Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Ping Machines On Local Network

Jun 23, 2010

So in an effort to increase the speed of my netbook, I removed Ubuntu and installed Lubuntu on it. When I tried to mount my samba share as I normally do, I noticed it wasn't able to connect - mount error(113): No route to host. Sensing something fishy, I attempted to ping the machine (both by name and by IP) - Destination Host Unreachable. The machine I'm trying to connect to is using Ubuntu 10.04 x64. I attempted to ping the other way and it was able to connect to the netbook just fine. When the netbook was using Ubuntu, it was connecting fine. My iptables check out ok, but here is the output of iptables -nvL:

Code:

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 213 packets, 21635 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)

[code]....

Does lubuntu have some funky firewall built in to it that I can't find? (I've Googled for information on a Lubuntu default firewall and can't find any)

OpenSUSE Network :: Unable To Ping The Default Gateway When Using Custom Settings - Unreachable Network

Jul 17, 2011

I installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.

Fedora :: DNS On Router But Unable To Ping By Name On Network

Feb 1, 2010

The NetworkManager applet on my desktop states that my router is 192.168.2.1 and that my first DNS server is 192.168.2.1, but I cannot ping any hosts on my network using by name. All my other computers are windows so the naming is netbios naming, but I don't know if that makes any difference to DNS. I take it that because the other computers are windows that I need a wins client or something on my Fedora laptop. I would rather not fill out my hosts file because the IP addresses of the windows boxes may change.

Ubuntu Networking :: Router Can Ping - Connected Machines Can't

Feb 16, 2011

I'm running into a curious networking hiccup with my router setup. I have a D-Link DIR-628 wireless router connected to our modem, and a wire running from that to a Linksys WRT-54G (v1.1) in our basement. This setup worked great for a few days, but then suddenly the Linksys stopped routing us to the internet. I can connect to the router page on the Linksys and using the diagnostic tools I can ping the web from there, but none of the computers connected to it can. Everything is fine when connected to the D-Link.

After fiddling around with just about every setting on the Linksys I finally gave up and tried resetting it to factory defaults--and it worked! Everyone could access the internet again. But then, every day or two it locks up again and I have to reset factory defaults again.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Ping Over Wireless But Can Ping Over Wired?

Jul 24, 2010

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.

When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.

If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.

I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.

I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.

OpenSUSE Network :: Nmblookup Resolves But Cannot Ping Netbios Names Or Ping FQDN

Feb 23, 2011

This applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.

Slackware :: Use One Of Machines For All Kinds Of Audio Applications?

Jan 2, 2010

I'd like to use one of my machines for all kinds of audio applications, including home recording (MIDI and analog). Now I am looking for a suitable audio/recording interface. I've searched the web, but didn't find a lot of current information. Most of what I found is outdated.

RME Hammerfall seems to be brilliant, but exceeds my budget. MAudio 2496 seems to be excellent in quality, but a bit limited in connectivity. ESI Juli@ appears to be even better, but the parts exposed to the outside of the computer case don't seem to be overly robust..And that seem already to be all PCI devices supported by ALSA for my purpose! (MAudio Audiophile 192, e. g., is reported not to work that well).

Now I thought, I could avoid all this hassle by choosing a USB device. However, situation seems to be even worse. Terratec DMX 6Fire USB is not supported, at all, MAudio Fast Track Pro is limited to USB 1.1 and 48kHz (I want 96 kHz, at least!) only and requires a patch for 24 Bits. And so on...

OpenSUSE Network :: How To Setup With Firewalls On Two Machines

Jan 6, 2010

I have several Windoz machines in a peer-to-peer network and now two SUSE machines, one 11.1 and another 11.2.I have a network printer accessible now to all the machines. My next step is to be able to share files between all the machines and several network drives. I know how to set this up between the Windoz machines, but the only way I can get the SUSE machines to see the network (and be seen) is to shut down their firewalls, and I don't think that's how you are supposed to do it?Can someone point me to what it is that I need to read, or is there a FAQ somewhere to help get me started?

I think that this has something to do with Samba and I installed Samba (client or server? I forget) on the 11.1 and 11.2 seems to have it already built-in, but I don't know how to set it up with the firewalls on the two Linux machines so that it is all seamless (as if anything can be seamless).

