unreachable computer's ifconfig reports xxx.xxx.xxx.37 but when I ping that address from another computer it says "Destination Host Unreachable" (all the other computers on the LAN can ping each other except this one particular computer)I can ping other computers from the unreachable computer just fine...
View 9 RepliesI installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.

I was able to establish the network and i have connection to the internet. The suse-machine is rechable by ping from all the other computers in the network. If I'm tryiing to ping the other computers from the suse-machine, nothing happens. The router responds without packet loss, but every other ping occurs in:
From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=5 Destination Host Unreachable
I've been searching for some ideas to solve this problem but couldn't find any.
Originally after an installation of openSUSE 11.4, I had no internet connection at all, even when connecting with ethernet cable. But then I tried switching back to YaST and then back to Network Manager, and restarted a couple times, and now I have internet connection. DNS is also working, for Ping. The problem is that firefox does not use DNS and cannot resolve host names. I can use Firefox with IP numbers.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI went into Yast and disabled the SYSLOG service, ignoring the warning of which services would be affected, I went ahead anyway and stopped it. Sure enough, a handful of other services stopped as well.Now I have almost recovered the PC from this foolish mistake of mine, the only problem I seem to be stuck with is I am now unable to locate the computer on my LAN by hostname ... does anyone know which service I should restart please (if it helps, the computer can resolve DNS names such as Google.com OK)?
View 3 Replies View RelatedInstalled Ubuntu 10.04 on my Sony UX280p with Intel 4965 wireless. Ubuntu detects the card without issues (as far as I can tell). I can see all access points in my area and select my access point and pair with it. I get a DHCP address from the AP (if ifconfig is to be believed) and iwconfig shows the ESSID of my AP but I can't ping the AP or any other computer on the network, nor can I ping the sony from any other computer on my network. Last year I had installed 9.04 on this computer and wifi worked out of the box without any issues.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe NetworkManager applet on my desktop states that my router is 192.168.2.1 and that my first DNS server is 192.168.2.1, but I cannot ping any hosts on my network using by name. All my other computers are windows so the naming is netbios naming, but I don't know if that makes any difference to DNS. I take it that because the other computers are windows that I need a wins client or something on my Fedora laptop. I would rather not fill out my hosts file because the IP addresses of the windows boxes may change.

I have installed Micro Core onto a usb of mine and am running it on my laptop. I have been able to successfully obtain a connection and valid ip with my router. As you can see below my wireless connection seems valid computer-end and on my router's page it comes under the list of attached devices.Although this is all fine and dandy, I'm am unable to ping my router or any other computer on my network, I am also unable to ping my laptop from other computers on the network. Also by the looks of it I have having no trouble transmitting, but I am not receiving any packets.

I just installed open Suse 11.3, and I cannot SSH my school. Upon further investigation I could not even ping any machines outside my local area network. Ironically I could nmap machines outside my local area network.

I all, I 've two computer with Ubuntu 9.10 (desktop version)connected by cross over cable.
I try to connect this computers in LAN with the following command:
ifconfig eth0 [address] netmask [netmask] up
When I ping from first computer to second the output is "Network is unreachable"
I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.
how can I allow a non-root user to do ping?

View 4 Replies View RelatedStep 1 : In Hyper-v Machine i have created two Virtual Ports.
Step 2 : Now for these two diff ports two ip address with different subnet mask(e.g 192.168.9.19 and 192.16.9.20)have been assigned(and have checked using ifconfig).
Step 3 : In Host machine i have added one subnetmask for one machine next one for another machine,however i m not able to ping both the ports from either of the machines having static ip 192.168.9.13 or having ip 192.16.9.107.
Step 4 : If i add same subnet mask for both machine it is pinging properly between 2 machines.

When I plug it into my DSL router at home (which works with other computers), I encounter the following behavior: ping can resolve host names, however, traceroute and Firefox and Thunderbird cannot.
It happens for both wired and wireless connections.
I have configured connection properly through mobile phone (SonyEricsson C510) by bluetooth. I get dynamic IP address and can ping everything but can't ping my IP adress which was automaticaly granted, from outside. SuseFirewall is stopped.

But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.
I have recently installed Fedora 12 on my pc but I am not able to browse the internet although the network icon shows the computer is connected.
I tried the dig command and got the following message:global options +cmd; connection timed out; servers could not be reached;
I am using FC9 and internet is working fine on it.
Well, I ping to google, it is resolving but if I ping by hostname to other LAN computers. it gives error : unknown host.
But if i ping with IP address it is pinging.
NOTE :
1) My firewall is acting as a dns server and other windows systems are resolving it.
2) FC9 firewall is disabled.
There is a computer in a home running opensuse into which I would like to login.
As usual, the computer is connected wirelessly to the home's router. I cannot control the router in order to direct incoming connections, say, on sshd port, to that computer.
Is there a way to log into that computer from outside?
The computer is fully under my control, as distinct from the home router. I know all relevant IP addresses. I can start any service on the computer, or start any command, or ask somebody to start a command while I am not at home.
