to it, and it is /dev/sdb. I partition /dev/sdb1 to be 8192 MiB in size in gParted.
I move as such:
dd if=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 of=/dev/sdb1
The operation finishes with no problems.
Fsck reports clean... so... I run:
fsck -l /dev/sdb1
A few small errors pop up and they get fixed.
My free space remaining, as expected, is 5.8 GB.
I go into gParted and resize the partition to 15GB in size, still working on the 20GB drive.
It does so, the operation completes.
I have what I want: the partition was taken out of LVM, data was retained, I have no issues resizing it. Additionally I tried writing random junk to this new filesystem to test to see if it's broken, and also deleted 3gb of files already on it with no problems.
I just want someone to look this over and tell me if they see any problems with what I've done. I've tested this twice so far with success each time. Is there a better or easier way to do this? I do not want to keep LVM for various reasons. By the way, you might be wondering why I made the partition 8GB for an almost 6GB system. Because the first time I did it, I put down a number that was too exact and it didn't work. Overestimating to 2GB fixed the issue - I'm guessing this is probably due to block size.

I'm currently running Xubuntu 10.04LTS as my main distro, but would like to also run Fedora 13 on the same machine.Therefore, I'm more so just after a bit of steer of the best plan of attack to achieve this - best procedure to partition the drive (80gb / i686) and install Fedora etc.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.04 on an HP Compaq dc5000 uT with Windows XP Pro. service pack 3. Downloaded the ISO file and burned a CD with Infra Recorder. The demonstration version works ok as far as I can tell, this is my first try at using any form of Linux. If I can get Ubuntu to work I plan to get rid of Windows completely. I'm stuck at step 4 of the install process, all options in the partition window are dimmed, nothing is clickable.