OpenSUSE Network :: Set Up 3 Virtual Machines On A Server

Dec 10, 2010

I only have one IP adress to access the server. But the server will host 3 web sites and I want them to be hosted in a vm. So, I want to setup 3 virtual machines to do it and use apache reverse proxy and vhosts to redirect the domain requested to the right vm. Now. I understand the concept, but I am not an expert to set that up....

I have an openSUSE 11.3 server. So, I have to set a virtual machine server, is that right? I have been told that I cannot do it with VMware server in oS 11.3. Can I use virtualbox for this? I only have to install virtual box? Is there a special version to install? Once the virtual machine server is install, is it trivial to create 3 vm? So, I want to know wich are the steps I have to take to set that up.

Ubuntu :: Sharing Files Between Two Machines On Network?

Nov 4, 2010

I have a problem sharing files between two machines on my network, one, my main one running 10.10 and the other running Lubuntu. I've used the share files option on my main computer, and they show up on the Lubuntu machine, but when I try accessing the files, I get a message telling me that they'failed to mount'. It's frustrating in that I can see that the files are there, and obviously the Lubuntu machine can 'see' them too. I'm sure that I must have missed out something, and I've tried searching, but so far have only come accross some very old tutorials that just confuse me more. Surely there must be a fool proof way of getting this all working? (I've tried Giver, but the Lubuntu machine refuses to run Giver!)

Ubuntu Servers :: WSUS For Win Machines On My Network?

Nov 6, 2010

I've got a few parts laying around and maybe a 100 bucks on NewEgg I can get a Windows Server going. However, I have a few questions. I already have two Ubuntu servers going. My main concern is OS updates. I have Ubuntu based distros covered via apt-cacher-ng on one of my Ubuntu servers. I also have a nice squid server going with adzapper and so on. However, I have a bunch of Windows based machines on my network, and I have very limited bandwidth. I know I can run a virtual server on my main server, but I prefer to have an actual box just for a WSUS server for personal reasons. This is only an option if there is no option for WSUS style updating through Linux on my current server.

If I have to build a low powered Windows Server box in order to just push Windows updates for XP, Vista, and 7 to save bandwidth in the long run will a copy of Windows Home Server do the trick? I read an article from MaximumPC that WHS 2.0 will have a WSUS feature, but is this feature available in WHS 1.0? This is a really crappy way of storing updates and save bandwidth, but I don't know what other options I have. I live and work in a very remote area and I've already done everything I can think of to help save bandwidth. Like having a transparent proxy server and apt-cacher-ng running. It's also helps run things a lot faster when updating Ubuntu based boxes and surfing the internet. If I could just get the Windows updates out of the way I would be golden. I'll wait for WHS 2.0 if I have to. I'm not buying a full blown copy of Windows Server just for updates, especially on a box that'll cost about 300 bucks when complete. Still better than a prebuilt WHS box advertised on NewEgg for 600 bucks.

General :: Ruptime Not Showing All Machines In Network

Jun 3, 2010

I usually monitor machines in the network via ruptime. But one machine (lambda) acts very odd. It never shows up in the output of ruptime, unless ruptime is run from a particular client (delta). For example, say I am logged in lambda. This is what the output of ruptime and few other commands are:

[Code]...

Linux delta.grp.vpncc.org 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 20 09:35:07 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Only difference between delta and other machines is the fact that delta is the file server that hosts the nfs directories shared in all the machines. All the machines are in the same subnet. All of them run either RHEL4, RHEL5 or CentOS5. lambda runs RHEL 5.4, delta runs CentOS 5.2. I tried restrting rwhod daemon on lambda, but no change. why lambda is playing this hide and seek with ruptime?

Slackware :: Can't Ping Any Local Hostname

Feb 20, 2010

I've setup two slackware in a Dell Inspiron 640m e in Acer Aspire One D150.

In my router the domain is "home", the two slack use wicd (dhcpcd backend) to connect. I can go in internet.

The problem is that in my router panel I can see the hostname (so dhcpcd send the right one) but they can't ping other machine in the lan (windows 2000, nas or other linux box).

Now I can't use a fixed ip (i change several networks with different routers).

I think I miss something that can ask to my router the hostname.

Anyway I was able to ping Dell.local and Acer.local with Ubuntu karmic.
