I haven't been active in Debian for two years back when Lenny was still in 'testing' and noticed that for some reason it is no longer protocol to restart network services using the 'init.d' scripts. I also noticed the same for Ubuntu (which I don't use or could care about) and am trying to understand what is the correct way now for Debian and what changed? I did a search on Google but didn't turn up any results. Is it no longer correct to run:

The NetworkManager applet on my desktop states that my router is 192.168.2.1 and that my first DNS server is 192.168.2.1, but I cannot ping any hosts on my network using by name. All my other computers are windows so the naming is netbios naming, but I don't know if that makes any difference to DNS. I take it that because the other computers are windows that I need a wins client or something on my Fedora laptop. I would rather not fill out my hosts file because the IP addresses of the windows boxes may change.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.

All of them got a nice green tick except the Virtual Network Device

I cant access that log file. Set the folder to read only, and any contents, but theres no file in there.
How do I solve this so I can run WMware?
I have ubuntu 10.4 running on both my desktop and laptop. Both machines are connected to the router in wireless mode with Wifi.I can access internet from both machines without any issues, however I cant ping one machine from another. (and vice versa)

I have installed Micro Core onto a usb of mine and am running it on my laptop. I have been able to successfully obtain a connection and valid ip with my router. As you can see below my wireless connection seems valid computer-end and on my router's page it comes under the list of attached devices.Although this is all fine and dandy, I'm am unable to ping my router or any other computer on my network, I am also unable to ping my laptop from other computers on the network. Also by the looks of it I have having no trouble transmitting, but I am not receiving any packets.

When I change something in network setings using yast (for example hostname) it failes to restart the network. I have to start knetworkmanager manually from the terminal. I am looking for a command line utility like ping that can use for checking appropriate services on a server . I do not want do any port scan . I just want to use it for checking apache , mail,ftp and other services on a server if they are running or down.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have installed apache and bind on my server and i've also registered a dynamic domain through dyndns as jan27.dyndns.biz. i am able to successfully host my own webpages using this method.
then i registered a domain name (lets call it "blah.com") through namescheap.com and have registered my nameserver to my ip address. after reconfiguring the my external zones in bind and restarted my services, i am unable to reach my webpages through the new domain name.. www.blah.com and blah.com would lead me to a opendns.com page but interestingly ns1.blah.com loads my webpages successfully.
Currently using oracle 9i with 3 database(maindb,arist,samp) in redhat 5.3 server .I want to stop 2 database "maindb" and "samp" manually ( in XP or Vista we can stop service oraclemaindb and oraclesamp ), but in redhat i dont know how to stop services and how to see currently running oracle services.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.
Xubuntu 9.10 on a DELL Inspiron 1150.I have a problem with intermittent dropping of my wireless connection ( see Belkin 7010 thread).Once dropped, the wireless will NOT reconnect (It just sits there saying "connecting" but never does) Same happens if I manually disconnect - I can never re-connect. On rebooting it will reconnect fine & all is well for sometimes 4 hrs.How can I kill all wireless services & restart them without having to reboot the laptop?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter a recent update of fedora 15 (2 days ago) I lost my networkmanager icon in top panel completely. Then I check network manager version & found it's version 0.8.0.9997-5.git20110702. After this update I can't connect to internet by any means either via wired or wireless connection. When I try to open Network option from system settings it giving me an error: System network services are not compatible with this version.
I also try to open network-connection-editor by pressing Alt+F2 & typing:
nm-connection-editor
But it not works as well, I can't see any existing network connection there, moreover I can't even manually add any type of network connection there including mobile broadband! Then I do some googling from my windows machine & found this thread- [URL]. According to this thread I try to do downgrading of following 3 packages-

networkmanager-gnome
But I can't downgrade via yumex as there's no internt connection in fedora. so i do a trick of myself. yumex suggests me to downgrade them to previous version 0.8.0.999-2.git20110509
so i manually download those 3 packages from my windows machine & copy them to /var/cache/yum/... folder. After that I do downgrading via yumex. But even after downgrading problem isn't solved. Same things happening still. No networkmanager icon in top panel & no internet
at present, there's no internet connection in my fedora 15 machine & I'm writing this post from my windows machine.
Moreover when I give this command in terminal:

i have Fedora 13 dual booting with Win XP and i cannot ping my router in Fedora. just reinstalled and i'm still unable to ping my router.everything looks like it was installed correctly except in the ifcfg-eth0 it has IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=yes dont think this should have a value of yes.

I am able to ping my hostname of sinbad only from the linux system itself. On all my windows boxes, I am not able to ping it. I can only ping the IP address.

Done a fresh install of Fedora 13 - it's the only os on the computer. Everything appeared to go well, but I'm unable to restart the computer. It gets to a point where it says restarting and just hangs there. Had a bit of a search through the forums and I see this was a problem for some people with earlier versions but haven't seen much mention past Fedora 10, and there doesn't seem to be a universal fix that's worked for everyone so not sure what I should be doing. There was some mention of the problem being related to nvidia drivers, but my video card is an ATI 4850 so that seems to rule that out as a possible cause. I've had several years using Linux (mostly Ubuntu and openSUSE) but hardly any experience with Fedora.

I have disabled the firewall and set http_proxy and can browse the internet with "Use system proxy settings" checked in Firefox. I am unable to update with yum either, but I am not sure if this is a side effect or not. I have run a trace on my ip address as I am browsing the internet and I can see the sites I am visiting on our web appliance. However, if I try to ping or update no requests are hitting the proxy so I don't think that is the issue.
