OpenSUSE Network :: Ping Works But DNS Not Working In Browser / Sort It?
May 30, 2011
Originally after an installation of openSUSE 11.4, I had no internet connection at all, even when connecting with ethernet cable. But then I tried switching back to YaST and then back to Network Manager, and restarted a couple times, and now I have internet connection. DNS is also working, for Ping. The problem is that firefox does not use DNS and cannot resolve host names. I can use Firefox with IP numbers.
I'm new to SuSe and lateley I was trying to establish a Network, when some weired problems occured. I was able to establish the network and i have connection to the internet. The suse-machine is rechable by ping from all the other computers in the network. If I'm tryiing to ping the other computers from the suse-machine, nothing happens. The router responds without packet loss, but every other ping occurs in:
From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.2.6: icmp_seq=5 Destination Host Unreachable
I've been searching for some ideas to solve this problem but couldn't find any.
unreachable computer's ifconfig reports xxx.xxx.xxx.37 but when I ping that address from another computer it says "Destination Host Unreachable" (all the other computers on the LAN can ping each other except this one particular computer)I can ping other computers from the unreachable computer just fine...
I tried to set up my internet connection using the network manager and not the classic iufp method. At first it just didn't work but after deactivating IPv6 I got it working: firefox can connect to the internet. What troubles me is the online update with Update Applet. The following message pops up: "Error: packageKit error repo-not-available: Failed to download /media fromAlso when I go to Yast->Software->Software repositories I get the msg:Systemadministration is blocked by PID 2459 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd). Close the application and try again.Using the command "sudo zypper refresh"eates the same message.I spent already hours trying to figure out the problem without luck
This applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.
I posted this already in the absolute beginner section, but no answer was found, so I thought I might try this place..Long story as short as possible:
- I installed Ubuntu 9.10 for a friend who was fed up with WinXP crashing all the time
- After the install, networks was broken. I could ping sites outside the LAN, could connect to the router via firefox, but NO application could access the web. - The router works just fine, I tried with my own notebook.
- Disabling ipv6 in grub (edit /etc/default/grub and 'sudo update-grub') seemed to solve the problem.
- Then update the standard packages + install restricted extras and boom, Network gone: No ping to sites outside the LAN, no nothing. Still can connect fine to the router and even the remote desktop connection works, connecting over the internet. But that's it.
I have tried setting the mpu to a value recommended by my isp, I have set static ip and dns, I really don't now what to try any more.
I have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).
I just installed open Suse 11.3, and I cannot SSH my school. Upon further investigation I could not even ping any machines outside my local area network. Ironically I could nmap machines outside my local area network.
I installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.
i am doing a project in which i have to use xen to create virtualised environment.I have already done this. now i am using the following setup
host os :- opensuse 11.1with ip 192.168.9.19 and with aliasing ip 192.16.9.14 guest os1:- opensuse 11.1 with ip 192.168.9.107 guest os2:- opensuse 11.1 with ip 192.16.9.13
It has been a while and many ubuntu updates since i connected the windows laptop, it used to work fine but this ubuntu machine keeps telling me the cable is unplugged. When i boot into windows XP the network works fine and the laptop can connect through the network to use the internet. I have a very simple home network ... 3 pc into one switch. I am by no stretch of the imagination good with networking
Step 1 : In Hyper-v Machine i have created two Virtual Ports.
Step 2 : Now for these two diff ports two ip address with different subnet mask(e.g 192.168.9.19 and 192.16.9.20)have been assigned(and have checked using ifconfig).
Step 3 : In Host machine i have added one subnetmask for one machine next one for another machine, however i m not able to ping both the ports from either of the machines having static ip 192.168.9.13 or having ip 192.16.9.107.
Step 4 : If i add same subnet mask for both machine it is pinging properly between 2 machines.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2 (Linux piura 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-03-16 21:25:39 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and have a network problem. At work, ethernet works fine. When I plug it into my DSL router at home (which works with other computers), I encounter the following behavior: ping can resolve host names, however, traceroute and Firefox and Thunderbird cannot. It happens for both wired and wireless connections.
I have a toshiba laptop with ubuntu 8.10 two partitions one with a crashed xp ubuntu and file storage. my net book is an acer eee with xp. i have the two connected with a crossover Ethernet. I can ping the ubuntu with xp but ubuntu doesn't ping xp. i have the fire wall off. xp ip is /24 192.168.0.100 default 192.168.0.1 ubuntu is /24 192.168.0.3 defualt 192.168.0.1
Gnash is not working in any browser. The only thing working is playing separate music tracks. Video with sound works only in Chrome, but full screen is not available and its very buggy. What to do? Don't want to use Adobe Flash, it's even more buggy, even with music files. Full screen also doesn't work good, although video plays in every browser.
I have configured connection properly through mobile phone (SonyEricsson C510) by bluetooth. I get dynamic IP address and can ping everything but can't ping my IP adress which was automaticaly granted, from outside. SuseFirewall is stopped.
It resides at 65.211.112.135 There are numerous domain names on this ip [URL]s Those are a few of them. Now if you try to ping 65.211.112.135 it does not respond, if you ping "www.barrierfree.us" it says pinging 65.211.112.135 but it also does not respond. BUT if you point your browser to one of the above domain names it will work, but it is quite slow.
I have just installed opensuse and the codecs to replace windows on my laptop. This is my third day using open suse and some of the websites i try to open (amazon.co.uk, gmail.com and others) redirect to a chinese website called www.net.cn) This is the same with the firefox and opera browsers.
I can not get NetworkManager to handle my Huawei E220 usb modem. I have searched forums and tried a lot of things. I have just upgraded from openSUSE 11.2 to openSUSE 11.3 using zypper. It seems to work fine except that umtsmon stopped to work, so for now my laptop has no connetion to internet at all. Here are some information about my settings:
I have used usb_modeswitch to make the device a modem. Am I right if I say that usb_modeswitch is a one time command, or does it swap the setting each time it is called? Anyhow lsusb states that the device is a modem. (All the time.) code...
here are the steps that i have taken already to resolve and troubleshoot the issue. i can ping Google. i can browse the Internet i can browser the repo Index of / through my browser. i have insured that ipv6 is disabled through network configuration through yast.
i am currently using monkey webserver on my linux machine for my website. I just recently found out that you can also stream music if you direct the web address to a folder inside the directory. The problem is when i try to click on a .avi all it wants to do is download the video instead of playing it in the browser or playing it in windows media player. What can I do to make an .avi to stream from my linux machine ( note this is for private use only so i can stream movies on my lunch break or when I am at a friends house this is not to share my stuff to the general public)
I have openSuSE 11.3 + KDE 4.4 running on a Thinkpad t400. Knetwork manager recognizes my wireless networks and the icon shows that my computer is connected. However, I am not able to connect to the web - browser, chat, twitter app - nothing works.
When I tried to log in this morning I couldn't until I enabled Java scripts in my Opera browser. This must be something "new and improved". Could someone confirm this? I would prefer "old and lousy" rather than open up my computer to the world at large.
When I start to download large files and try to use firefox the "Server Not Found" error appears. I'm seriously new to Linux so I don't want to be discouraged on being a fan of Ubuntu Linux.
My problem is the following:I can only connect to the internet and download through the FTP, but not through HTTP.I am in a hospital at this moment and have a netbook (Lemote Yeelong). Also there is a computer here with internet access.I would like to access the internet by using the cable from the computer.I configured my netbook just like the local computer (same host name, same MAC address, DHCP), just to be sure.I can ping google.com and I also can download from ftp.debian.org though ftp. However, when I try to connect to google.com through epiphany, it just loads and loads without success
