OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Change Permission Of Mount Points For NTFS Partition Even As Root?

When I installed OpenSuse 11.2 it mounted I configured to mount all of my windows/NTFS partition. However, one problem is that only root can write to it. I was trying to change it to '777' permission. However, as root I can't change permission. chmod doesn't work and neither does using nautilus (as root) work.I even tried unmounting it and then doing a chmod. That didn't work either.

When I click on my Vista partition under "Places" in the Fedora menus, I'm asked to enter the root password for mounting the partition. Is there a way to allow any user to mount this particular partition, to avoid the unnecessary input? The partition is not listed in /etc/fstab (fedora 12 for x86_64).

I have a Suse 11.0 Server that has been running for a long time and I have not had to touch it, well I need to get into it today and I forgot the password. So I booted it up with the install disc and got into the rescue mode but I am not sure how or which system to mount to change the root password I tried sda and sda1 but it errored out with unknown system type

i want to have 2 partitions. one is called system. the other is private.
in the private partition i've got some folders i want to mount into system as system folders.
folders in private:
- www
- home
mount points in system:
- /var/www
- /home
is this possible? cause it seems that you can only specify a whole partition to use for a mount point and not a folder in a partition or am i wrong?
i run ubuntu server.

If /mnt & /media are for temporary mount points and removable drives, what is the usual convention for locating permanently mounted partitions for all users on the computer? e.g. I have a partition for photographs, I'll just call it "photos" would it be bad form to mount it as /photos or something like /my_hdd/photos ?In practice it probably won't matter, but I want to make sure it's easy for anyone else to perform admin tasks on the computer when I'm not available.

Every time i reboot my computer my hard drive mount points keep changing which means the mount points i've put in the fstab wont work any more.
I'm using the same settings as i had before i upgraded the OS to what it currently is.
Im using fedora 12
My disk 1 for example would be as follows:
before: /dev/sda3
after: /dev/sdd3

trying to update a 11.1 installation. As I start the installation I get a message "openSuse 11.0 partition /dev/sda5 Change the mount-by to any other method for all partitions." Also the message said go back and reboot and make the change. What is this all about, how do I do this.

I have the following line in my fstab:

When I plug in the drive with this UUID, I get the following error:

I have googled this error and it seems that many other people are having this same problem, but I can't find a real solution. Most people suggest just reformatting the drive.

when i try to change permission for any file under mounted ntfs partitions (without any errors) it remains the same after changing.

After the fresh installation of openSUSE 11.4 x64 (Gnome 2.32.1) my NTFS drives were mounted automatically. However, I can only write those partitions as root. I' ve already tried everything I found on the internet, but none of those solutions worked and as a rookie, I haven't got any idea how to proceed. My original FSTAB looked like this:

I Just Recently Installed OpenSUSE with GNOME Desktop and was surprised to know that none of my NTFS Partiitions were mounted to the Linux File System. Earlier I had Installed Open SUSE with KDE Desktop and there were no problems, everything was readily mounted and i could access the NTFS Partitions. I am a Total Newbie To Linux. Give Me The Syntax To Mount The NTFS Partitions in Following Partition Table Acquired with fdisk :
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.
Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW
Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.
info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.
At the end of installion,lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.
Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.
But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.
After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr,lenny boot from lenny's grub.
The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.

Accidentally I changed the ownership of all the directories under / to my own instead of root:root. Now I am unable to use sudo and many bad things are happening. Is there a way to revert the changes or change the permissions again to root:root or make sudo work ?

I was copying a file to my pendrive it was taking a very log time which was ridiculous so I cancelled it but when I reboot my sysem next time my root drive became almost full (20gb partition, 12gb was free before. now its only 3 gb is free) also my pendrive is dead in linux in window it says you have to format the pendrive before use it when I click on format, format stops and says you don't have permission. also Now I cannot write anything on my winodws c or d drive because of permission.

I understand at least some of the advantages of this multi-user set-up, but why would you have to become root to stick a DVD in the machine? I suppose I could go into root and chmod the mount command, but - why would it have been set up that way at all? Is it paranoia?

so i have a main drive (320gb) which currently has kubuntu 9.04 installed.i also have a side drive (60gb) on which i made a backup of all my windows files (i wanted to migrate to new windows OS but messed up, long stupid story...) and also had opensuse 11.0 installed.now when i open either 2 linux versions, the ntfs partition isnt recognised anymore.there are files on it that i need, including the iso of the windows version i want to install next to opensuse (just like my old windows version)

Just installed 11.3 and upgraded kde to 4.5. Install is on Toshiba notebook with Win7 and Mepis 8.5.
Ntfs and all other partitions show in fstab and partition manager but not in Dolphin or Konqueror.
How to see and mount other partitions?

how do i mount extra harddrives...?
- After a hardrive crash which took out my opensuse 11.2, I installed three new harddrives instead of the old ones. I have installed xp. To see of I could triple boot, i thereafter put in linux mint. I did not like that and installed opensuse 11.3 - to ensure it would place itself on the two second harddrives (formatted in ntfs and with some data on) i before installation took those cables off.. And now alas.. there are no mount points.
So I tried yast, and found the partitioner, chose edit tried to put mount points .. however.. nothing seemed to have happened...

I'll start a fresh installation of a debian stable server and I would like to use LVM on this. So, I started to read lots of documents about LVM and found different flavors on partitioning with it. I'm thinking in a partition schema which might use LVM for those mount points that tends to grow in time, for instance:
/boot (primary partition)
/ (primary partition)
/home (lvm)
/usr (lvm)
/var (lvm)
swap (lvm)
Am I right on this schema?

I used QParted to size one my hard drive's NTFS partition to make unallocated space available to install SUSE. QParted created the the unalloacted space fine and I got SUSE up and running.
However, the NTFS partition is messed up. The QParted GUI and the SUSE's Disk management GUI shows it as NTFS drive with 319 GB space. However, nothing seem to be able to read/write to it. QParted gives a warning "Unable to read contents of this file system! Because of this some operations maybe unavailable." Is there any way to fix this NTFS partition so I can recover data from it?

I have just installed Open Suse 11.4 Gnome, and I am trying to work on files on my windows partition that is ntfs, and it keeps telling me that they are "read only"......I check my /etc/fstab file and that it shows permissions at the end of the windows partions to be "0 0", which I was told was what was I needed to be able to work on ntfs files in windows?
